Jaehwan (재환) known as The Butcher of Monarchs is the main protagonist of the 2017 fantasy light novel and 2022 manwha series, The World After the Fall and its 2025 anime adaptation television series of the same name.
He is the sole survivor of Tower of Nightmares when his goal is to conquer 100 levels as a Tower Walker after being summoned by the Tower of Nightmares like everyone else. Unlike those who were offered a second chance to turn back to time, Jaehwan refuses to turn back time realizing that the Tower is just a mere illusion seeking the truth of the system. He later discovers that the system that was governed are in fact controlled by higher beings and rejects entering the Chaos Universe and later chose to discover the truth behind it.
Appearance[]
His appearance is described to have muscular build with black hair and sharp features of eyes showing a cold distant aura. Others say he is often unreadable due to his calm and stoic focused expression rarely showing emotion. His attire is plain and simple for him to survive.
Personality[]
Jaehwan is a head strong individual who he himself does not obey the rules as he questions the authority to the world regarding his suspicion showing a cold attitude making him being stubborn especially how he talks towards others. This is led to the trauma and the isolation he had suffered due to his own earth was wiped out as he later decides to leave and explore outside the tower leaving his life as a Tower Walker behind. He often works alone and chose to leave others behind if they hold him back from the goals he wanted to pursue showing commitment and dedication.
He became resentful to those who wanted to return back time thinking they left the dedication to finish the tower itself having few little allies left.

His personal experiences before the tower[]
before the events of the The World After the Fall and being summoned to the tower, he served in the military as mandatory and later acquired the rank of a Sergeant in light novel and compared to Manwha, he achieve the rank of a corporal. While he served in the battalion, his teammates were killed by the solder who was abused due to his suffering from mistreatment but spared Jaehwan because he didn't participate but later committed suicide afterwards and was later put on trial but proven innocent after realizing he didn't participate the
His personal experiences in the tower[]
Throughout his life, he lost many people throughout the floors he and the group ascended and lost Han Seoyul in the process before ascending to the 99th and 100th floor. He is the only user who uses the technique called stab which he considers it very powerful and later met Beastain who revealed to him the information of the tower and later ascended after destroying the roof and went to the chaos to find the truth of the world behind It.
Abilities[]
Stab: the main attack of his technique that is outside the system and doesn't require mana making it indefinite.
- Slight Stab: a powerful version of stab mainly for attacking others
- Normal Stab: a powerful version when the opponent is strong enough
- Strong Stab: a version where Jaehwan can kill multiple people in one strike
- World Stab: can allow to injure with world power with his full strength
- Undead Stab: allowing to use it on eliminate the corruption on dead men by the King of Chaos
- Brain Link Stab: a stab where he can cut the link between chaos and depth
