Hero Overview

But who and what is the Superman of Metropolis? He's an alien! Case closed.
~ Jimmy talking to his fans on "Flamebird".

James "Jimmy" Bartholomew Olsen is the tritagonist of the 2023 cartoon animated series My Adventures with Superman.

He is a reporter at the Daily Planet who has a keen interest in conspiracy theories, the paranormal, and who wishes to become a professional photographer. He is also the best friend to both Clark Kent and Lois Lane, as well as the love interest of Kara Zor-El.

He is voiced by Ishmel Sahid.

Appearance[]

Jimmy is a young and skinny African American man with a curly fade haircut. He has dark brown eyes and black hair.

Personality[]

Jimmy is an enthusiastic journalist with an insatiable passion for the paranormal and supernatural, often surprising people with his unconventional beliefs. Despite his role as a journalist dedicated to finding well-founded facts, he manages to blend his passion for the mysterious and unexplained with his investigative skills, making him an adept detective in unraveling mysteries.

His boundless belief in aliens, conspiracies, cryptids, ghosts, and other enigmatic phenomena knows no limits, and he firmly stands by the existence of creatures like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. To share his eccentric ideas, he runs a YouTube channel with a small but dedicated following, where he fearlessly presents outlandish conclusions for every lead he comes across. Jimmy's favorite speculations often involve mermaids or aliens being behind various occurrences, and surprisingly, he occasionally turns out to be right, such as his conclusion that Superman is an extraterrestrial being.

Despite his vivacious, absent-minded and at times annoying nature, which often lands him in predicaments, he can always count on Clark to swoop in and save him just in the nick of time. In matters of romance, Jimmy plays the role of a frantic and presumptuous matchmaker for Lois and Clark, though his efforts sometimes inadvertently hinder their progress.

When it comes to Superman, Jimmy shares Lois's interest in uncovering the hero's origins but stands out due to his respect for personal boundaries. He patiently waits for the right moment to reveal his knowledge, allowing Clark to feel comfortable with the truth. Unlike Lois, who is primarily focused on exposing Superman's identity, Jimmy channels his attention into understanding the hero's mysteries and enhancing his public image. He is a dependable friend, always ready to offer assistance or a listening ear, and despite his quirks, his genuine care and enthusiasm make him a valuable member of Superman's inner circle.

Biography[]

Background[]

Little is currently known about Jimmy's past or his upbringing. However, there's a good chance that he took an interest in the supernatural from a young age, and for an unspecified amount of time has been documenting his "discoveries" on his YouTube channel called "FlameBird'.

Sometime prior to the events of Season One, Jimmy and Clark became roommates and best friends. Together, the two applied for and were hired as interns at the Daily Planet.

Season 1[]

After successfully landing a job at Daily Planet with Clark, the two of them arrived at their first day where they were greeted by Lois Lane, fellow intern who was tasked by her boss Perry White to mentor the two and show them the ropes. She instead brought the two of them along with her on an investigation into giant robots that she believes are connected to a string of dangerous technology sweeping the streets of Metropolis. During this investigation, Jimmy and Lois bond as Jimmy teases her for liking Clark. After a dangerous run in with the robots, Lois and Jimmy are saved by Superman, who is actually just Clark. This incident sparks Lois' mission to uncover Superman's true identity and publish all of his secrets.

Over the course of the season, Jimmy accompanies Clark and Lois on several of their investigations and assignments, including attending billionaire Anthony Ivo's tech demonstration. During all of this, Jimmy keeps up with regularly posing on his YouTube channel dedicated entirely to conspiracy theories and actively tries to get Clark and Lois to take him seriously.

You Will Believe a Man Can Lie[]

While Lois and Clark continue to investigate dangerous weapons in the city, Jimmy accompanies their coworker Steve Lombard on an assignment he believes is related to work. However, he quickly discovers that Steve is actually having Jimmy film him for his YouTube channel titled NAH, which makes videos solely dedicated to debunking FlameBird's theories. Jimmy is upset upon discovering this and Steve makes him feel worse by being up the fact Clark and Lois had been ignoring Jimmy all day, causing Jimmy to doubt the validity of his friendships with them.

My Adventures With Mad Science[]

After Clark and Lois bailed out on a camping trip with Jimmy (who wanted to find and document bigfoot), Jimmy opted to go on the trip himself. However, during his expedition he was kidnapped by Monsieur Mallah and Brain. After revealing to them that he was under distress from feeling abandoned by his only two friends, they took pity on him and talked to him about his issues. During their talk, they revealed their tragic backstory with Jimmy, and even their shared love for the supernatural, validating many of Jimmy's theories as being true.

Lois and Clark arrive to Jimmy's rescue, only to discover he was never in actual danger. Jimmy explains to them why he was upset and felt abandoned, and they all make up. Clark, having just revealed his secret identity as Superman to Lois, felt it was the right time to tell Jimmy the truth. When he does, Jimmy interrupts him and exclaims that he already knew and that it was obvious. He brings up the first day they met and how Clark accidentally pulled the handle off their apartment door. Their conversation is interrupted when a black hole powered by one of Monsieur Mallah and Brain's machines becomes unstable and the three of them, along with Monsieur Mallah and Brain, have to work together to shut it down. They're successful and say their goodbyes to Monsieur Mallah and Brain before they leave to live in a dimension where they can love each other and not face prejudice for who they are.

Kiss Kiss Fall in Portal[]

Clark decides to come clean with Lois and Jimmy, revealing the enigmatic platform hidden beneath his parents' farm, which Jimmy deduces is a part of a spaceship. While Jimmy explores the spaceship's obelisks, Clark invites Lois on a date to mend their relationship, acknowledging the past deceit. The following day, Jimmy becomes concerned about Clark's date preparations and visits Lois, only to find her planning an investigation into Clark's origins. Grateful for Clark's unwavering support, Lois is determined to assist him in uncovering his true heritage.

During Lois and Jimmy's absence, Clark is visited by Mr. Mxyzptlk, who knows his secret as Superman. Mxyzptlk warns of danger to Lois, prompting Superman to take action. However, Mxyzptlk manipulates Superman into assisting in a peculiar heist, revealing that Lois was never actually in peril. They are then transported to another dimension, leaving Superman perplexed and worried about Lois's safety.

Meanwhile, Lois and Jimmy form an unlikely alliance with alternate versions of Lois Lane from the League of Lois Lanes, learning about their mission to capture Mxyzptlk. The League suspects Superman's involvement in Mxyzptlk's plans and confronts him, inadvertently causing harm to the hero. Mxyzptlk escapes, leading Lois to secretly agree to accompany him to the League's headquarters in a bid to uncover their secrets related to Superman. During their investigation, they stumble upon a keycard and an orb containing images of alternate Supermen, some of whom are nefarious. As Mxyzptlk escapes once more, Lois is left with a green crystal from the orb, hinting at a deeper and mysterious connection to Superman's past.

Zero Day (Parts 1 and 2)[]

In a government facility, The General releases criminals previously captured by Task Force X, using their fear to compel obedience and assign them a special mission. Meanwhile, Superman develops a new superpower, super-hearing, which he uses to tirelessly monitor the city, aiding people and fighting crime without rest, even resorting to coffee to stay alert. After leaving flowers for Lois at her office, he uncovers the General's ominous intentions through intercepted communication.

Despite his growing exhaustion, Superman remains determined, chasing down a criminal named Mist but inadvertently causing damage due to fatigue. This incident shocks the public, and he presses on, resolute in his quest to find the General. At the Daily Planet, Lois receives flowers from Superman, but her joy is overshadowed when star reporter Vicki Vale seeks to write a negative article about the hero. Lois and Jimmy struggle to shield Superman's reputation.

Deeply concerned for Superman's well-being, Lois and Jimmy reach out to Clark for help. He promises to make amends but continues searching for the General. The duo discovers that Vicki exploited them for a story in the Gotham Gazette. Meanwhile, Superman confronts Mist, leading to an ambush by the new Task Force X, resulting in his capture and departure from Metropolis. This leaves Lois and Jimmy in a state of shock, prompting them to join forces with the Newskid Legion to tirelessly search for Superman. While guilt gnaws at Lois for not offering support when Clark needed it, Jimmy reassures her that they will locate their missing hero.

Meanwhile, Superman finds himself imprisoned at Task Force X's covert base, facing interrogation by the General. The General demands information about an impending alien invasion, but Superman genuinely lacks knowledge of it. The General reveals his presence during a prior invasion event known as Zero Day, where he and Amanda Waller encountered an alien leader in a red cape. Now serving as the General, he has been preparing Earth for an upcoming invasion, forming Task Force X and adapting alien weaponry for human use. He aggressively interrogates Superman, hoping to extract crucial answers.

As the General grows uncertain about their mission, he confides in Waller, expressing reluctance to hand Superman over to Dr. Ivo for further questioning. Waller, however, is willing to resort to extreme measures to extract information from Superman, a stance the General opposes. Task Force X members, including Ivo, face imprisonment once more. Livewire exploits a security lapse, facilitating their escape. Ivo reclaims his Parasite armor and confronts Superman, who refuses to engage in combat, believing himself to be a potential weapon of mass destruction sent to conquer Earth.

Ivo launches an attack on Superman, expanding in size by absorbing energy from the city's electricity grid. In a bid to aid Superman, Jimmy broadcasts a Flamebird video, rallying the citizens of Metropolis to support their hero. They respond by shutting down electrical devices, weakening Parasite. This collective effort allows Superman to gain X-ray vision, which he uses to separate Ivo from the Parasite armor.

Superman eventually returns to the Daily Planet, sharing a passionate moment with Lois. In the midst of these developments, Jimmy stumbles upon "File X," containing an image of an evil alternate-universe Superman. Simultaneously, at Task Force X's base, Amanda Waller is promoted to commanding officer, tasked with the mission to eliminate Superman. The General, now named Sam, is assigned to track down and eliminate Superman using the Omega Cannon, a formidable weapon crafted by Dr. Ivo.

Hearts of the Fathers[]

In a nightmarish vision, Clark witnesses Nemesis Omega laying waste to Earth, killing Lois and Jimmy while bearing Clark's own face. This horrifying sight jolts Clark awake, prompting him to return to the spaceship that brought him to Earth. Inside the vessel, he confronts his father, Jor-El, expressing his unwavering determination to protect Earth in case Krypton ever attempts to conquer it again. However, their communication is hampered by a language barrier, leading Clark to exit the ship.

Later, Clark and Lois make preparations for Thanksgiving in Smallville, contemplating the possibility of seeking assistance from the General, who had previously made an attempt on Clark's life. At the Daily Planet, they make a surprising discovery that they have both been promoted. Eager to celebrate, Clark and Lois leave work early to join the Kent family. However, their joy is short-lived when Lois's father, Sam, arrives at the Kent household and reveals himself as the General. Amidst these revelations, Jimmy endeavors to address the issue of secrets within their group.

During these events, a mysterious sphere containing File X is uncovered, unveiling a hologram of an evil Superman from an alternate universe. Clark becomes exposed to a green crystal from the sphere, causing him considerable distress. Subsequently, the spaceship detects the crystal's presence and deploys robots throughout the Kent farm. Sam believes that the invaders from Zero Day have returned, prompting him to request assistance from Task Force X. Lois uncovers Sam's true identity as the General who once tried to eliminate Superman and rushes to aid him. Meanwhile, Jimmy realizes that the robots are vulnerable to the green crystal. With quick thinking, Superman uses the crystal to destroy the ship's heart, successfully closing the portal but becoming trapped in the process. In a holographic message, his father encourages him to persevere and live on. The ship is obliterated, and Superman sustains severe injuries. Sam attempts to harm him but is thwarted by Lois, who vehemently defends Superman as a hero. They later come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, with Jimmy revealing his newfound wealth from selling Flamebird to the Daily Planet. Meanwhile, in the depths of space, Brainiac and a Kryptonian warrior continue to plot Earth's conquest, undeterred by the planet's resistance.
