Look, I just helped my dad leave this island. For good, like he's not ever coming back. And I know for a fact that all I've got is you guys, okay? You're it. And I've come too close to losing you, all of you.
~ JJ reveals his feelings as his friends for feeling sorry.

Jackson Jesse "JJ" Maybank, born Jackson Jesse Groff, is one of the three deuteragonists (alongside Pope and Kiara) of the Netflix TV Show Outer Banks.

He is considered the mascot of The Pogues and is the most picky, joking and playful member of the group and one of the best friends of John B, and then also the boyfriend of Kiara Carrera. Of all the Pudges he is the funniest and most optimistic, but also the most reckless and ignorant, due to the abuse of his father, Luke Maybank.

He is portrayed by Rudy Pankow.

Personality[]

JJ's main characteristic is that he never thinks before acting, for this main problem the Pogues often get into trouble, and he is very optimistic and carefree, he loves to party and knows how to enjoy life doing it in a lively way and has a great sense of humor, but he is also a troublemaker and an irresponsible brawler. John B calls him "the best surfer he knows", since surfing is his passion. He always knows how to have fun. He does not think before acting, he does not even think about what he says, ignoring the fact that those words could hurt others, and he does not know how to control his emotions and not even his anger, since he often gets angry for no reason and unsuccessfully resorts to violence and sometimes without even thinking to attempted murders with a gun and often argues with his friends if his ideas do not please others. He can also be very threatening, since he always makes his threats come true.

JJ is also the one the Pogues usually worry about when they get into trouble, because everyone knows he could get them into even bigger trouble with his dangerous actions.

These traits, however, are due to the fact that his father abuses and beats him since he was born, this creates great pain and insecurities in his soul, for this reason he hides his emotions and his pain with humor. Despite these negative traits, he can be very loyal and brave, always ready to defend his friends. In fact, he becomes more silent and reserved and does not try to fight him because he is afraid of him, until one day he at a certain point spoke up for himself and beat him for revenge, also showing his vengeful streak, already shown when he sank a kook's boat to avenge Pope, but he continues to love him anyway and would like him to do the same thing with him, demonstrating his true affection towards him. Also, he is not completely irresponsible: when Pope was at risk of being arrested for a crime that JJ had committed, he tells the truth and is taken in his place. He can never sit still, as he always feels full of energy and likes to move and talk. Although he often gets angry and argues, he actually doesn't like arguing and tries to resist, even if only a few times. He also becomes very protective of his friends with his violence, proving that sometimes it is necessary, as he always thinks of his family and friends before anything else.

John B calls him a slight kleptomaniac. JJ seems to enjoy the life of crime and has a slightly sadistic streak in committing some crimes such as stealing money from Barry's house and a gun from a safe. He can also be stubborn, as he doesn't often listen to others and likes to be reckless and unaware of everything, which would be to say fun for him. He can also be sarcastic, as he makes certain sarcastic jokes. JJ is not completely ignorant: when Deputy Plumb told him that one day he would end up in prison and John B told him that if he continued to do what he wanted he would become like his father, he obviously took it personally, but he listened to these words and was painfully affected by them, proving that deep down he is also sensitive.

History[]

Early Years[]

JJ was born in The Cut of Outer Banks, which many believe is that he makes shady deals around the OBX with bad people. Not much is known about JJ's childhood, except that his mother left shortly after he was born and he was left alone with his father who was really bad and mistreated and abused him both physically and psychologically, due to being an alcohol and drug addict. He also says that his mother left and never shows up because of him. So, since his early years JJ has had life and family problems and always struggles to find a job.

The fact that JJ is violent is due to his abusive father, but despite this he managed to make friends, like John B who met and became great friends when they were in third elementary, then they found a group called The Pogues, where they alongside Kiara Carrera and Pope Heyward go to fishing, swimming, drinking beer and especially go to adventurers, always in troubels.

Season 1[]

JJ helps John B look for the Royal Mercher with the gold his father was looking for. They find a lot of clues that lead them to find the gold in an old house. The group is also joined by Sarah Cameron, a former Kook, who becomes a member after JJ, John B and Pope leave her and Kiara on a broken boat in the middle of the river to make peace. When they manage to catch him, JJ tries to invest him in a pawn shop after melting him down a bit.

JJ is always running away from the Kooks, always getting into trouble, and when he finds out that Pope has been beaten by the Kooks, he decides to sink Topper's boat out of spite, even though Pope doesn't agree. When Pope is in danger of being arrested, JJ immediately defends him, revealing that he did it and is arrested in his place, although released. He steals money from Barry's house after his father mistreats him for the mess he has made, but when he shows it to his father, he refuses to use it to pay back and wants to keep it, so JJ eventually confronts him and gets the better of him.

The gold is stolen by Sarah's father, Ward Cameron, revealed to be a hypocritical murderer and former friend of Big John, John B's father, who wants to take it away with Sarah, but is then stopped by John B and Peterkin. Sarah is killed by Rafe who had been kicked out of the house by Rafe and wanted to assert himself. Ward falsifies John B's murder to get it off his back, but JJ helps him escape with Sarah and a stolen boat of his father. John B and Sarah end up in a storm off the island where they apparently die and JJ and the others are sad about it.

Season 2[]

Kiara along with Pope and JJ puts a symbol in honor of John B who they believe is dead, but then thanks to a photo of him and Sarah in Nassau they happily understand that he is still alive. Before leaving they try to prove John B's innocence to reveal that Rafe and Ward are behind Peterkin's murder. They succeed by recording Ward who pays the pilot of the plane so that he does not tell anyone who is the real murderer, even if they are discovered, but they manage to escape. At the end of the season the Pogues end up on a desert island with a new Pudge, Cleo Anderson.
