John Dory is one of the three tritagonists (alongside Spruce and Clay) of Trolls Band Together. He is the leader of the well known boyband, BroZone, and the oldest brother of Spruce, Clay, Floyd, and Branch.
He is voiced by Eric André who also voiced Darius in Sing 2 in the film and by Kyle Chapple in Trolls: Remix Rescue.
Personality[]
Being the oldest of five brothers, John has a tendency to be pushy, aggressive and a bit uptight. In his teenage years, he had always expected perfection from all of his brothers to create good shows. His bossiness would lead to the breakup and seperation of him and his brothers. He is also socially inappropriate, as seen when he crashes Bridget and Gristle Jr's wedding just to talk to Branch, and where he hits his youngest brother and picks him up despite the latter struggles of refusal. Despite this, he still has a heart, as his main reason for wanting to reunite the band is to rescue his brother Floyd. Also, John adores his brothers very much and deep down misses them more then anything, but could't find the right words to say it to them out of fear they would reject him and not forgive him for his past actions. In addition, John isn't afraid to stand up for those who are closes to him, whether its family or friends.
At first, John believed that he doesn't need to change himself, although he did make an effort to overcome his obsession for perfection. However, realizing how much his aggressiveness, obsession and pushiness was hurting his brothers, John realize his mistakes and that it's never too late to change. During the adventure with his brothers to save Floyd, John went through a personality change as he becomes more caring to those he is closes to, especially to his siblings. Also, through Poppy's influences, he becomes fun, optimistic and outgoing as she brought out sides of himself that he had either forgotten or never knew he had.
Physical Appearance[]
John Dory has the same skin tone as the rest of his brothers, except he has teal green hair. He also wears a large leather vest with a fuzzy black spotted collar, green cut off shorts, and a leather glove on his left hand.
History[]
Background[]
Sometime between Branch's birth and BroZone's last concert, it appears that the brothers were left under the care of Grandma Rosiepuff as their soul remaining relative. This meant John Dory was left looking out for 4 little brothers. He found the task difficult and took the role in BroZone as "the Leader" very seriously. The problem was he turned things into an obsession with perfection. Clay was forced to wear Funderpants because he was "the Fun one" and Spruce was forced to maintain his image of "the hearthrobe".
During concert prep, Clay and Spruce were told to maintain their perfection, but John Dory's constant stressing caused Branch to get nervous. This left Floyd as the one to console in him. Eventually when it came to their last concert, Branch was finally ready to perform for the first time, and John Dory had promised BroZone's fans they'd achieve perfect family harmony. This had never been done before.
During the concerts opening song, John Dory saw an opportunity to start the Family Harmony and called his Brothers to follow his lead. However, a brief moment of hesitation resulted in the brothers failing to do so as they lost formation during a dance routine and fell on the ground (except Branch) in a heap.
That was the final straw for Clay and Spruce who had enough of John Dory's constant demand for perfection. A row broke out between the three and they threatened to quit. John Dory, however quit and in anger left them behind first.
John Dory left the other Pop Trolls entirely and went out on his own. He became a hermit as he realized his brothers were right about his obsession in achieving the perfect family harmony. He stayed away from all other Trolls for 20 years out of shame for his actions. At some point, he had attempted to go back home in an attempt to see Branch and make things right with his family, but it was only because of the events of The Last Trollstice that he found no one there. He didn't know at that point if Branch was alive and didn't know about the death of their Grandma. It wasn't until after the events of Trolls World Tour that he found out Branch was still alive.
Trolls Band Together[]
While living with Ronda alone, he got a fake note from Velvet saying Floyd had been captured and placed in a diamond prison. So, he drove over to Mount Rageous, and snuck into Velvet and Veneer’s dressing room, where he found Floyd locked in a diamond case. He tried to bust Floyd out, but he couldn’t open the case. Floyd stated only one thing was powerful enough to shatter diamonds: the perfect family harmony. But Velvet and Veneer were coming back, so John Dory escaped. He then spent two months searching for his brothers.
Two months later, he finds Branch at Bridget and King Gristle’s wedding. John was happy to see Branch all grown up but tried to lift him like he did when he was a baby. Also, John meets Branch's girlfriend Poppy as he takes a liking to her happy attitude and that she is a fan of BroZone, but found it annoying that she consider him the old one instead of leader of the group. John then explained to Branch what happen to Floyd and that they needed to get the rest of their brothers in order to rescue him, due to the perfect family harmony being the only thing that could save him. Although he was still upset with John for walking out on him, Branch was convinced by Poppy to help his brother save Floyd, due to him being his favorite sibling. John was delighted that Branch and Poppy are coming with him to help him reunite the rest of their brothers then save Floyd. During the journey, John attempted to reconnect with Branch, but nothing worked, although he told his youngest brother that Poppy is a keeper. Also, the group found out that Tiny Diamond unknowingly came along as he was driving Rhonda.
Through a postcard Spruce gave him, John and Branch with their friends found him. John was happy to reunite with Spruce, but he was still upset with him, although he was happy to see Branch. Also, John and Branch found out that Spruce changed his name to Bruce and had a family, much to their shock and surprise. John explain to Spruce that Floyd was in trouble, which greatly shocked him. The three brothers performed a song for Spruce's family and customers at his restaurant to prove that he was in a band. After their performances, John and the his two brothers were happy to sing together again, as they remember the fun they had when they did it back in the day.
Convinced to help his brothers save Floyd, Spruce joins John and Branch with their friends in reuniting with Clay. Through the use of Clay's old thunder pants, they found him. John and his brothers are happy to see Clay again, as he was happy to see Spruce and Branch, but was still upset with his oldest brother. They informed Clay that Floyd was in trouble and needed his help. Also, the four brothers find out that Viva is Poppy's long lost older sister. The four brothers join in on a song with the two sisters were doing. While the sisters were getting to know each other, John and his two brothers were informed by Clay that Viva doesn't like to talk about the last Trollstice as she got separated from Poppy and their father. However, John and the group discover that Viva is afraid to leave because she doesn't want to lose Poppy again. Fortunately, Clay helps them escape and joins the group in order to save Floyd.
During the drive, John rehearsed with his brothers and Poppy in order to form the perfect family harmony, but get into a fight, as he revealed why he left to his three brothers, but was unaware that his reasons for leaving was hurting Branch's feelings. However, John calmed down when Branch reminded him and their two brothers that they need to think about Floyd. Realizing that Branch was right, John agreed with his youngest brother as he backed him up, but tells them that the sooner they save Floyd the sooner they could go their separate ways again. Although, seeing Branch looking confused, John asked his youngest brother if they would live together once it was all over and mocked his idea of being a family again, which unintentionally hurt his youngest sibling feelings even more. After Branch told Tiny Diamond to pull over, John got annoyed but tried to get his youngest brother to settle down. Unfortunately, John, Spruce and Clay end up getting scolded by Branch for not only their behavior but also for treating him like a baby. Also, John and their two brothers was told by Branch that he stop being a baby the day they left him because he had to. John and their two brothers were then told by Branch that their grandmother got eaten, which greatly shocked them and realized that he grew up alone, due to the latter having no one else to take care of him.
After Branch left, John and his brothers looked at a discarded paper their youngest sibling threw as Poppy picked it up to see. When Poppy realized that the drawing was Branch's bunker and that he built his home for them, John was surprised but realized that his youngest sibling cared about him and their brothers. John then tells Poppy that he didn't know that Branch cared and waited for him alongside their brothers for so long as she tells him that he probably didn't ask him. After Poppy left to be with their youngest brother, John and his two siblings could only stand there feeling nothing but guilt for hurting Branch. Despite Clay ruining the moment when he reminds them of what Branch said about their grandmother getting eaten, John realized that his actions exposed his two youngest brothers to danger and that Poppy was right about not asking Branch or any of his siblings about anything. John also began to have second thoughts about leaving his brothers once more as he realized that they're the only family he has left in his life and truly wants to be with them again. However, John decided to wait on working things out with Bruce and Clay as they agreed that saving Floyd and reuniting with Branch so they could apologizes to him was more important then their own petty disagreement. John and his brothers go catch up with Branch and their friends in rescuing Floyd.
Unfortunately, John fell for a trap set up by Floyd's captors and got captured as well. Despite this, John and his brothers reunite with Floyd, but get into another argument. John and two of his brothers were rescued by Branch and their friends. Hearing Branch telling them that they don't need to be perfect and need to be themselves, John and their brothers have come to terms that he has grown up as they realized that he is right, as they agree to follow his lead. Through Branch's lead with Poppy and Viva, who had a change of heart and decided to help them, joining in, John with his brothers successfully did the perfect family harmony and saved Floyd. However, John and his other brothers became saddened as Floyd had no life left. John tells Floyd that he and their other brothers need him. Fortunately, their love and words helped save Floyd as he is revived, much to John and their brothers joy and relief as they embrace him.
Having worked things out with his brothers by apologizing for his behavior, John and his family planned to do a reunion concert at Spruce's place, as they intent to be together more often. Also, John meets Branch's friends, as he was in another band, much to their surprise. John and his brothers join Branch during their performances. After the performances, John joined his brothers with Poppy and Viva, who Branch invited in the band, to do a performances with.

- Ironically, even if John is the oldest of his brothers, his voice actor is two years younger than his youngest brother, Branch's voice actor, Justin Timberlake.
- He owns an armadillo van named Rhonda, but it is never told how he got her.
