The Whisperers were my... family... from a young age. In that time, I witnessed a lot of death and suffering. Eventually, I became the cause of it. Weakness was considered a poison. And I believed in that. Fiercely. So much so, that when one boy expressed sympathy for our enemy before an attack... I slit his throat. I didn't talk to him. I didn't consider who he was. What he felt. Honestly, I don't even remember his name. All I knew was someone like him would only slow us down. (...) After he died, I kept hearing his words in my head: "Those people are like us, just on a different path." I stopped killing after that. I changed. But no one else did.
~ James to Clementine about his past.

James is a major character in The Walking Dead: The Final Season by Telltale Games. He is a teenage survivor who was a member of the Whisperers before defecting to them and surviving on his own. He has an extremely pacifist view of the apocalypse and is reluctant to kill humans and Walkers.

He is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, who also voiced Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach, Jonathan Joestar in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and Lelouch vi Britannia in Code Geass.

History[]

Past[]

In the past, James had a boyfriend named Charlie and the two joined the Whisperers during the apocalypse. However the ruthless climate of the group displeased James who left the group trying in vain to bring Charlie to follow him. Since then, James has become a pacifist, solitary survivor who continues to use Whisperer techniques like wearing a Walker mask to sneak through herds.

The Final Season[]

James first appears in "Suffer the Children" when Clementine kills some Walkers who were in James' horde. He stops her in the action before helping her treat Alvin Jr. who has been shot by Lilly and Abel. Afterwards, they sit at James's camp and get to know him before going to sleep. The next day, James walks Clementine and AJ back to boarding school and Willy nearly shoots James with his bow. When Clem offers him to come with them in the school James politely refuses before leaving.

We see him again in the next episode and he was attacked by the raiders. He asks Clementine and AJ for help in retrieving his mask from his camp and asks them not to kill the Walkers during the diversion. Then when Clementine asks him for help saving his friends, James is shocked that he has to use the undead for the plan. Reluctantly, he takes her and AJ to a barn full of Walkers and asks Clementine to walk among them putting on his mask. He thinks she'll change her mind about them after this and Clementine can either agree with him or continue to think of the Walkers as "monsters". Regardless of her answer, James releases the Walkers and informs Clementine that the herd will be ready tomorrow night.

Later in the episode, James is introduced by Clementine to the kids from the boarding school, which makes him uncomfortable. Surprised Willy asks to try on his mask and apologizes for trying to shoot him. Then Violet apologizes for Willy or Louis jokes about his mask, making James laugh. Afterwards, James talks one-on-one with Clem and says he's glad to see the group is tolerant of him. He also recounts how he killed a Whisperer who had doubts before an attack. He adds that he fears for AJ's upbringing and Clem can either defend what she's doing or assure James that he won't be a killer. After that, James puts his mask back on and sneaks into the herd while the other kids enter the Delta's ship. A little later, we see that James has been captured with Tenn and they are taken to the deck by Lilly. A confrontation then erupts with Clementine fighting Lilly and AJ grabs the gun and points it at Lilly. James begs AJ not to kill her and Clem can either tell him to or put the gun down. In the second case, James recovers the weapon but he is violently stabbed in the back by Lilly. He is later seen in the cave and is revived as a Walker. If AJ kills Lilly, James survives and joins Clem, AJ, and Tenn in a cave to flee from the Walkers.

That's when an enraged James tries to kidnap AJ and threatens Clementine to hurt her if she follows them. A violent confrontation erupts with James grows outraged, berating Clem for turning AJ into a monster. He explains that he could live peacefully and Clementine can tell James that his view of things is dangerous or that he cannot impose it on others. In the first case, James angrily leaves and abandons the others in the cave and he is never seen again. In the second, he calms down and tells the others to leave while he protects them by fighting off the Walkers.

Although he is not seen again afterwards if he survives, he continues to live alone but no longer gets along with Clementine.

Personality[]

In the past, James survived among the Whisperers and was like them, ruthless and murderous. However, he completely changed after killing a member of his group who had sympathized with enemies before a fight. Since then, James has taken a pacifist view during the apocalypse and decided never to kill humans or even Walkers again. His relationship with Clementine is often strained because of this, as they both have different views on how they should survive and deal with Walkers. James also saw the undeads as his friends and wished that Alvin Jr. could live without violence. In order to achieve this, he threatened to harm Clementine if she prevented him from doing so. It shows how delusional James was and that his pacifist outlook had led him down the wrong path. However, he can be calmed down by Clem if she tells him he shouldn't impose this "philosophy" on others.
