Jellal Fernandes is a major protagonist of the Fairy Tail franchise. He is a childhood friend and love interest of Erza Scarlet, and a former enemy turned major ally of Fairy Tail. Jellal is also the leader and co-founder of Crime Sorciere.
He is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Robert McCollum in the English version.
Personality[]
After being revived by Wendy Marvell, Jellal had amnesia and became afraid of the world. Although he does not remember his own identity, he remembers the names of Erza and Natsu Dragneel. Jellal wanted to die and thought he was still an experiment, but he had become a better person and wished to find a way to repair his horrible acts. Afterwards, Jellal became a much more calm and peaceful individual. Mavis Vermilion even noted that Jellal has the same "heart" as those of Fairy Tail.
Jellal's personality is calm, mature, intelligent, noble and kind. He is shown to have a compassionate side, as he enjoys seeing his friends' happiness, which in turn, makes him happy. As "Mystogan", he makes sure to stay calm and aloof, so nobody will be suspicious that Fairy Tail is harboring an escaped convict. While working for the Witch Crime guild, he dedicates himself to the elimination of Dark Guilds. Despite this, he states that the punishments are always earned as "The punishment" is the theme of their guild.
In spite of his rather serious nature, Jellal's self-control can still occasionally slip, such as when he was bursting with hysterical laughter during the Great Magic Games, but he was ashamed afterwards, saying he had no words to describe his feelings of shame and embarrassment.
He has a perverted side, finding excitement in being bound and blindfolded by Erza; she needed to get him out of the way after he got brainwashed. As his brainwashing didn't do anything but make him loyal to the castee, this is 100% something he normally keeps deep in his heart.
Biography[]
Jellal was a slave and was forced to build the Tower of Heaven. He was childhood friends with Erza, Millianna, Simon, Wally, and Shô. After failing the escape and the reclusion that followed it, he was possessed by what he believed was Zeref, the legendary Dark Mage (but in reality it was Ultear Milkovich Dark Magic. This manipulation changed his personality drastically and made him more violent.
At some point, he exiled Erza from the island and took control of the construction of the Tower of Heaven to summon the Dark Mage, and create the world to it's "true freedom". He bombed the ships that was supposed to take the slaves out of the island, and told them when Erza went insane with her newfound Magic Power, that she was doing all of this, escaped the island, and betrayed them. For the next 8 years, the slaves helped him build the Tower of Heaven as showing their gratitude for saving them from death.
Trivia[]
- In the manga, during his fight against Erza in the Tower of Heaven arc, Jellal's clothes are specially imported to resist disintegration or to use his Meteor genus. Although in the anime, it seems to wear instead of a sleeveless black shirt and cargo pants.
- During the rainbow, Jellal's coat has a pattern or mark that resembles the symbol of the waiting file from the back.
- In the animated version of the bow Oración Seis, Jellal pulls his coat from Erigor rather than a member of Naked Mummy.
- The magic seal of Jellal Heavenly Body is Lucy's Urano Metria Magic seal.
- It was Jellal who gave Erza her surname: Scarlet.
- Jellal was notably used as the profile picture of Just Some Guy without a Mustache, a YouTube account known for his unusually frequent appearances in comment sections, as well as the related Just Some Guy with a Mustache channel, which is Jellal but with a mustache.
- He changed his profile picture from that of Jellal to one of Garou at the very start of 2022. However, imposters sharing his name and a Jellal profile pic still exist as of 2023.
