~ Jay's response to Mr. Gilbert rhetorically asking what was on his ear. |
Jay Cartwright is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Neil Sutherland) of the British comedy series The Inbetweeners. He attends sixth form at Rudge Park Comprehensive. He is the least socially-acceptable of his friendship group, being rude and abrasive, but he has deeper feelings than a first glance would suggest. By Series 3, he drives on a provisional licence, but Simon still takes leadership when it comes to travelling in the group as Jay's driving has been described by them as "dangerous". Jay often lies and makes large claims, only to rarely deliver on them.
He is portrayed by actor James Buckley and his role as Jay is what sparked his popularity due to the show being successful across the United Kingdom.
Personality[]

As mentioned earlier, Jay often lies, either about some form of sexual encounter or something to improve his social status and popularity, although this always backfires, with the only person believing him being Neil. The fact that he has never engaged in any form of sexual activity causes him to feel insecure and therefore relies heavily on pornography to inform him about sex, giving him a very false idea about both women and sex, making hims sometimes come across as both a sex pest and misogynistic. He is obsessed with the idea of sex, he constantly tries bizarre forms of masturbation. A lot of the time when lying, he will often end-up getting caught at in awkward moments, such as claiming he supposidly fingered a girl when he was twelve and that she proceeded to deficate over his arm.
Jay mocks his friends at every opportunity to make him feel better about himself despite the fact he is unlikely to make new friends. Jay has also been shown to be quite arrogant when he thinks he can get more girls than his friends as he poses himself as the most sexually-experienced person of the group when in reality, it is the complete opposite. He is extremely unpopular with women because of his abrasive and sexual nature which causes him to say the wrong things all the time damaging both him and his own friends' reputation.
Backstory[]
It is clear to see that most of Jay's downsides in his personality originate from his father mistreating him. In all scenes with them together, he will make-fun of him whether if his friends are with him or not. In the last episode of the series, it was revealed that Jay's mother was considering sending him to a mental health psychologist. In this same episode, it was also mentioned that Jay was sexually assaulted by his former neighbour in his shed. This happened on several occasions and it was referred to as a "game".
Heroic Traits[]
Despite his flaws, Jay is deep-down a nice person and he will sometimes show this at appropriate moments, such as him being nicer to Will McKenzie when he almost fell asleep in an ants' nest, which was the same mistake Jay had previously made. This scene stands-out because he is usually rude to Will the most out of everyone in the group.
Appearance and Fashion[]
Jay is average in build and height, with straight hair with blonde highlights. It may be this appearance which adds to his desire to be noticed. When at school, Jay can be caught wearing school shirts as opposed to blazers or jumpers with his tie being tied shortly, which may have been the writers foreshadowing the idea that his penis is small. Outside of school, Jay can most of the time be seen with jackets and football kits.
