~ Saul tells Robin she'll find companions. |
Jaguar D. Saul is a former Marine Vice-Admiral who had befriended Nico Robin and became her guardian twenty two years before the destruction of her homeland and was thought to have died after being frozen by his former friend Kuzan. However, he secretly survived, albeit being burned by the flames and requiring his body being heavily bandaged. He is currently in hiding on Elbaf to avoid the World Government. He became a history professor of Elbaf's library.
Past[]
Saul was born in the South Blue. As mentioned by himself, everyone in his family carried the initial D., while having no idea what it meant. At some point, he joined the Marines and was good friends with fellow marine Kuzan. He soon ascended the ranks and became a Marine Vice Admiral.
Twenty years ago, the Marines discovered the Roger Pirates had made contact with the Golden Lion Pirates. Saul was seen at Marineford walking with Monkey D. Garp, Tsuru, Sakazuki, and Kuzan listening to Garp voice his refusal to be an Admiral and pursue Roger.
Tragedy of Ohara[]
Nightmare of the Buster Call[]
Having helped Olvia escape, Saul quickly made his escape from marine headquarters only to be caught in a heavy storm.
As if by fate, Saul washed up on Ohara and was found by a crying girl. The two became friends and Robin continued to visit him for the following four days, while he built his raft. After Saul found out he was on Ohara and figured out that Robin was Olvia's daughter, he informed Robin about the battleships that were on their way to Ohara to destroy due to the scholars studying the Poneglyph.
Seeing that the battleships had already arrived, Saul rushed off to find Robin. As the attack on Ohara began, it was discovered that Robin also had the capacity to read Poneglyphs. As the bombardment began, Spandine and CP9 made their exit, Robin and Olvia reunited, and shortly afterwards, Saul arrived.
It was then revealed that Saul was a former vice admiral, and aided Nico Olvia with her escape. Olvia asked Saul to make sure that her daughter was taken safely off the island, and told Robin that she must continue to live. Robin begged to stay with her mother, but Olvia insisted on staying, as there was something more that she had to do.
Saul followed Olvia's wish and took Robin away before they managed to reach the island's shore. But the Marine ships spotted him and opened fire. Seeing as he was carrying Robin, Saul put her down and retaliated in anger for almost hurting Robin, and destroyed several ships. Saul noticed Spandine and charged towards his ship for his foolishness, but Vice Admiral Kuzan (later known as Admiral Aokiji) prevented him from getting that far, challenging him.
Saul tried to plead to him to understand why he defected after seeing corruption, before the conversation can go on the evacuation ship was destroyed by another vice admiral, Sakazuki, who did it as a precaution if any archaeologist had snuck aboard. This act disgusted both Saul and even Kuzan. Saul tried to get away with Robin but he was frozen by Kuzan's ice power. Before being completely encased, Saul encouraged Robin to escape and that her friends were out in the ocean waiting for her. His last act was to laugh as he is frozen, sticking to his philosophy to laugh from his heart even in bad times, as most of the bearers of D. did when they met their demise. To honor their former friendship, Kuzan aided Robin in escaping the island but she became wanted by the Marines for knowing how to read poneglyphs.
Fugitive[]
However, it turns out the flames burning the island melted the ice and he fell into the ocean. By the time he awoke to find himself freed, he was nearly drowning and left severely burned as a result, but he managed to survive. After the marines left, Saul was able to escape the island and hid on Elbaf, to recover from his injuries and was heavily bandaged. While there, he befriended Hajrudin and several giants to help him with a mission. The group accompanied him to the ruins of Ohara, where they gathered the books left in the lake by the scholars. It was here he met fellow D. bearer Monkey D. Dragon (son of Saul's former comrade Garp) who came to the island to honor his friend Clover and questioned Saul on his motives for the books, Saul told him that he refused to let Ohara's history die, and Dragon remarked to a visiting Vegapunk that he thought of Saul being odd but respected his desire.
Months after the Buster Call, Saul had discovered Robin's survival from the newspaper and was disgusted by the marines' smear campaign of her. Saul held out hope that he and Robin would reunite, coming up with scenarios for the impending meeting. Much later, Vegapunk secretly visited Elbaph and asked Saul to let him read the books and it was permitted.
Egghead Arc[]
During a talk with Shaka, one of Vegapunk's clones, the latter revealed to the Straw Hat Pirates how he encountered Giants on Ohara and his talk with the Giant's captain. Robin became overcome with emotion and asked if the Giant's leader name was Saul, though Shaka doesn't confirm it only that the latter is hiding. Robin cried in joy; at learning Saul was still alive after twenty years.
Much later, Saul (now fully recovered) is seen laying down and laughing in the wilderness, while Vegapunk revealed the truth behind the World Government's corruption to the public.
Elbaph Arc[]
Saul received word that Robin would be coming to the island, with him deciding to reenact their first meeting by collapsing all of sudden. This garnered worry from the witnessing giants, who called for help.
Once the Straw Hat Pirates arrived, they arrived at Saul's residence and were left worried by him supposedly being hurt. However, Robin was not concerned and approached him, as he suddenly rises with a roar but she isn't fazed, having expected it. Saul saw his ruse failed and remarked that he didn't know how to speak to her after so long. He picked her up and remarked that she is no longer a child, now a reflection of her mother, something that leaves her touched before he mentions Vegapunk's message and praised the scientist for his stance to tell the truth. Robin took note of his scars and Saul remarked on his toughness, as he revealed the details of his survival and brought up his joy at learning of her escape and his fury of Robin being lied on by the Government. Robin silenced his speech and stated her desire to focus on their reunion and Saul immediately complies by hugging her. Saul thanked Robin for making it to him after so long. Soon the pair broke down in tears while they voiced joy at seeing each other again. Watching the display, a majority of the Straw Hats (save Luffy, Zoro, and Jinbe) cried at the happy sight.
Appearance[]
As a giant, he is many times larger than a human. He has long orange hair and beard, that fused into the form of a mane.
He originally wore the standard marine coat but after his defection, he switched to a black shirt and pants that were tattered. He also took to wearing a cowboy hat.
After the Buster Call, he required his entire body to be bandaged to heal from his burns. He lost his leg and required the use of a peg leg and has gained scars all over his face and his right side of body.
When seen in the present day, he has grown a thicker mustache and takes to wearing an outfit, similar to the one he wore twenty years ago.
Personality[]
Saul is very selfless individual, as he liberated Nico Olvia after realizing the corruption of the World Government. He also honored her request to save her daughter Robin.
Saul initially saw the Giants of Elbaph as barbaric and was disgusted by their traditions of fighting to the death. However, this view did not stop him from hiding on their land or assembling a crew there. He also trusted them to preserve the history of Ohara. It was also worth noting, he made a life for himself in Elbaph and gained their respect.
Similar to most bearers of D., he showed no fear of death as when he believed he was going to die, he simply smiled and laughed whilst being frozen.
Abilities And Powers[]
Being a Giant, Saul held tremendous strength and was able to destroy several marine battleships. He was seen lifting a buster call battleship which is several times larger than a giant. However, he expressed fear of the thought of facing former colleague Kuzan.
As a former marine Vice Admiral, he had experience his share of battle, mentioning coming across several devil fruit users along the way. He also had authority of low-level marines but upon defecting, he lost those privileges.
Saul had impressive endurance, as he survived being shipwrecked, withstood being frozen, and being burned by the marine cannon fires.
