~ Jamie Hughes |
Jamie Hughes is the main protagonist of the 2023 slasher sci-fi comedy Totally Killer. She is a typical rebellious teenager whose mother is killed by a sadistic serial killer from 35 years ago, who picked off her mother's best friends back in the day. Jamie accidentally ends up back in 1987 and must team up with the 16-year-old version of her mom to unmask the killer and change the course history.
She was portrayed by Kiernan Shipka.
Appearance[]
Jamie Hughes is a modern-day teenager with a punk-rock aesthetic influenced by her mother’s stories of the 1980s. She has long brown hair, often worn loose or in a casual ponytail, and expressive hazel eyes. She dresses in comfortable, modern clothes — usually hoodies, T-shirts, and jeans — that sharply contrast with the 1980s fashion of the era she time-travels to. Her appearance throughout the film subtly changes to reflect her shift from a skeptical teen to a determined and battle-worn survivor.
Once she travels back to 1987, Jamie stands out due to her modern-day speech, attire, and demeanor, instantly distinguishing her from the other teens who are more influenced by ‘80s culture. As she adapts to the past, she tries to blend in more but still retains her distinct, no-nonsense presence.
Personality[]
Jamie Hughes is a sharp, witty, and strong-willed teenager. She embodies the classic "final girl" archetype but with a contemporary twist. Raised in a world full of true crime podcasts and horror tropes, Jamie is highly self-aware and skeptical, often breaking down genre conventions as they happen around her. This meta-awareness is a major part of her charm and makes her an engaging and relatable protagonist.
She’s fiercely independent and emotionally guarded, especially after losing her mother in the opening of the film. Despite this, Jamie has a compassionate side, particularly evident in her desire to save innocent lives—even if it means risking her own. She balances a sarcastic, rebellious streak with a deeply rooted moral compass and empathy for others.
Jamie is also highly intelligent, quick-thinking, and resourceful. Throughout her time-traveling journey, she learns to adapt quickly, manipulate social dynamics in the past, and face terrifying situations head-on, even when she’s scared. Her bravery is grounded not in a lack of fear, but in her willingness to act despite it.

Jamie has a strong, though sometimes strained, bond with her mother. At the beginning of the film, they argue due to Jamie’s rebellious nature and her mother’s overprotectiveness. However, after Laurel’s tragic death, Jamie is devastated and driven by grief to go back in time to save her.
