Jack Bartlett (ジャック·バートレットJakku Bātoretto), callsign Heartbrake One, is a deuteragonist of the video game Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. He is the former leader and flight instructor of the 108th Tactical Fighter Squadron from the Sand Island Detachment.
He is voiced by Steve Blum in English and the late Unsho Ishizuka in Japanese.
Personality[]
Bartlett, although a very talented pilot, has had a notorious history of being unable to comply with orders given, opting instead to follow his conscience. It is known that after the Belkan War he was never promoted again in part for his insubordination. Bartlett cares for all the trainees under his command (referring to them as "nuggets"), and he secretly admires Kei Nagase's skills when she defends herself after being attacked before the start of the war. He also seems to notice Blaze's skill, so he gave Blaze his old nickname "Kid". Thus, Blaze became his favorite pupil.
Though he would never show it, Bartlett would give his life for his wingmen.
Biography[]
Past[]
He was born in the Osean Federation in an unknown date of the year 1968 and joined the Osean Air Defense Force before the start of the infamous Belkan War.
The Belkan War[]
He fought during the Operation Battle-Axe alongside other talented pilots like the mercenary pilots from the squadron 66th AFU Galm. During the final engage in that same day he was shot down by a Belkan ace Ashley Bernitz alongside Wolfgang Buchner, a Belkan deserter.
He met Buchner after his successful landing after jumping from his plane. After that, the two started a journey to reach the Osean Federation's frontlines. Thanks in part to the destruction of Bartlett's attachment headquarters by the Magnetic Pulse Weaponry, he was able to convince his authorities that Wolfgang was his squadron leader and not a Belkan ace.
Before the Circum-Pacific War[]
He was stationed alongside Wolfgang Buchner, now using the pseudonym Peter N. Beagle, on Sand Island as trainer from the 108th TFS located there.
The Unsung War[]
He was alongside with the other pilots on Sand Island until he was shot down during an engagement with Yuktobanian aircraft and went missing. Later on, he was revealed to have survived and joined the Yuktobanian resistance to rescue Prime Minister Nikanor. His final mission was to help his former students destroy the SOLG Central Core to disable the satellite. After the mission was complete, he passed by Blaze in his aircraft, but what happened to him afterwards is unknown.
