| “ | There's something off about you, Morgan. I should have seen it before. The fake smile, the donuts. You don't even walk like a normal person, you glide. Like a… fucking lizard on ice. It's all a fucking act. And I ain't buying it. | „ |

Dexter: I really hate that name. Doakes: Jesus Christ man… Dexter: You said that. Doakes: Always knew there was something with you. But this shit? Dexter: What can I say? You were right about me. I never held it against you. I don’t now. Doakes: My buddies thought I was crazy for becoming a cop. I had skills, I could have written my own ticket. And lately, I thought they mighta been right. Sergeant James Doakes, falsely known as The Bay Harbor Butcher, is a major antagonist in the Dexter television franchise.
A decorated Army Special Forces veteran and member of the Miami-Metro Police Department, Doakes is the arch-rival of his colleague Dexter Morgan, who is secretly a vigilante serial killer later dubbed "The Bay Harbor Butcher."
Doakes' uncanny intuition makes him the first person to suspect Dexter's true nature. He is known for abrasively calling out Dexter's "creep" personality at work and starts a cat-and-mouse game with him before his eventual demise.
Doakes is subsequently framed as the Butcher, through which he continues to influence the plot significantly, even after his death. This is especially the case when Maria LaGuerta, and later Angel Batista, attempt to avenge Doakes’ death by exposing Dexter Morgan and bringing him to justice.
He was portrayed by Erik King.
Personality[]
| “ | The only real question I have is why, in a building full of cops – all supposedly with a keen insight into the human soul – is Doakes the only one who gets the creeps from me? | „ |
| ~ Dexter on Doakes' perception of him. |
Sgt. James Doakes is an anger-fueled, forthright, serious-minded, yet volatile cop cursed with an intuitive knack for sniffing out deception in other people, most particularly in the case of his sworn arch-rival Dexter Morgan. He is the epitome of a hardboiled, straight-shooting officer with no tolerance for nonsense, thus making him both a great detective and a constant headache for Dexter as he scrambles to keep his double life under wraps during the first two seasons of Dexter.
From the get-go, Doakes (correctly) suspects that the "lab geek" Dexter is covertly a dangerous man with something mortally wrong with him under the surface, and even though he can't pin down exactly why, he chalks up this hunch to his time in the military, where he fought brutal enemies face-to-face with darkness as pitch-black as Dexter's own, and even as Doakes' own. As Doakes says to a skeptical LaGuerta: "It's instinct, and a hell of a lot of experience."
At the station, Doakes is seen ceaselessly insulting Dexter and calls him a "freak," "creep motherfucker," and "psycho" at every chance he gets. Pretty much everything Dexter says or does gets under Doakes' skin. In private interactions with Dex, however, Doakes is less flagrantly hostile in his demeanor but acts more poking and sarcastic, usually needling Dexter about his after-hours activities and how little they make sense.
Even so, Doakes' rash behavior and hair-trigger temper are less than preferred by his more by-the-book coworkers like Angel and LaGuerta, both of whom try to tone him down for his own sake and that of the department's already suboptimal politics. The way he operates as a cop is also rather dubious since he acts like a vigilante, uses brute force, and has been involved in a laundry list of shootings, as noted by LaGuerta and Dexter. While some of his suspicions are actually correct, the other officers view him as unstable and obsessive because of it, which unfortunately makes it all too easy to trust when he's framed as "The Bay Harbor Butcher." Despite all that, Doakes completely trusts and acts on his instincts without any doubt, even when his own friends think he's paranoid and crazy, or when it could destroy him. He is also honorable and has a genuine desire to nail criminals who hurt the innocent, but retains serious trauma and anger issues, and his PTSD from Special Operations was so bad that he left his wife because he was afraid he might snap and hurt or kill her, which goes a long way in explaining his eruptive streak.
Apart from one particular forensics analyst, Doakes is highly loyal and caring toward his coworkers. He adores his mother and sisters, and shows as much kindness as he can to his boss and ex-girlfriend Maria LaGuerta, as well as Dexter's sister Debra. He is seen comforting both women when Batista takes a bullet. Doakes even has Batista's back after Batista reports him for killing Jacques Bayard on the job, respecting him for being an honest cop rather than viewing him as a "rat" like the others. Doakes does his job thoroughly at all times, never takes a shortcut, and expects nothing less from everyone around him. Doakes is also brave and determined, since he regularly puts himself in danger to squeeze his suspects. Even when he's locked up in a cage by Dexter, Doakes demands that he either kill him or set him free in an attempt to push Dexter's hand one way or the other.
When Doakes finally catches Dexter red-handed, he's sickened by Dexter's true character and calls him a "sick fuck" for being the Bay Harbor Butcher. However, when Dex locks him up, Doakes is able to understand Dexter better as they converse. He realizes that Dexter has some basic moral integrity that actually drives him to murder other killers, not simply because less legal heat is given to their deaths. When Dexter thinks he might turn himself in, Doakes becomes somewhat sympathetic to him, possibly out of a little compassion or respect. He even calls him "Dexter" for the first time instead of hurling insults or barking just his surname "Morgan," although it's probably just because he wants to make it out of there alive. Doakes may appear a bit "holier-than-thou" for condemning Dexter's vigilante killings while having killed war criminal Jacques Bayard himself on duty and covering it up, but he does have self-awareness: he admits he understands why Dexter goes after killers, but is disturbed by his specific, grisly methods, including his creepy ritual of brutally carving up Jose Garza with a handsaw right in front of him, desperately begging Dexter to turn the convict in properly before warning him to "stay away," nauseated as blood pours into his cage.
In the end, Doakes is suddenly killed by Lila West, never exposing proof that he was right about Dexter. But while he was alive, he incessantly told everyone he was certain he was right, which both LaGuerta and Batista would remember while trying to avenge his death and catch the true Bay Harbor Butcher: Dexter Morgan. The same is true for Dexter himself, who never forgets Doakes and even envisions him as he wakes up from being shot by his son Harrison.

Trivia[]
- Doakes' character has inspired two prominent internet memes:
- His catchphrase "Surprise, motherfucker!" starting with "Born Free" in 2006 became a viral soundbite and one-liner, with the jokes usually involving editing the audio of the original Dexter scene or putting Doakes' line into other video clips.[1]
- 2025 saw people use images and videos of Doakes side-eying Dexter suspiciously as a way to joke about when you know something fishy is up, but can't prove it. This also includes a reaction image of Doakes looking at Carlos Guerrero in a similar way.[2]
- In the book series, Doakes' first name is Albert instead of James.
- Doakes was the only main antagonist Dexter called his "archenemy" (in "The Dark Defender").
- Among Dexter’s main archenemies (Arthur Mitchell, Doakes, Brian Moser and Oliver Saxon), Doakes is the only one who is not a serial killer.
- Doakes kept a photo of a young boy in baseball uniform on his desk in "Crocodile." It's unclear if this was young Doakes, his nephew, or a son, as no children were mentioned from his previous marriage.
