Jacques Dernier, also known as Frenchie, is a supporting character in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger. Originally a member of the French Resistance, Dernier would become a member of the Howling Commandos after being freed from the HYDRA weapons facility by Captain America.
He was portrayed by Bruno Ricci.
Jacques Dernier was born on January 2nd, 1911 in France to unnamed parents, and was living in Marseille by the time the Second World War started. When Germany started to occupy Marseille, Dernier decided to join the French Resistance to fight off the Nazi Party. He would be captured by HYDRA, a secret organization that was affiliated with the Nazi Party, and was under the leadership of Johann Schmidt. Taken to a HYDRA weapons facility in Austria, Dernier would meet fellow prisoners Bucky Barnes, Timothy "Dum Dum" Dugan, Gabe Jones, and James Montgomery Falsworth. While being forced to create weapons for HYDRA at the facility, Dernier would help his allies create a chemical to kill HYDRA officer Lohmer.
Captain America: The First Avenger
While imprisoned at the facility in 1943, Dernier and his friend were freed from their cell by Captain America, who decided to rescue the POWs after learning Bucky was missing in action. Jacques assisted his allies in attacking the facility, and was seen wielding an advanced HYDRA weapon that was powered from the mind stone (also known as the Tesseract). After being brought to a American base in Italy, Dernier agreed to join the Howling Commandos, a special elite unit led by Captain America to stop HYDRA. His assistance would prove fruitful, as Captain America managed to stop HYDRA from attacking the west at the cost of Rogers sacrificing himself by going into the ice.
After the war was won, Dernier returned home and he later passed away, as Rogers learned of his passing after being thawed in the twenty-first century.
