“ | There's something off about you, Morgan. I should have seen it before. The fake smile, the donuts. You don't even walk like a normal person, you glide. Like a... fucking lizard on ice. It's all a fucking act. And I ain't buying it. | „ |
~ Doakes to Dexter, showing he can see through Dexter's mask. |
Sergeant James Doakes or simply just Doakes, is a major antagonist in the drama psychological series Dexter, based on the novels of the same name, serving as the secondary antagonist of Seasons 1 & 2.
He was portrayed by Erik King.
History[]
Doakes was a stern and strict Sergeant within Miami Metro Homicide, acting as both a detective and a supervisor at any given crime scene. He was often partnered with Sergeant Angel Batista (who later became the presiding Sergeant in Season Three) and Officer Debra Morgan, while also dealing with forensics on scene, namely Dexter Morgan and Vince Masuka. His direct supervisor (and one of his closest friends) was Lieutenant Maria LaGuerta, whom he had previously been partners with for over two years. He was also one of the few characters that could effectively see behind Dexter's mask, which eventually led to him proving that Dexter is The Bay Harbor Butcher (though Dexter was able to pin the blame on Doakes instead, and the legend died with him until LaGuerta reopened the investigation after she discovered a dropped Blood Slide at Travis Marshall's crime scene).
James Doakes is a detective sergeant with the Miami-Metro Police Department's Homicide Division. He is also Dexter Morgan's arch-nemesis, the only person who can see the darkness beneath Dexter's charming, friendly exterior. He intensely dislikes Dexter, calling him "freak" and "psycho" at every opportunity.
Doakes harbors a great deal of anger and darkness of his own, however, and often comes very close to breaking the law when dealing with suspects; Dexter suspects that Doakes can see his "Dark Passenger", what Dexter calls his homicidal urges, because he has one of his own. He is not without human qualities, however. He is protective of his mother and sisters, and as close as he can manage to friendly with his superior officer (and former lover) Maria LaGuerta and Dexter's sister, Debra, comforting them both when their colleague and friend Angel Batista is shot.
In the TV series, Doakes eventually discovers that Dexter is a serial killer, but is killed by Dexter's former lover Lila West before he can tell anyone. In the book series, however, Doakes never discovers Dexter's secret, and is mutilated, losing his hands, feet, and tongue by a serial killer called Dr. Danco.* Personnality
James Doakes was very suspicious of the people who work with him and specially dexter ; initially his was brutal with all except Lagerta y Debra but was later proves to be empathic in his interior . Doakes also has a strong sense of justice but he goes too far in following the laws to the point of becoming obsessed and following his own rules which has led him to be challenged by his superiors and to become a scapegoat. His love for Maria is very present and tries to reason with her when Debra has useful information.
