Johan Andersen (Jesse Anderson in the 4Kids dub) is a Scandinavian (Southern in the dub) friend of Jaden Yuki, student of the Arctic Academy and one member of the Overseas Champions in season three of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
He was voiced by Kanako Irie in the Japanese version and Clay Adams in the English version.
History[]
When Johan, Austin, Jim and Amon arrived to Duel Academia, Professor Cobra tried to collect their and other students of Duel Academy duel energy to Yubel. When Yubel took all Duel Academia and its students to the Duel Monsters' Dimension. But when Pegasus created the "Ultimate Gem God - Rainbow Dragon" card and it was sent to Johan, it helped them and the Academia to return to home. And when it happened, Johan was left behind, and then Yubel possessed him. But later, Judai managed to rescue him from Yubel's possession. And later, Johan and the other friends returned to home.
Deck[]
Jesse plays a "Crystal Beast" deck, featuring the titular monsters based on seven precious gemstones. Pegasus was inspired to create the "Crystal Beasts" after hearing the story of a lithograph built from them as evidence of the reign of Julius Caesar, which ended up lost at sea when the ship transporting it to Rome was caught in a storm. The "Crystal Beasts" possess the unique ability of becoming Crystalized Continous Spells in the Spell and Trap Zone upon their destruction, allowing them to avoid being completely annihilited. When Duel Academy is sucked into an alternate dimension, Jesse acquires his most powerful Monster, "Rainbow Dragon", and devotes his strategy to gathering the rest of his "Crystal Beasts" in order to quickly summon it.
When possessed by Yubel, Jesse plays a deck featuring the "Advanced Crystal Beasts"; dark, twisted and feral versions of the regular cards. Through him, Yubel plays a strategy similar to his own, but places more emphasis on negating battle damage. She also makes use of the effect of "Advanced Dark" to increase the summoning speed of "Rainbow Dark Dragon". While still possessing Jesse, Yubel later switches to a "Sacred Beast" deck when Dueling Adrien Gecko, though the strategy she uses is very different from the one she used while possessing Marcel Bonaparte; rather than bypassing their summoning conditions via Special Summoning them from the Graveyard, Jesse's "Scared Beast" deck focuses on cards that duplicate themselves upon their Summoning or activation, allowing Yubel to quickly summon "Uria, Lord of Searing Flames", "Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder" and "Raviel, Lord of Phantasms" and fuse them into their combined form, "Armityle the Chaos Phantasm". As a backup strategy, Yubel stalls for time until she can have Jesse summon her onto the field and inflict effect damage via her effect and "Torch Golem".
Trivia[]
- Althought never actually show to be in love with Jaden. He is in some way, act as love rival to Yubel. As Yubel think Jesse steal Jaden love from her. Despite Alexis exist in story before Jesse and confirm to actually has one side crush with Jaden, Yubel ignore her completely. So too is Syrus as he consider Jaden best friend before get replace by Jesse in season 3.
- Both him and Yubel also have fusion monster with Jaden's Neos. While Alexis who is doesn't has one.
- Combine with the facts that he play Rainbow theme decks and spend so much screen time with Jaden. Some Yu-Gi-Oh fans make jokes that Jesse is homeosexual.
- In Manga adaption, he has less role in story and play insect deck.
