| “ | I'm facing the reality of bullying head-on. The rest of the world is content to turn a blind eye to the problem. Our whole society… they make a show of it when a kid commits suicide, but nothing changes about the reasons why. And every time, some bully with tears in his eyes always has the exact same line: "I had no idea they would ever kill themselves." (…) They had no idea how their cruelty affects the person on the receiving end. You know why? Because they've never suffered. They don't know what it means to feel unsafe. I take care of that. I show them how much they've taken their safety for granted. Their actions need to have consequences. Even if they don't realize until it's too late. | „ |
| ~ Kuwana explaining his motive. |
Jin Kuwana (real name Yu Kitakata) is the main antagonist and final boss of the 2021 thriller drama video game Lost Judgment.
He was a former school teacher turned vigilante and Ijincho handyman. Upon knowing many of his students turned out to be notorious bullies who drove innocents to suicide, he decided to take responsibility and take justice in his own hands.
Despite being the main antagonist of the game he appeared in, he was ultimately portrayed as an anti-hero who served as a foil to Takayuki Yagami, who had an opposed ideal of justice, he also spent half (or more) of the game siding with the protagonists to help them defeat bigger threats and prevalent social issues, such as teenage bullying and corruption. Thus, surprisingly none of his heroic acts were self-serving or out of pragmatism.
In the original Japanese audio, he was modeled after and voiced by Koji Yamamoto, who also played Soreo Hiden/Kamen Rider Ichi-Gata. In the English dub, he was voiced by Todd Haberkorn.
Appearance[]
Kuwana has a slim build, short hair, and a thin goatee. Though he lacked the goatee during his tenure as a homeroom teacher. His slim build is similar to that of Akihiro Ehara, allowing him to pose as a stand-in for Ehara when using a 3D printing of the latter's face, albeit disguised with a face mask and glasses.
Kuwana wears a cognac brown cafe racer leather jacket (later an olive green military jacket) over a charcoal gray T-shirt, a pair of black jeans, and a pair of dark brown leather combat boots.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
He start off as Yu Kitakata, a teacher at Kurokawa Academy who fails to prevent a student's suicide attempt after being bullied, leading to his disgrace and firing. Filled with guilt and disgusted by the bullies escaping justice, he becomes the vigilante "Jin Kuwana," a handyman who manipulates the system to ensure bullies face consequences, often by orchestrating their murders and using them to frame other criminals.
Vigilante Life as Jin Kuwana[]
After leaving his teaching career, Kitakata adopted the alias Jin Kuwana. He established himself as a handyman in Isezaki Ijincho. He became the mastermind behind a series of deaths of individuals he deemed responsible for the bullying and subsequent tragedies. He would often identify the bullies responsible for driving children to suicide and then offer to help the victims' parents get their revenge.
Abilities[]
Jin devised a number of complex schemes to allow the parents of bullying victims to torture and murder their children's bullies, and left no evidence of either his or the parents' involvement, with each crime going unsolved until Yagami's involvement - even when such crimes involved high-ranking government officials such as Reiko Kusumoto. He made a mockery of the entire justice system in collaboration with Akihiro Ehara using a complex plan involving a falsified sexual battery incident which initially fooled public prosecutor Sadao Takano and defense attorney Saori Shirosaki, the latter of whom was involved in uncovering the AD-9 conspiracy. Jin also manipulated an entire class of Kurokawa Academy students into doing his bidding, and even accounted for the actions of Yagami and his cohort, Kazuki Soma and RK, and Reiko Kusumoto in his machinations. He also possesses incredibly high martial arts knowledge and is capable of effectively changing his identity to escape from law enforcement.
Personality[]
Jin Kuwana is defined by vigilant rage and a warped sense of justice, fueled by guilt over his inability to prevent a student's suicide attempt. This experience made him resentful of bullies and driven by an obsessive, singular goal to punish them, often overlooking the unintended consequences of his morally questionable methods. He is a complex character who acts with a resolute but brutal purpose, ultimately driven by a desire to protect the innocent and expose the flaws of the justice system, even by committing extreme acts himself.
