Jefferson "Jeff" Pierce, also known as Black Lightning, is a major character in the Arrowverse, first appearing as the titular protagonist of the CW series Black Lightning. He has also appeared in the annual crossovers Crisis on Infinite Earths and Armageddon.
Jefferson is one of the most well-respected superheroes in the community of Freeland and a meta-human with lightning-based powers and abilities. He is the son of the late Alvin Pierce, the husband of Lynn Stewart, and the father of Jennifer and Anissa Pierce.

Jefferson was born on September 12, 1974 to Alvin Pierce, who gave his son a vaccine that would ultimately give Jefferson his powers. At a young age, Jeff witnessed his father's murder at the hands of Tobias Whale before he turned twelve. It left Jeff orphaned and alone. At twelve years old, Jefferson took part in a riot after the loss of his father. but he was chased by S.W.A.T. police officers and into an alley. There, he was found by Peter Gambi, a man who was acquainted with Jefferson's father and discovered Jeff's powers. Peter took in the young Jeff PIerce and noticed his foster son's powers manifesting before he turned fifteen years old. In order to deal with the recent loss of his father, Gambi helped Jeff distract himself from it by learning about history.
Jefferson eventually married a woman, Lynn Stewart, and had two children with her: Anissa and Jennifer. However, he kept his powers a secret, and only a selected few were aware of his identity, Lynn and Gambi. With the rise of the gang known as the 100, Jeff notice people were losing hope and he decided to use his powers to help people. Jefferson's vigilantism got in the way of his marriage with Lynn, leading him to give up his status as a vigilante. However, Lynn and Jeff ultimately divorced and he retired to being a vigilante to be there for his family.
