“ | I'm not the one who's funny! You know what's funny? You. You're a joke, you old creep. You and your stuck-up, lame-ass school, with its bullies, sex-pest teachers... This place is a dump, and you're a big-nosed freak. This school rewards losers and bullies - I just stand up to them! | „ |
~ Jimmy stands up to Dr. Crabbelesnitch. |
“ | Here's the thing... Art is lost on me. I've always been more into music. | „ |
~ Jimmy to Ms. Phillips. |
James "Jimmy" Hopkins is the main protagonist of the Rockstar Games video game Bully (2006), as well as Scholarship Edition (2008) and Anniversary Edition (2016).
He is a former juvenile delinquent who had a troubled childhood and was expelled from several schools before being dumped at Bullworth Academy by his neglectful mother and new stepfather.
While initially portrayed as a stereotypical bully, he later undergoes a redemption when he riles together all of the school's cliques against his archenemy Gary Smith, a megalomaniac who attempted to turn the student body against itself and overthrow the principal.
He was voiced by Gerry Rosenthal.
Appearance[]
Though reasonably stocky, Jimmy is shorter than most students his age, at about 5' 0". He is a ginger with freckles on his cheeks, has a buzz-cut, and wears a gold stud earring on his left ear. In the game's intro, he wears a brown jacket over a white t-shirt, with faded blue jeans and white sneakers. His default school uniform consists of a blue Bullworth sweater-vest over a white school shirt, with khaki school slacks and the same sneakers.
Over the course of the game, Jimmy may obtain a wide variety of clothes, haircuts, and even tattoos. This allows the player to either have him adopt the look of one of the cliques or make his own unique fashion statement. He generally wears his uniforms more disordered than intended, such as an unbuttoned collar, rolled up sleeves, and an untucked shirt. Jimmy's hair is naturally ginger - when buying haircuts, the red cuts are always cheaper because he doesn't have to pay for dyeing.
In early screenshots, Jimmy was somewhat uglier. He had fewer freckles, a large red nose, and ears that stuck out. He also wore grey slacks and boots instead of khaki slacks and sneakers.
Abilities[]
Jimmy is a skilled fighter with a lot of stamina. As Jimmy finds the six transistor parts for the hobo, he teaches Jimmy six fight moves: uppercut, leg sweep, thrust kick, five-punch combo, roundhouse kick, and overhead punch.
After completing wrestling in Gym 1, he unlocks the headbutt and the three-hit combo. After completing wrestling in Gym 3, he unlocks the knee-drop. As Jimmy completes dodgeball classes (Gym classes 2, 4, and 5), his weapon accuracy improves.
Despite claiming to like music but not art, Jimmy is an exceptional painter and photographer, but a fairly amatuer musician. As Jimmy completes Art classes 1-4, he receives more health from kissing a girl (or a boy). Passing Art 1 gives Jimmy 125% health (peck on lips), Art 2 gives 150% (longer kiss), Art 3 gives 175% (prolonged kiss), and Art 4 gives 200% (full make-out). Passing Art 5 removes the need to give girls flowers, but boys still require flowers, and can't use the fourth kiss animation.
Description[]
Although slightly undersized, Jimmy's rough childhood has granted him a level of physical toughness, fighting skill (enabling him to hold his own against students larger and stronger than him), and a level of awareness and maturity that most of his Bullworth peers lack. Though he's aggressive and quick to fight, he's not truly malicious; he states in the prologue, "I only give people what they have coming to them."
When dealing with others, Jimmy tends to be rough-mannered. He talks abusively to people (such as Algie) even when helping them. Jimmy's only true friend at the school is Pete Kowalski. Jimmy is not always nice to Pete, calling him a dork to his face. Despite this, he seems to have a decent underlying nature, frequently moved to defend people weaker than him.
In the end, he defends and sticks up for Pete. In return, Pete provides a voice of reason for Jimmy, figuring out solutions to Jimmy's problems when fisticuffs and violence don't suffice. He helps the Nerds in several instances, despite his rude treatment of them. Later in the game, he helps Mandy, despite the fact that she was antagonistic to him - as well as Beatrice - throughout the school year.
Jimmy gets along with any teachers who are willing to treat him with respect, which - perhaps surprisingly - is all of them besides Mr. Hattrick. Jimmy also seems to be a talented artist, painting perfect pictures of Ms. Philips, even though he claims art has never been his thing, and that he's more into music. To a large extent, Jimmy's personality within the game depends on the players' control of him.
While his actions in the cutscenes are pre-determined, Jimmy can deal with situations in different ways. For example, he can order other bullies to leave their victims alone, or he can bully the other kids himself. He can also pay off bullies to leave him alone or start fights for no reason.
During the course of the in-game missions, he gains the interest of all the female clique members (Eunice, Beatrice, Pinky, Lola, Mandy, and Zoe), though the only girls he goes on actual dates with are Pinky and Zoe. Moreover, Zoe's the only character that Jimmy shows long-term interest in.
The end of the final mission closes with Zoe kissing Jimmy on the steps leading to the Academy. He can also kiss one boy in each clique (Trent, Cornelius, Gord, Vance, Kirby and Duncan), but this doesn't come into play in the actual storyline, and the player can choose whether to have him do this or not.
According to Dan Houser, Jimmy's later life after the events of the game will be a better one, if not a downright happier one. Since Jimmy's "too white-collared" in spite of his harsh upbringing, he doesn't end up descending into a criminal, like Grand Theft Auto protagonists Vic, Tommy, CJ, Niko, or Franklin - nor does Jimmy become a ruthless killer like Claude, Trevor, or Cash.
“ | I never saw him as being that level of degenerate... I saw him as a bad teen, because he comes from a tough home, who could go either direction. He's not going to be a carjacker. He's too white collar for that already. He's at a shit private school, but he's going to end up being really happy because he's at the worst bit of his life, or being a sort of messed up white collar doofus. He was an unpleasant soul, but he had a heart. To some extent, you could say the same was true of Niko in a bizarre way. But [Jimmy's] not trying to burn down the school, he's more trying to stand up to injustice. | „ |
~ Dan Houser, on Jimmy's future. |

---|---|
Intro to Chapter 1 | "So here I am, at probably the worst school in the country. Whose alumni are nothing but arms dealers, serial killers, and corporate lawyers. Real scum. And that old creep thinks he can tame me? We shall see, my friend. I only give people what they have coming to them." |
Intro to Chapter 2 | "With Russell pacified, I could be forgiven for thinking my troubles at Bullworth were over. But this place is a rotten onion. Peel off one stinking layer and there's another even smellier one beneath." |
Intro to Chapter 3 | "Now, Derby is really stupid, malevolent and rich. So it'll surprise none of you to discover in a future life he'll end up in Congress. But this is my story, not his. With the trust fund babies under control, it's time to turn my attention to their sworn enemies, those greaseball kids." |
Intro to Chapter 4 | "I'm starting to feel pretty good about myself. I've just taken control of two of the school's worst cliques, but I know there are bigger problems just around the corner. Problems with overdeveloped pituitary glands and brains the size of peas." |
Intro to Chapter 5 | "So here I am, suddenly the king of the school. I never meant for things to turn out this way. I just wanted to control a couple of psycho kids and be left alone. But now I guess I'm certainly going to live the good life." |
Intro to Chapter 6 | "Finally, everything is sorted out, more or less. I mean, I don't want to say we're going to live happily ever after or anything like that, but life is certainly going to get easier." |
Idle
- I guess I'll just loiter here for a while.
- I should do something. I really should.
- This looks like a nice place to just stand around.
- Yeah. Standing around doing nothing is just great.
- If I hang out here, something’s gonna happen for sure.
- My feet are sore.
- What's that smell?
- I think my shoes are too small.
- Wow. This is just riveting.
- I wish I was playing some video games or something.
- Come on, Jimmy, think of something to do.
- Maybe if I wait long enough, something will happen.
- Maybe I should write a letter to Mom.
- So, who's the hottest girl at school? Hm…
- Hm. Maybe beating up people won't solve anything? Nah.
- I guess this would count as keeping my nose clean.
- I think I might be getting a cold. I feel kinda sick.
- Man, does anything ever happen around here?
- How'd I get all this lint in my pocket?
- That wasn’t really Ms. Philips' cat Edna severed for dinner last night… was it?
- The happiest days of your life? Whatever.
- I am so bored right now.
- Everyone is so lame in this school.
- Why am I even here?
- I should be able to come up with something to do.
- Maybe I’ll just stand around here not doing anything.
- Shouldn't I be somewhere? Doing something?
- Why did I come here?
- I wonder what mom is doing now.
- Who's a bigger jerk - Hattrick or Burton?
- What is up with Miss Danvers and Crabblesnitch anyways?
Idle (truancy)
- Ah, skipping class to stand around. I love it!
- This is still better than being in class!
- I guess I’ll just hang around here instead of going to class.
- Oh, yeah, I wish I was in class.
- Hope I don’t get busted for skipping class.
- What am I doing skipping class?
- Shouldn’t I be in class right now?
- Hope they don’t miss me in class!
Idle (rainy)
- Freakin' garbage weather.
- Why couldn’t I go to school somewhere with a nice climate?
- Seems like it’s always raining.
- Oh, great. I’m standing around in the rain.
- This rain makes me want to be all emo. Or maybe not.
- Great. Rain.
- Maybe I’ll catch a cold and miss class.
Idle (snowy)
- Man, it's cold out here.
- I hope I don't catch a cold standing around like this.
- I should go throw snowballs at someone or something.
- I hope someone licks a lamp post.
- Come on, Jimmy. Don't just stand around in the snow.
- I'm freezing to death around here.
Idle (tired)
- I wish I was in my bed.
- Can't wait to get some sleep.
- What am I doing up at this hour?
- Yawns*
- Hm. Getting kinda sleepy.
- Yawns* Tired.
- Why am I not in bed?
- I should just go home and go to bed.
- Ah, man, I don’t wanna fall asleep here.
- I guess I could just sleep right here. Hope no one steals my stuff.
- Oh, I’m exhausted.
Detention
- I don't think you know what kindness means.
- Isn't there a law against slave labour?
- Who're you calling maggot, maggot?
Biology
- OHH, nasty!
- Ugh, that... smells... GREAT...
- Wow - that's disgusting.
- Oh, I think I'm gonna be sick!
- Ugh, so that's where Edna's meat lock comes from!
Drinking Beam Cola
- Ah... so refreshing!
- Mmmm!
- Ready to rock!
- Much better!
- Nice and cold!
- Come on sugar rush!
- Take a wrong with sugar and caffeine!
- Belches* Ah, carbonation!
- That hit the spot!
- Belches* Nice!
- I feel better now!
- Can never have too much sugar!
- Taste the chemical freshness! Awesome!
- That some good chemicals.
- A 100 percent pure artificial flavor.
- Ah... taste the chemical burn!
- I can feel my insides rotting already.
- Nice!
- Sweet!
- Just like eating 28 cubes of sugar.
- Mmmm, liquid sugar...
- Liquid sugar is healthy, isn't it?
- I love carbonated caffeine.
- Belches* That's the stuff!
- This'll keep me going.
- Belches* Just what I needed!
Riding the carnival
- This better be good!
- It has to be better than it looks.
- Looks a bit like a death trap!
- That can't be safe... oh well!
- This is probably not a good idea.
- Can't be worse than class!
- This looks like a good time!
- Didn't someone die here last year?
- What is that sick smell?
- I've been looking forward to this!
- I hope this thing induces nausea.
- I hope this gives my nightmares.
- Looks like this thing need repair.
- This thing looks older than me.
- Doesn't look like anyone ever clean this thing?
- This is probably not safe.
- This looks dangerous.
- I think I might be risking my life here... oh well!
- Is this thing safe? Probably not.
- I heard someone lost a leg here once.
- Alright... time the risk my life!
- This better be dangerous!
- I wonder if mom would like this.
- Hey is that Edna I just saw?
After riding a ride
- Huh, that was fun!
- I almost vomited. Yeah!
- Heh... that was pretty cool!
- I wonder what that was in the bottom of the seat.
- I guess this smell of puke added to the experience.
- That's the kind of experience, you really should share with someone.
- I'm surprised no one got hurt.
- Why would the floor be so sticky?
- Can't believe I paid for that.
- I almost don't feel ripped off.
- Maybe I should run away to join the carnival!?
- Damn. Nobody died.
- I was hoping someone would get hurt.
- Not enough puke.
- Is anyone gonna clean up that puke?
- I wonder what that crunching sound was.
- That wasn't exactly scary.
- Maybe the carnival isn't so bad!
- Ugh, I feel a little sick.
- Whoa, I'm kinda feeling dizzy.
- Well, that was fun... I guess.
- I don't think I've ever had this much fun. Ever.
Taunt comeback
- Yeah, whatever.
- Whatever, moron.
- You're talking out of your ass.
- Stop talking, ass.
- You better stop talking.
- You're really beginning to piss me off.
- What the hell are you talking about?
- You say the stupidest crap.
- That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard.
- Maybe I should just kick your ass, huh?
- You know what? Maybe I should just beat you.
- Why don't you just shut up?
- That's moronic.
- Shall we just turn this into a fight?
- Just shut your mouth.
- You want me to shut your stupid mouth?
- Shut your trap.
Apologizing to girl
- Oh, I'm sorry, sweetie.
- Look, I'm sorry. I messed up.
- I was just kidding, baby.
- I didn't mean it, honey.
- Just pulling your leg, babe.
- You're so pretty when you're angry.
- Come on, baby. Don't be so serious.
- Just kidding, baby.
- Don't be so mad.
- Come on, girl. Relax.
Apologizing to weak student
- Calm down.
- Come on. I'm your friend.
- Don't be so serious.
- Come on, lighten up.
- Don't worry about it.
- What's with the sour face?
- I don't bite. Come on.
- Don't worry, it's going to be okay.
- I just joke around a lot.
- Hey, relax. Just kidding.
- I'm not gonna hurt you.
- Relax, I was just playing.
- Haha, just messing around.
- Just kidding.

- I was just pulling your leg.
- Come on cheer up.
- You gotta admit. That was funny.
- Haha. Did you really believe me?
- Don't be so serious... haha.
- I'm sorry, okay? Sorry.
- Come on I was just kidding around.
- Just joking.
- Relax, I was just joking around.
- Come on, give me a break.
- What's the matter? Can't you take a joke?
- Oh come on, that was funny.
- I was just messing around.
- Come on, don't be a cry-baby.
- Aah, cheer up.
- I was just joking.
- Just kidding.
Apologizing to tough student
- There's no need to waste our time.
- Let bygones be bygones. What do you say?
- Don't be so angry man. Just chill.
- Come on. We can all get along.
- Just think about it for a second.
- Take a deep breath.
- Mellow out dude.
- Let's not fight.
- Let's not be stupid.
- You know... you're alright.
- It's no big deal.
- You don't wanna fight me.
- It's not worth it, let's just chill.
- Don't worry about it.
- Come on. Don't waste my time.
- Just relax man.
- Listen. You don't wanna do this.
- I'd be a good friend to have.
- I'm willing to let it slide.
- Come on. Water under the bridge in all that?
Apologizing to authority
- That was a mistake. I'm sorry.
- This is got to be a mix-up.
- Please accept my apology.
- You got the wrong guy - I think.
- I must have misunderstood something. Sorry.
- I'll improve right away.
- I'll be better.
- I think Crabblesnitch wanted to see you in his office.
- It was just too much school spirit.
- Boys will be boys, you know?
- I'm keeping my nose clean.
- I did no such thing.
- There must be a mistake somewhere.
- There must be some sort of mistake.
- I was just on my way to Dr. Crabblesnitch's office.
- Are you sure it was me?
- I'm sorry. Won't do it again.
- Won't happen again, sorry.
- I'm so sorry.
- I crossed the line, sorry.
- Um... like... I'm sorry?
- No no no... not me.
- Um... it wasn't me?
- Just joking, you know?
- It wasn't on purpose.
- Please, don't get me in trouble.
- Can you let me off? Just this once.
- Don't play me.
- You didn't see the whole incident, gimme a break.
- Come on, it looked worse than it was.
- It was an accident.
- Wasn't me.
- Look, I promise not to do it again.
- Please let me off.
- I didn't mean too.
- It was... uhh... someone else!
- I didn't do it.
- Oh, did you see that?
- Not my fault.
- Come ooon.
- Aw, I didn't mean it.
Pleading to bully
- I don't want any trouble.
- Can't we just get along?
- Why me?
- I don't deserve this. Please.
- Please. You don't wanna do this.
- Come on we don't have to fight.
- What did I do? Sorry.
- I didn't mean to piss you off.
- Please let me off the hook.
- I'm really sorry.
- I didn't mean anything.
- Please don't hurt me.
- Come on just leave me alone.
- I'm no threat to you.
- Come on give me a break.
- What did I ever do to you?
- Don't pick on me.
- Oh please.
- Don't bother with me.
- Come on, don't be a bully.
Shoving

- Gotta watch out for that.
- It's just like riding a bike.
- Forget this.
- Heh! That was exciting!
- Well great!
- Get back up!
- Shouldn't be that hard.
- Not exactly what I meant, but cool in its own way.
- That was lame.
- What a wipe.
- I got served.
- Heh! Nice slam.
- Wipeout!
- I gotta stop spilling.
- That sucks.
- Getting used to getting hurt.
- I'm beginning to like this pain.
- Well, that sucked.
- That was awful!
- Well, oops!
- Um, how'd that happen?
- That. Didn't hurt.
- Crashing in style!
- Okay, that was annoying.
- Failed again.
- That's not what I thought would happen.
Stealing a bike
- Get off that bike.
- I'll take that.
- Take a walk.
- Get off of that.
- Get lost, sucker.
- Scram!

- Just gimme the bike.
- You'll get it back later.
- Can I borrow this?
- Excuse me.
- Forgive me.

- Don't make this any uglier.
- Sorry about that.
- Sorry, but I need this.
- Can I use your bike?
- Gimme that, now!
- Eat it!
- Mine!
- You don't need that.
- I like your ride.
- Don't worry!
- Just relax!
- Just chill.
- Take a rest.
- Sorry. Need your bike.
- That's my bike.
- Sweet bike!
- Nice wheels.
- I'm taking your bike.

Trivia[]
- In the story, Jimmy canonically kisses most of the girls after beating certain missions: Eunice (This Is Your School & Movie Tickets), Angie (Art 1), Beatrice (That Bitch & The Diary), Pinky, (Carnival Date), Lola (Lola's Race & The Tenements), Mandy (Discretion Assured), and Zoe (Final Showdown).
- In the intro for chapter 5, Mandy also kisses Jimmy's cheek. In the same cutscene, he later flirts with Christy.
- During game development, it was initially possible to kiss Gloria, one of the younger girls. Her romance-related quotes can still be found in the game files, such as passionately telling Jimmy to kiss her.
- Jimmy has his Art class with Sheldon, Beatrice, Ivan, Lefty, and Mandy. He has English/Biology/Geography/Maths with Sheldon, Beatrice, and Bryce, though only Sheldon and Beatrice are in Jimmy's Chemistry class.
- Jimmy may have been involved with minor criminal activities prior the game, as he proves he is not above committing crimes if it benefits him, such as vandalizing Mr. Hattrick's house and breaking into Derby's hideout to destroy his crapula maxima.
- Since Rembrandt is the first gay Rockstar protagonist, Jimmy would potentially be the second if players decide to kiss boys in Bully, followed by Trevor (hinted), and the female Online Protagonist if players decide to hire strippers/prostitutes.
- Jimmy is one of the youngest Rockstar Games protagonists, alongside Red Harlow (aged roughly 12), Jack Marston (aged 15 or 16), and Rembrandt (aged roughly 17). However, the other three are not the sole protagonists of their respective games; moreover, Red and Jack are only so young in one mission of their respective games, whereas Jimmy is 15 throughout all of Bully, making him the youngest sole protagonist in a whole Rockstar game.
- Depending on a student's size, Jimmy may humiliate them in different ways: little kids (Karen, Melody, Gloria, Pedro, Sheldon), fat kids (Eunice, Ray, Melvin, Fatty, Algie), same height as Jimmy (Gary, Pete, Const, Ivan, Gordon, Lance, Earnest, Donald, Bucky, Tad, Gord, Lefty, Vance, Dan, Kirby, Davis, Wade, Otto, Duncan), taller kids (Trevor, Thad, Cornelius, Derby, Parker, Bryce, Chad, Justin, Johnny, Ricky, Peanut, Lucky, Hal, Ted, Bo, Ethan, Tom, Trent, Troy, Edgar, Henry, Jerry, Angie, Beatrice, Christy, Pinky, Lola, Mandy, Zoe), and the tallest kids (Bif, Norton, Damon, Casey, Luis, Juri, Russel, Leon, Gurney, Omar).
- Jimmy's daily schedule is as follows: wake up (8:00 am), class 1 (9:00 - 11:30 am), class 2 (1:00 - 3:30 pm), bed time (7:00 pm), curfew (11:00 pm), get tired (1:00 am), pass out (2:00 am).
- If Jimmy doesn't sleep, he will pass out at 2:00 am. Gordon references this by complaining that his parents only let him stay out until this time on school days.
