John Pilgrim is the main protagonist of the 2010 flash game One Chance. He is a scientist who released an aerosol cure for cancer, only to find out it kills every living cell, not just cancer cells. He spends the game searching for an antidote.

Biography[]

Day 1[]

John is greeted by his wife, Penny, who tells him he will be late. He visits Molly in her room, then heads off to work. He picks up a newspaper along the way, detailing his cure for cancer, E48K15, which destroys harmful cells and will be released as an aerosol.

He arrives at work and is greeted by a jealous Jim, as well as other doctors who congratulate him. Annie offers to take him out for a drink to celebrate, and Ryan applauds John on his accomplishment. John can either skip work for a drink or research his cure, depending on the player's choice.

He, Annie, and many other doctors go to a nearby bar and celebrate their accomplishment.

John decides against skipping work and instead researches his cure.

Day 2[]

John visits Molly, who tells him that Penny is in the bath. Penny tells John that the phone has been ringing all morning, and John goes out to collect the paper. The news declares that the E48K15 is deadly and not only destroys harmful cells, but kills every single living cell.

He arrives at his work, where his boss complains that their funding will be pulled. He tries to enter his lab, but the door is locked. He goes to the roof, where his colleague Matthew panics about their catastrophic mistake. But before John can calm him down, Matthew jumps to his death. John and his boss are then featured on the news with the president, warning the citizens of the upcoming catastrophe.

Day 3[]

Penny tries to convince John to stay with his family, stating that his work doesn't matter anymore. However, John goes to work anyway. Upon arriving, he notices his workplace devoid of workers and his lab locked. He once again goes to the roof, where he finds his boss. His boss promises not to jump, but claims that trying to find a cure is futile and that John should leave and be with his family. John returns downstairs and meets Ryan, who gives him the keys to his lab and offers to help find a cure. John can either go back to his family or continue working, depending on the player's choice.

Day 4[]

Upon leaving his house, he is greeted by his boss, Ryan, Annie, and Bruce. His boss believes they could be on to something, but allows John to stay with his family if he wants.

Continuations and Endings[]

Ending 1[]

John does not work every day by either deciding to stay with his family, taking his daughter to the park, or skipping work with Annie. As of Day 6, he becomes gravely ill and his wife and daughter are gone. He makes one last attempt at researching the cure in his lab, though he dies while researching.

Ending 2[]

John gives up on his search for a cure. Instead, he goes to the roof of his workplace and jumps to his death.

Ending 3[]

On day 5, John enters his lab and is confronted by an enraged Jim, blaming John for the epidemic. He then runs up to John and stabs him in the throat. After a few seconds, John falls dead on the floor.

Ending 4[]

On night 4, John finds Penny dead in the bathtub, having slit her wrists. He buries her the following day. Molly questions where Penny is, so John takes her to the park, where she starts to feel ill. She dies off-screen and John buries her next to her mother's grave that night. On day 6, John returns to the park and dies alone, sitting on a bench.

Ending 5[]

Similarly to Ending 4, John finds Penny dead in the bathtub on night 4, having slit her wrists. He buries her the following day. Molly questions where Penny is, so John takes her with him to work. They both survive the day, but John is unsuccessful in finding a cure and gives up on his search. On day 6, he instead takes her to the park, where they sit on a bench and die together.

Ending 6[]

Ending 6 can only be achieved if John abandons every offer to skip work with Annie or spend time with his family. On night 4, he discovers Penny dead in the bathtub, having taken her own life. He buries her on Day 5. The same day, Molly asks where Penny is, prompting John to take her with him to work. They both survive the day, but John is unsuccessful in finding a cure. On day 6, he and Molly fall gravely ill, but he refuses to give up and once again takes her to his work. This time, he succeeds in finding a cure and administers it to himself and his daughter. The two then go to the park and sit on a bench together, presumably the last two humans alive.

If the player leaves the game and re-enters, they will be greeted with the same park setting that the game ended with. However, the grass and tree color will be changed from a dying brown to a healthy green, indicating John may have spread his cure and possibly saved other people as well.
