Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility."

~ Jean Grey |
Jean Grey, better known as Marvel Girl, is one of the main protagonists of 1992-97 animated superhero series X-Men: The Animated Series and its 2024 sequel series X-Men '97, as well as a guest character in Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
She is a telepathic and telekinetic member of the X-Men and wife of Scott Summers. She was one of Charles Xavier's first students and thus often acts as a mentor to younger mutants on what it means to be a X-Man and all the responsibilities that come with being a hero.
She is voiced by Catherine Disher in the original series, and by Jennifer Hale in X-Men '97.
History[]
X-Men: The Animated Series[]
Jean Grey was Xavier's first mutant student. Her telepathic powers first manifested as a child, when she witnessed the death of her best friend Annie Richardson. Jean's parents were approached by Charles Xavier, who offered to help her. When she said to Xavier that her parents said that she thinks too much, he reassured her by telepathically saying that he does too. Jean was a warm hearted friendly person who when necessary stepped in and played peacemaker between Cyclops and Wolverine and the rest of the team.
She was in relationship with Cyclops. While on a date, they were both kidnapped by the Morlocks because their leader, Callisto, wanted Cyclops as her companion. Jean managed to telepathically contact Professor X, who sent the other X-Mento rescue them. Jean and Scott eventually got married. However their marriage was interrupted by Mr. Sinister and his Nasty Boys who wanted to kidnap them because their genes held the key to creating the perfect mutant. They were rescued by the other X-Men and Mr. Sinister was nearly destroyed by Cyclops.
Later, she assumed the power of the Phoenix Force. However, the power overwhelmed her in time and transformed her into the Dark Phoenix. She is however freed from the cosmic entity and returned to being a X-Man.
X-Men '97[]
The X-Men resolved to sacrifice themselves to stop the asteroid from crashing. Jean projected her and Scott into Cable's mind, so that they could say a final goodbye to their son. With Magneto awakening just in time, the X-Men managed to save the world from the crashing asteroid, before suddenly disappearing, scattered across time.
Six months after her disappearance she was listed as MISSING PRESUMED DEAD on Forge's roster.
Scott and Jean suddenly found themselves in the year 3960 A.D. There, they encountered Clan Askani, as well as a young version of Cable.
Powers & Abilities[]
Jean has the power of telekinesis giving her the ability to control a person or object by thought. She can also create forcefields and project concussive blasts. She also has telepathic abilities which have their limitations to powerful mutants such as Apocalypse.
When she gained the Phoenix Force, Jean's original powers were enhanced as well as having the power of flight, manipulating matter, pyrokinesis and space travel. She commonly manifested her new powers as a large fiery Phoenix.
Personality[]
Due to her powers of telepathy, Jean is able to sense and feel everyone's emotions around her, allowing her to be extremely empathetic towards everyone. She displays this when she tells Cyclops she is worried about Rogue, explaining to him she somewhat understands Rogue's fears of touching others, as when she and Cyclops kiss or touch, when he is suffering, Jean feels it as though it is her own suffering. Jean is an aura of love and sympathy and compassion, a generous, gentle soul of a woman who at times can be guilty of loving and caring too much. Jean is vibrant, intelligent, soft-spoken, loyal, courageous, caring and kind, shown to be a friend towards everyone and hates the idea of Wolverine, Cyclops or any of her other teammates getting hurt.
Her love for Cyclops and her unrequited love for Wolverine make her feelings for both men complicated, as she does not want to hurt either one of them. Possibly because she is a redhead, Jean is also very feisty and stubborn to a fault - though she sees her stubbornness as determination, these traits being shown when on the X-Men's mission in outer space, she is determined to fly the spacecraft back to earth despite the risks of the radiation affecting her, showing how far she is willing to go to sacrifice herself to save her friends.
When the Dark Phoenix takes over her and manipulates her, however, she expresses open feelings of anger, resentment, bitterness and jealousy, especially in concerns to Cyclops talking to Dazzler. Jean is very idealistic and a definition of a dreamer, as she deeply believes in what she does as an X-Man and believes that one day, humans and mutants will live in peace and everything will get better.
After escaping from Sinister's lab in which she was held for years, Jean was devastated that none of the X-Men had realised and heartbroken that Cyclops hadn't noticed that she had been replaced by Madelyn Pryor, although when she befriended her duplicate, she forgave them to a certain degree due to Jean and Madelyn being identical on a genetic and emotional level, thus a confusion was understandable. Although, her relationship with Cyclops was more distant than it had been, but they remained close friends.
