Jessica "Jess" Davis is one of the main characters of the novel and Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. She is a resident of the town of Crestmont in California, the setting of the show. She is also a student at the local high school; Liberty High. She was the second best friend of Hannah Baker before she committed suicide, and is a person on Hannah's tapes. It's later revealed that Jessica was raped by Bryce Walker, and after coming to terms with this, decides to stand up to him, Liberty High, and increase the awareness of rape victims.
She was portrayed by Alisha Boe.
Biography[]
Season One[]
Jessica is first introduced as one of the reasons Hannah Baker killed herself. She, Hannah and Alex Standall were a group of friends who spent time together at Monets, a local restaurant. Eventually Jessica and Alex stopped going to Monets to spend time together as boyfriend and girlfriend. Alex created a list at Liberty High called the "hot list" and rated girls based on their appearance. He put Hannah as "best ass" and Jessica as "worst ass" and broke up with Jessica. Jessica blamed Hannah for the break up after seeing the list and met her at Monets to confront her. Despite Hannah insisting Alex did not cheat on Jessica for her, Jessica did not believe her and slapped her before storming off. It is later revealed that Jessica began dating Justin Foley after her break up with Alex.
One weekend while Jessica's parents were away she held a party at her house and invited multiple students from the school, including Justin and Bryce Walker. Jessica and Justin got drunk and made out in Jessica's bedroom until Jessica fell unconscious and Justin stood by the door to guard her from unwanted attention. Bryce then came up to Justin and upon Justin telling him Jessica was unconscious requested to go in and see her after making suggestive sexual comments toward her. Justin allowed him to enter. After a couple of seconds Justin changed his mind and went in to stop Bryce forcing himself on Jessica but Bryce threw him out the room and locked the door. Rather than go off and get help from the others at the party, Justin chose to do nothing and allow Bryce to rape Jessica.
After the party, Jessica begins receiving flashbacks of the rape but Justin tells her that all that happened was they had sex in her bedroom. After hearing Hannah accuse Bryce of raping Jessica in her tapes Justin insists to Jessica that Hannah was lying. Jessica forgives Alex and the two develop a close friendship. Not knowing that Bryce raped her, Jess also becomes close with Bryce. Clay Jensen upon hearing Hannah accuse Bryce of raping Jessica in her tapes tries to inform Jessica of the event but Justin interferes by insisting Hannah was lying.
In the last episode Jessica attends one of Bryce's parties and plays cards with him and Zach Dempsey. Justin and Alex turn up and Justin grabs Jessica and tries to get her away from Bryce. Jessica pushes Justin back while Bryce, Zach, Alex and other guests at the party follow. After asking Justin why he doesn't want her to hang around Bryce Justin finally snaps and reveals she was in fact raped by Bryce. Traumatized and scared Jessica slaps Justin and storms off. Jessica meets with Clay in Monets and thanks him for trying to tell her the truth. Clay offers to help her bring Bryce to justice for what he did by using the tapes as evidence in court or if she pleases he can burn the tapes. Jessica tells him not to destroy the tapes but also does not agree to take action against Bryce, afraid of telling of what happened to her publicly.
When Jessica leaves Monet's, Justin attempts to reconcile with her but Jessica angrily tells him to forget about her and move on and says that she never wants to see him again. During the deposition at Liberty High following Hannah's suicide, Jessica tells the truth about her actions against Hannah. When she gets home that day she cries to her father and tells him what happened to her.
