Power's the same everywhere. The wealthy and influential just love to live above the law.
~ Jo Mullein
You can hungry for purpose. Starving for it, in fact.
~ Jo Mullein

Sojourner "Jo" Mullein is a galactic law enforcement officer, a part of the Green Lantern Corps. Assigned to a sector so distant from Oa that its numbering remains uncertain, she simply labels it as the Far Sector. A founding member of the Justice League in the Future State timeline, Jo Mullein made her debut in Far Sector #1 (January, 2020) and was brought to life by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell.

Hytory[]

Origin[]

Jo hailed from a low-income family grappling with rent, despite her parents' relentless efforts to provide the best education for their three daughters. The strain between her parents exacerbated their situation, culminating in a divorce. On September 11, 2001, as Jo accompanied her father outside the divorce court, they witnessed the World Trade Center attack, prompting them to leap into action to aid survivors and pledge to make a difference in the world. Graduating from high school, Jo's celebration was marred by her family facing harassment from a racist establishment owner.

Accepted into Princeton University, Jo enlisted in the military to fund her studies. Overseas, witnessing wounded children and locals burying loved ones made her reevaluate her actions, leading her to ponder the ethical implications. She briefly returned to Princeton before pursuing a career in law enforcement. However, her police tenure took a grim turn when she witnessed her partner almost fatally beat a suspect. Reporting him to internal affairs led to her dismissal following her public support for the BLM movement on social media, but she agreed to testify against her former partner in court. Amid drowning her sorrows in drinks, Jo was approached by a Guardian offering her a job.

Far Sector[]

The City Enduring, a reconstructed home for three rival races after their twin planet system's destruction, Sojourner Mullein begins her duty. To prevent conflicts, the inhabitants use Emotion Exploit (EE), a drug dampening emotional responses. Jo, granted an exemption from EE, faces a murder—the first in five centuries.

Investigating, Jo encounters a suspect from the keh-Topli race, swiftly killed by an unknown Nah member, who eludes capture. Amidst protests against EE, sparked by the murder, Jo discovers the culprit's wife blaming EE for her husband's killer lacking emotional processing.

Her probe unveils a criminal nexus peddling Switchoff, countering EE, thriving on a virtual dark net controlled by @Ats. Sweating in "sweatshops," Switchoff addicts create memes as currency. Unraveling deeper plots, Jo exposes two council members' fascist agenda, leading to chaos with Averrup's murder and Marth's arrest, enabling @Blaze's coup. With limited charge, Jo confronts the City's fleet. Boarding the flagship, she persuades the commander, aided by CanHaz, to cease fire, ending the coup and initiating EE withdrawal.

Battery Destruction[]

Jo was summoned to Oa along with other Lanterns after a decision to downsize the Green Lantern Corps due to the United Planets' formation. A blast destroyed the Central Power Battery, leaving Jo and a few others with functioning rings. Jo, Teen Lantern, and Simon Baz investigated the explosion's cause.

Teen Lantern's impulsive attack forced Jo to intervene to prevent a potential conflict. They subdued her and sought medical help for her unconscious state caused by Jessica Cruz, now a Sinestro Corps member. Attempting to disarm her, Jo discovered Keli's subconscious creation of Young Justice.

Realizing Simon remained unaffected, Jo convinced him to persuade Keli to wake from her coma-like state.

Future State[]

Twenty years into the future, Jo is a member of the reformed Justice League. Prior to this, she earned a reputation as one of the leading detectives, having rallied the Corps to unravel Oa's greatest mystery. Amid internal conflicts that led to the replacement of members by the White Martians, tarnishing the League's image, Jo emerged as a primary force in investigating the case. Through her efforts, the Justice League claimed victory over the Hyperclan. As a result, Jo was elected as the team's leader.

Powers and Skills[]

Jo's ring, akin to the standard Green Lantern rings, boasts a range of abilities with notable distinctions. Unlike conventional rings, it doesn't require a battery for recharging; instead, it gradually recharges over time. However, it's less potent than other rings and, if fully depleted, leaves the bearer more vulnerable for an extended period. Rather than drawing power from the user's will to overcome fear, this ring harnesses the will to coexist with fear. Additionally, it demonstrated the unique capability to convert Jo's consciousness into electrical signals, granting her access to the City Enduring's virtual network.

Indomitable Will: Jo possesses exceptional determination, facing challenges and fears, propelling her to persevere even in the most adverse situations.

Military Protocol and Law: Her military background and experience grant Jo deep insight into military protocols and legal matters, making her an expert in both military procedures and law.

Investigation: Acknowledged as one of the Corps' finest detectives, Jo showcases exceptional investigative skills, unraveling intricate mysteries and resolving challenging cases.

Weapons and Green Lantern Ring Abilities: Jo's distinctive ring, gradually recharging without reliance on a battery, comes with limitations, offering reduced capacity for constructs and flight compared to conventional rings. Unlike others, its energy is influenced by the will to live with fear. Additionally, Jo exhibits magical abilities such as creating energy constructs, generating force fields, projecting energy, and the ability to fly.

Energy Construct Creation: Utilizing her Green Lantern ring, Jo can generate energy constructs limited by the ring's somewhat reduced output. These constructs are manifestations of her willpower and can take various forms, serving multiple purposes according to her intent and imagination. Force Field: Another capability of Jo's ring is the creation of protective force fields. These fields act as barriers against physical and energy-based attacks, serving to shield her and others from harm.

Energy Projection: Jo can project energy blasts or beams from her ring, utilizing the stored energies to deliver directed and controlled bursts of force. These energy projections can serve as offensive measures against adversaries or to manipulate surroundings as needed.

Flight: While her ring's flight capacity is somewhat diminished compared to standard Green Lantern rings, Jo can still harness its power to enable flight. Though it might not offer the same speed or maneuverability as typical rings, it grants her aerial mobility and access to different vantage points during missions or battles.

Leadership: Jo emerged as one of the founding members of the new Justice League and was voted in as its leader.
