“ | Ready? For 800 years trained Jedi, I have. My own council will I keep on who is to be trained. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one, watched a long time I have. All his life has he looked away to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was, what he was doing. Adventure. Excitement. A Jedi craves not these things. | „ |
~ Yoda |
The Jedi, also known as the Jedi Order and the Holy Order of the Jedi Knights, are the main protagonists of the Star Wars franchise.
They are an ancient peacekeeping organization united by its belief and understanding of the Force, specifically the light side. They have a long history as warriors of the light side and the defenders of the innocent. Having a history of 25,000 years, they are older than the Galactic Republic itself, which they protect.
The Jedi follow the light side of the Force and value benevolence, wisdom, peace, balance, harmony, justice, self-control and protecting the innocent. They saw dedication to the ways of the Force and the protection of others as important, and as a result they were forbidden from forming romantic attachments and believed that the mind was more important than emotions. The rule of detachment was eventually removed by Luke Skywalker when he rebuilt the Jedi Order, which allowed Jedi to marry.
They are opposed by their ancient enemies, the Sith, who practice the dark side of the Force.
History[]
The Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, later the High Republic, then the Galactic Republic, and became among the most famous of the various groups that relied on the Force for their power. Led by the Jedi Councils, the Order grew over the millennia despite facing many trials.
They were opposed by their ancient enemies called the Sith, wielders of the dark side of the Force and the opposite of what the Jedi stood for in regards to philosophy and power. Despite their long-millennia of Servitude, the old Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic became the target of a millennium-spanning plan of vengeance plotted by the Sith to which Palpatine, both the Supreme Chancellor and secret Sith Lord, Darth Sidious nearly succeeded in destroying the Jedi and tearing down the Old Republic in order to transform it into a Sith-ruled Empire.
As a result of Emperor Palpatine's rise to power and the end of the Galactic Republic that the Sith Empire was restored, which it transformed into the First Galactic Empire, the Jedi Order was hunted down to extermination by the Emperor's new apprentice, Darth Vader (formerly Anakin Skywalker) and disgraced in the eyes of the Republic and the galaxy. But Darth Vader eventually redeems himself and kills the Emperor to save Luke, thus bringing balance to the Force. Later, after the Empire's fall and the rise of the New Republic, Luke Skywalker started to train a group of Force-users to form a New Jedi Order.
However there are many Jedi who survived Order 66 and they came out of hiding when the Empire fell; Grogu, an infant male Yoda's species and Jedi Youngling reemerge after being recused by a Mandalorian bounty hunter named Din Djarin who takes him in as his Mandalorian student. Ahsoka Tano and her padawan, Sabine Wren successfully found and delivered Ezra Bridger back via stoll away on Grand Admirial's Imperial I-class Star Destoryer Chimaera, but at a price because the two of them get felt behind.
However, Luke's apprendices were killed during a lightning storm that destroyed his Jedi Temple. To make matters worse, his nephew, Ben Solo, fell to the dark side after Luke was tempted to kill him in his sleep. Ben would later join a group of dark side warriors called the Knights of Ren, serve the First Order under the Supreme Leader Snoke, and become the dark side warrior known as "Kylo Ren".
Even though Luke Skywalker survived the destruction of his Temple, he went to self-exile after failing to stop Ben Solo from becoming Kylo Ren. For six years, the Resistance and the First Order went on a very competitive race to find the last Jedi until a scavenger named Rey found the map to the first Jedi Temple. She then successfully got Luke to teach her about her Force powers. After Luke Skywalker sacrificed his life to allow the rest of the Resistance and Rey to escape during the Battle of Crait, Rey took on the Jedi legacy and went to help the rebuilding of the Resistance.
A year later the galaxy heard a broadcast of the revived Emperor Palpatine's speech of revenants. After the Resistance learned about the Emperor's return, Rey and her friends went on a quest to find a Sith wayfinder to Exegol. After finding the wayfinder, Rey fought Kylo Ren on the remains of the second Death Star. Rey ended up saving Kylo's life by healing him from a mortal wound she inflicted on him before admitting that she wanted to join him as Ben Solo. Incited by his feelings of remorse and the love of his parents and Rey, Ben is brought back to the light.
During the Battle of Exegol, the Resistance took out the Sith Eternal forces with help of the citizens' fleet while Rey and Ben fought Palpatine. After Rey was killed after defeating the Sith Lord and his Sith loyalists, Ben Solo revives Rey by pouring all his own life energy into her, vanishing in the Force as a consequence. Sometime after celebrating the victory against Palpatine and the Sith Eternal, Rey and BB-8 went to the Skywalker homestead in Tatooine to bury the two Skywalker lightsabers, before she activated her own yellow-bladed lightsaber. She then proclaimed herself as "Rey Skywalker" as she introduced herself to an elderly woman while Leia's and Luke's Force spirits watched her from afar. Thus, Rey will continue the Skywalker and Jedi legacy.
Sometime later, Rey has earned the title of Jedi Master while helped by the galaxy to restore its long-awaited peace.
Legends timeline[]
Eleven years after the Battle of Yavin, during which time Luke aided the Rebel Alliance stamp out the remains of the Empire and establish the New Republic, Luke eventually felt it was safe enough for him to build a New Jedi Order. He founded it at Yavin 4 and based it in the temple which serves as the Rebel base during the Battle of Yavin, which became known as the Jedi Praxeum and was the former lair of the ancient Sith Exar Kun. The earliest students of the New Jedi Order included Kyle Katarn and Coran Horn, X2 and others. Soon after it would be joined by Kyp Duron, Jaden Korr, Lowbacca, and Mara Jade (who would go on to marry Luke). Luke's relatives would also join, including his son Ben Skywalker, his niece Jaina Solo, and his nephews Jacen and Anakin Solo.
Luke's New Jedi Order would face many wars and battles during its time. Imperial warlords aside, he also had to contend with various dark siders including Dark Jedi and Sith cults. The most famous of these dark side users were the Dark Lady Lumiya and Luke Skywalker's own nephew Jacen Solo, who took up the mantle of Darth Caedus, who murdered Mara Jade. They also contended with the ghost of Exar Kun, who manipulated Kyp Durron into turning to the dark side, but succeeded in defeating the Sith spirit and bringing Kyp back to the light. Among the gravest battles were against the Yuuzhan Vong, which saw the destruction of Yavin IV and the death of Anakin Solo, and the dark side entity Abeloth. Regardless of how many wars and conflicts that ensued, the New Jedi Order survived and continued to expand and improve upon the old Order.
It was not until 130 after the Battle of Yavin that the New Jedi Order faced extinction after the Imperial Remnant was taken over by the One Sith led by Darth Krayt, who once teamed up with Luke to defeat Abeloth. Krayt's Jedi Purge was less successful than Sidious' however, and after seven years Krayt's rule, the remaining Jedi resurfaced and aided the remnants of the Galactic Alliance and Fel Empire to defeat the One Sith. Darth Krayt himself was killed by Cade Skywalker, a descendant of Luke. The Sith going into hiding and peace restored to the galaxy, the Jedi resumed its former place as peacekeepers and joined the Galactic Alliance and the Fel Empire in forming the Galactic Triumvirate.
