Hero Overview

The healthy human mind doesn't wake up in the morning thinking this is its last day on earth. But I think that's a luxury, not a curse. To know you're close to the end is a kind of freedom. Good time to take... inventory. Outgunned. Outnumbered. Out of our minds. On a suicide mission. But the sand and rocks here stained with thousands of years of warfare... they will remember us. For this. Because out of all our vast array of nightmares this is the one we choose for ourselves. We go forward like a breath exhaled from the earth. With vigor in our hearts and one goal in sight: We. Will. Kill him.
~ Price speech in the Modern Warfare 2 mission "Just Like Old Times".
Ah, no, no, no, no, no! Soap! No! No! No! Soap! {...} Get off me!... I'm sorry.
~ Price's final words to Soap after he dies.
Prisoner #627. I'm coming for you, Makarov.
~ Captain Price to Makarov in the opening cutscene of "Dust to Dust".

Captain John Price is the main protagonist of the Call of Duty franchise's original Modern Warfare sub-series.

He is a British SAS captain/sniper of Bravo Team, field commander of Task Force 141, and the mentor of John "Soap" MacTavish. Originally the protege of Captain MacMillan, he later became captain of the SAS Bravo Team and participated in numerous operations. He played a pivotal role in stopping the Russian Ultranationalists and the Four Horsemen: Imran Zakhaev, Victor Zakhaev, Khaled Al-Asad, and his arch-nemesis Vladimir Makarov, from destroying the west during the Second Russian Civil War and World War III.

He was voiced by Billy Murray in the series, who also portrayed Johnny Allen in EastEnders. In Find Makarov and Find Makarov: Operation Kingfish, he was portrayed by David Kinsman. In Call of Duty: Mobile, he is voiced by Barry Sloane, who voices the reboot iteration of the character.

Biography[]

Background[]

Price was born in January 11th, 1953[1] in the UK. When he was 16 or older he joined the SAS's 22nd Regiment.

He would become the protégé of his senior officer MacMillan and became the regiment's designated sharpshooter.

SAS[]

Lieutenant[]

I was just a 'Leftenant' back then...doing some wetwork. Chernobyl. Christmas for the bad guys. Even a decade later, a lot of 'em still used it to get their hands on nuclear material...a lot of 'em, including one Imran Zakhaev.
~ Captain Price telling his story of Zakhaev's attempted assassination.

In 1996, as a Lieutenant, he and MacMillan were assigned to Alpha Team with orders to assassinate Russian Ultranationalist leader Imran Zakhaev, traveling across Pripyat to reach the abandoned Polissya Hotel where they could oversee the meet where Zakhaev was making a deal with former Red Army soldiers who wanted to join his Ultranationalists in hopes of reviving the Soviet Union after its dissolution 5 years earlier.

Despite the area around Pripyat and in the town itself still heavily contaminated with radiation from the Chernobyl Disaster 10 years prior in 1986, when Ukraine was still the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Price and MacMillan slipped past the patrols and into town to set up their sniper nest. Although Price shot Zakhaev and thought to have killed him, he only shot and removed his left arm and Zakhaev got away. Price was forced to carry and protect MacMillan after the latter's legs were injured from a crashing Mil Mi-28 Havoc attack helicopter, and the two managed to hold out until rescue arrived. Price would think that he killed Zakhaev and continued his services with the 22nd SAS.

Captain[]

Right… What the hell kind of name is Soap, eh? How'd a muppet like you pass Selection?
~ Captain Price to Soap, his famous quote.

Sometime before the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Price was promoted to Captain. He recruited and trained Sergeant "Soap" MacTavish along with Gaz, before they were deployed to a ship containing a nuclear warhead at the Bering Strait. At the end of the mission, Price saves Soap from falling into the ocean and to his death when the ship is sunk by MiGs and they barely make it aboard their Sea Knight before the ship capsized. Then his team is deployed to Russia to save their Loyalist informant going by the codename of "Nikolai" and are assisted by the Loyalist leader Sergeant Kamarov and his men, considering that the Russian Civil War between the Western-backed Loyalists and the Ultranationalists is of grave concern because of the prize on the line for the winner: Russia's arsenal of 15,000 active nuclear weapons, in service or stockpiled in reserve.

A few missions later, shortly after learning of the events in the Middle East when Khaled Al-Asad had his forces commit suicide with detonating a nuke in their capital city to kill the U.S. forces invading it, Price and his team go to the safehouse of Al-Asad in Azerbaijan to capture him after being informed of its location by Nikolai from his own safehouse in Hamburg, Germany. Price interrogates Al-Asad on who gave him the bomb that killed all those U.S. troops, but is given his phone by Gaz. After learning that Imran Zakhaev is still alive from the phone call and is Al-Asad's supplier of the nuke, Al-Asad is executed by a furious Price. The captain then goes on to explain his past encounter with Zakhaev back in Pripyat 15 years earlier, and how he is connected to recent events. After being forced to fight their way past the Ultranationalists to reach an escape helicopter loaded with U.S. Force Reconnaissance Marines led by Staff Sergeant Griggs, who was not part of the force slaughtered by the nuke back in Al-Asad's country, Price's team is then deployed to capture Zakhaev's son, Victor Zakhaev.

But the mission fails when he commits suicide to avoid selling out his father, and Imran then launches Russian nuclear missiles as revenge after his Ultranationalists capture a Russian nuclear missile silo launch facility and launch two of the RT-2UTTH Topol-M ICBMs there against the United States Eastern Seaboard, with the other four being launched soon after for other Western targets. Price and the team then work on stopping the missiles and succeed in deactivating them before they could detonate on Western soil, uploading the abort codes provided by the Loyalists and the Russian Ministry of Defense to self-destruct the missiles in flight before the warheads could reach their intended targets.

After stopping the missiles, Price and his team race to leave the area, but are stopped when a bridge is destroyed by an Ultranationalist Mil Mi-24 Hind. When SSgt. Griggs and Gaz are killed, Price gives Soap his M1911 to kill Zakhaev and his bodyguards when they are distracted by their Hind being destroyed by a Loyalist Havoc. Price and Soap are extracted to a hospital in Russia after said action when Kamarov and his forces arrive in Mil Mi-8 Hip transport helicopters and find them still alive.

Task Force 141[]

Operation: Kingfish[]

Following Zakhaev's death, Price and Soap were reassigned to Task Force 141 under the leadership of General Shepherd, where the two met British soldiers Simon "Ghost" Riley and Gary "Roach" Anderson. The task force was assigned to eliminate Vladimir Makarov, a member of the Ultranationalist who established himself as the new leader after Zakhaev's death and was committing acts of terrorism. In 2013, Task Force 141 were assigned to eliminate Makarov in Ukraine, where Price, Soap, and Roach worked with Delta Force operators Sandman and Derek "Frost" Westbrook. During the raid to find Vladimir, the team was ambushed by Ultranationalist forces, and Captain Price covered his allies as they escaped. Price was then captured by the Ultranationalists and sentenced to the Gulag and given the prisoner code "627".

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]

Have to trust someone to be betrayed. I never did.
~ Captain Price to Soap on Shepherd's betrayal.

Price returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 having been broken out of a Russian gulag by now Captain "Soap" MacTavish and Task Force 141, as the unit gathered intel that Makarov's greatest enemy was a prisoner in the gulag. After learning that the world has broken into a war by the Russians after a massacre caused by Ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov that he framed the USA for supporting, Price launches an SLBM to generate an EMP at Washington, D.C., which ends up saving Sgt. Foley, Cpl. Dunn, Pvt. Ramirez, and other Rangers and allows them to take back the White House from the Russian army, while other U.S. forces reclaim the rest of Washington, D.C., thus beginning their efforts to push the Russians off U.S. soil.

Following his mission, Price and Soap travel to Afghanistan to find intel on Makarov, as Ghost and Roach are sent to eliminate Makarov at his safe house on the Russian-Georgian border. After learning that General Shepherd betrayed Task Force 141, Price and Soap engage in one objective, kill Shepherd. To do that, Price contacts Makarov and warns him of the threat Shepherd poses to him now, and reminds him of the saying "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Reluctantly, Makarov gives in and tells Price that Shepherd is hiding in Site Hotel Bravo in Afghanistan before going into hiding.

John Price: Makarov...you ever hear the old saying...the enemy of my enemy is my friend?
Vladimir Makarov: Price, one day you're going to find that cuts both ways. Shepherd is using Site Hotel Bravo. You know where it is. I'll see you in hell.
John Price: Looking forward to it. Give my regards to Zakhaev if you get there first.
~ Makarov saves his own neck, for now, by helping Price and Soap seek vengeance.

In the mission Endgame, Price shoots down Shepherd's MH-53 Pave Low and before Shepherd attempts to execute Soap, he and Price gets into a fist fight and Price is overpowered. After Shepherd is killed, Price and Nikolai extracts Soap while on the run for killing Shepherd and Task Force 141 is then disavowed.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]

This is for Soap.
~ Captain Price to Yuri before fighting Makarov's men.

Price and Soap are now disavowed for the murder of General Shepherd, being labeled war criminals and wanted by INTERPOL. Price and Nikolai get the fatally wounded Soap to a safehouse that is under attack by Vladimir Makarov's Inner Circle. 2 months after Soap's recovery from his wounds, Price, Soap, Nikolai, and a new ally called Yuri are still focusing on Task Force 141's main mission, take down Vladimir Makarov. After Soap's death, Yuri reveals that he knew Makarov, but betrayed him because of the massacre at Zakhaev International Airport, making it hard for Price to trust him.

During the Stronghold mission, he and Yuri infiltrated the old castle near Prague that used to be used by Imran Zakhaev to retrieve intel on Makarov. He learns that Makarov is sending his men to Berlin to capture Russian President Boris Vorshevsky's daughter, Alena, to use her as a bargaining chip to get Vorshevsky to cough up the Russian nuclear launch codes. During the mission Down the Rabbit Hole, Price and Delta Force attempt to rescue Vorshevsky and his daughter from Makarov's men and succeeded, but with the loss of Team Metal and the wounding of Yuri.

After the end of World War III, while Vorshevsky and the U.S. President formally call an end to the conflict and for peace to reign between the forces of NATO and the Ultranationalist-controlled Russian Federation, Price and Yuri go to Hotel Oasis in the Arabian Peninsula to finally kill Makarov, who had gone into hiding after his plans failed and he was now a wanted man by both nuclear superpowers in the USA and Russia, possibly heading for the death sentence. After a Little Bird destroys the upper area of the hotel, badly wounding Yuri, Price continues up to the roof to prevent Makarov getting away again. When he was just about to be killed by Makarov, Yuri shoots Makarov in the shoulder, which gets Yuri killed, but buys Price enough time to restrain Makarov and wrap a cable around his neck and break down through the glass roof, causing Makarov to be hung and cut by shards of glass. After Makarov's death, Price survives the fall and smokes a cigar under Makarov's dead body as the sound of emergency vehicles are heard approaching.

It's unknown what happened to Price afterward, but it can be assumed that he either got arrested, rescued, or maybe even got promoted once it was discovered that Makarov was finally dead and the world was safe from any further threats from any of the self-proclaimed Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4[]

In Black Ops 4, he appears as a playable skin in the Blackout mode if the player pre-ordered Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Mobile[]

Captain Price is a playable skin in Call of Duty: Mobile and appears as a featured character in the Mobile comics.

Personality[]

John is a wrathful, short-tempered, grumpy, intimidating and cynical yet benevolent and honourable military leader who saved many people during the events of World War 3 and Makarov's empire. He is very aggressive and ruthless towards his enemies.

He is also an extremely intelligent soldier. He can learn all military risk tests and is great at developing new plans in war, such as stopping the Russian's invasion in Washington, D.C. by using a missile to knock out all electrical power in the area.

Despite his grumpy and intimidating behavior, Price is still very compassionate and loyal towards the fellow soldiers of his group, especially Soap, acting like a father figure to him. After Soap's death, Price became bitter and rageful, but remained determined to kill Makarov for his actions. He also became distrustful of Yuri but continued to work with him, as the two had a common goal to stop the Russian Ultranationalist leader. Despite his distrust for Yuri for being Makarov's former subordinate, Price does care for him when he was injured.

I was just a 'Leftenant' back then, doing some wet work. Chernobyl, Christmas for the bad guys. Even a decade later a lot of them still used it to get their hands on nuclear material. A lot of them, including one Imran Zakhaev. Of course we couldn't just let that happen, cash for spent fuel rods? That's one hell of a recipe for destruction. It was the first time our government authorized an assassination order since the second World War. I was under the command of Captain MacMillan.
~ Captain Price recalling his past mission with MacMillan.
Soap.
~ Price to Soap in "The Gulag".
Ghost, come in! This is Price! We're under attack by Shepherd's men in the boneyard! Soap, hold the left flank! Do not trust Shepherd! I say again, do not trust Shepherd! Soap, get down!

This is for the record. History is written by the victor. History is filled with liars. If he lives, and we die, his truth becomes written - and ours is lost. Shepherd will be a hero, 'cause all you need to change the world is one good lie and a river of blood. He's about to complete the greatest trick a liar ever played on history. His truth will be the truth. But only if he lives, and we die.
~ Captain Price in the opening cutscene of "Endgame".
I thought I told you this was a one-way trip!
~ Captain Price to Nikolai.

Your world as you knew it is gone. How far would you go to bring it back? Shepherd created a war, but only we knew the truth.
~ Captain Price in the opening of Modern Warfare 3.
They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? [...] Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil—that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. [...] The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match.
~ Price in the cutscene of "Turbulence".
Soap TRUSTED you. I thought I could too. So WHY IN BLOODY HELL, DOES MAKAROV KNOW YOU?!!
~ Captain Price to Yuri.
There's a clocktower in Hereford where the names of the dead are inscribed. We try to honor their deeds, even as their faces fade from our memory. Those memories are all that's left, when the bastards have taken everything else.
~ Price in the cutscene of "Stronghold".
There's a simplicity to war. Attacking is the only secret. Dare—and the world yields. How quickly they forget that all it takes to change the course of history...is the will of a single man.
~ Captain Price in the opening cutscene of "Dust to Dust".
John Price: My war ends with you.
Vladimir Makarov: Like it ended for Captain MacTavish? Tell me, Price. How long did it take him to die? I've destroyed your world piece by piece. It's only a matter of time until I find you.
John Price: You won't have to look far...

Trivia[]

  • His favorite brand of cigars are Villa Clara's.
  • He is rarely seen not wearing a hat on his head, only exception is "Crew Expendable".
    • In Modern Warfare 2 Remastered, the developers added his hat falling off during his fight with Shepherd, revealing his hair and a bald spot on the top of his head.
  • In the pre-alpha of the mission "F.N.G.", he was voiced by Michael Gough, who previously voiced Price in Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2. It was later scrapped as Billy Murray was chosen for the role.
  • His signature weapon through all three games is the M4A1.
    • Strangely, on his MW3 character card for Mountain Dew, it states that his weapon is the CM901 and MSR, weapons he never uses in the campaign.
  • He was born on January 11th, 1953 in Great Britain, U.K.[2]
  • In Infinite Warfare, some of the Settlement Defense Soldiers can heard saying "What's the status of Prisoner 627" in radio chatter, referencing Price and his alias in Modern Warfare 2.
  • His appearance in Blackout makes him the first non-Treyarch character in appear in one of their Call of Duty games.
  • In the cut post-credits scene of Modern Warfare, Price would have seemingly succumbed to his wounds while a shadowy figured watched from afar.
  • There are fan theories that Captain Price is the grandson of the original Price from Call of Duty. Infinity Ward's character designer Sami Onur stated in an interview that he is the grandson of Price from the first game's entry, but it hasn't been officially confirmed nor considered canon. [3]
