~ Jeffrey toasting Sandy

Jeffrey Beaumont is the main protagonist of David Lynch's 1986 film Blue Velvet. He is a naïve college student who tries to investigate a mystery, and ends up being pulled into an underworld of crime and sexual sadism.

He is portrayed by Kyle McLachlan, who also portrayed Dale Cooper and Paul Atreides in two other Lynch works - Twin Peaks and Dune, respectively.

In Blue Velvet[]

After his father, Tom, suffers a stroke, Jeffrey returns to his hometown of Lumberton, North Carolina from college to visit him in the hospital. After one such visit, Jeffrey walks through a field and discovers a severed human ear. He brings the ear to police detective John Williams, and meets Williams' daughter Sandy, who tells him that she suspects that the ear has something to do with a mysterious torch singer named Dorothy Vallens. Intrigued, Jeffrey infiltrates Dorothy's apartment by posing as an exterminator, and sees her talking to a man in a yellow coat whom he nicknames "The Yellow Man". He takes her key, and makes a copy of it so he can get in again.

Jeffrey goes to see Dorothy sing at a nightclub, and breaks into her apartment again. Dorothy catches him and forces him to strip naked at knife-point while performing oral sex upon him. They are interrupted by the arrival of Frank Booth, a psychopathic gangster and drug lord who has killed Dorothy's husband and kidnapped her son in order to extort sexual favors from her. Jeffrey watches from Dorothy's closet while Frank beats and rapes her while huffing amyl nitrate and alternating between fits of crying and violent rage. After Frank leaves, Jeffrey leaves and seeks comfort from Sandy, and begins to fall in love with her.

Jeffrey continues investigating the case while simultaneously seeing both Sandy and Dorothy; the latter introduces him to sadomasochism, and begs him to hit her while they have sex. Jeffrey later sees Frank at one of Dorothy's shows, selling drugs and associating with the "Yellow Man". He also discovers that ear belongs to Dorothy's husband, and deduces that Frank killed him to intimidate Dorothy into submission.

Frank catches Jeffrey at Dorothy's apartment and kidnaps him, taking him to see his associate "Suave Ben", who is holding Dorothy's son hostage. After making Jeffrey watch Ben lip-sync to Roy Orbison's "In Dreams", which moves Frank to tears, Frank and his cronies take Jeffrey and Dorothy to a sawmill, where Frank kisses Jeffrey and beats him to as pulp as a warning to stay away from Dorothy, The next morning, a bruised and bloody Jeffrey walks back to his Aunt Barbara's house, where he is staying while in town.

Jeffrey goes to see Detective Williams, and discovers that Williams' partner, Tom Gordon, is the Yellow Man - a corrupt cop who has been killing Frank's rival drug dealers and stealing drugs from the precinct's evidence room for Frank to sell, in return for a share of the profits.

Jeffrey takes Sandy to a school dance and after-party, only to find Sandy's ex-boyfriend Mike Shaw waiting for them at Sandy's house, threatening to beat Jeffrey up for stealing his girlfriend. They are interrupted by the sudden appearance of Dorothy, naked, bruised, and traumatized. Jeffrey tries to comfort her, but Sandy learns of his infidelity after Dorothy calls him "my secret lover", and slaps him. Ashamed, Jeffrey apologizes to Sandy and tells her to tell her father about Frank as Dorothy is taken to the hospital. As Detective Williams leads a team of police officers to arrest Frank's thugs, Jeffrey goes to Dorothy's apartment to confront Frank himself.

At the apartment, Jeffrey finds the dead bodies of the Yellow Man and Dorothy's husband. Frank arrives and looks frantically for Jeffrey, who is hiding in the closet. Jeffrey uses the Yellow Man's walkie talkie and gives a false location. When Frank open the closet door, Jeffrey shoots him in the head, killing him. Jeffrey then returns home to find that Sandy has forgiven him and that Dorothy has been reunited with her son.
