The Istari (known as Wizards in Middle-earth) were an order of 5 Maiar spirits sent to Middle-earth by the Valar to aid the free-peoples of Middle-earth in defeating the legendary Dark Lord, Sauron. They were Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast, and Morinehtar & Rómestámo (Also known as Alatar and Pallando) .

Members of the Order[]

  • Saruman (White wizard, later of Many Colors after Sauron's corruption)
  • Gandalf (Gray, later a White wizard after slaying Durin's Bane)
  • Radagast (Brown wizard)
  • Morinehtar (Blue wizard)
  • Rómestámo (Blue wizard)

Saruman's Corruption[]

Fourth Age[]

After the Third Age, Sauron was finally defeated, and the Istari's work were apparently done. Gandalf returned to Valinor. Saruman attempted to come back, but was blown away by a great wind, never to return. Radagast stayed in Middle-earth to tend to the wilderness, at least until possibly TA 3018. The fate of Morinehtar & Rómestámo remains unknown.

Trivia[]

  • In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Saruman does not become a Wizard of Many Colors; rather, he remains a White Wizard after Sauron's corruption.
