John Brickner is the main protagonist of the 2009 action film, Damage.

He was portrayed by Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Biography[]

John Brickner, who was released on parole after serving four of seven years in jail for second-degree manslaughter, relocates to Seattle and works as a bouncer at a nightclub at night and as a construction worker during the day. He runs across Veronica Reynolds, the widow of the guy he killed in self-defense, one day after work. It turns out that after John wrote her several letters of apologies over the years, she petitioned to have him freed on parole. Additionally, she informs him that her daughter Sarah, who is eight years old, needs a heart transplant and that he should pay for the $250,000 procedure.

John, who had previously turned down a job opportunity, finds fight promoter Reno Paulsaint with the assistance of bartender Frankie. Reno tells him he can make six figures in the business, but he again turns down the opportunity when he learns it's in the underground fighting industry. He gets let go from his construction job the following day, but not before saving his employer from a heart attack. He chooses to compete in the fighting event later that evening and defeats his first opponent. John advances through the ranks and earns thousands of dollars while fighting for Reno and Frankie. However, it comes out that Reno owes a syndicate more than $150,000 USD, and he has to pay them within a week or else they will harm Frankie.

After winning a fierce battle, John finds Veronica unconscious in her apartment and quickly takes her to the hospital. She had cut her wrists after learning that an organ donor source had rejected her request for a donor's heart. When he learns that the fight is to the death, he wins the bout but forfeits the battle. Reno loses his bet as a result, and the syndicate roughs him up. The tycoon Veltz, who happens to be the owner of John's previous job, picks him up the following day. Veltz offers to pay John's US$150,000 wager for the main event or to settle Reno's debt as a thank you for saving his son-in-law from a heart attack.

The following evening, John takes on and defeats Wendell Timmons, the reigning champion. It turns out that Reno's friend the Deacon paid for his side of the battle. Ultimately, John pays for Sarah's heart transplant while Reno makes him an additional offer.
