John Routledge, usually called Big John is the overarching protagonist of Netflix TV Show, Outer Banks.
He is the father of John B and the former friend and colleague of Ward Cameron who seriously wounded and apparently killed him while searching for the Royal Merchant, but left the word "Redfield" on a compass, which served as an heirloom for his son so that he could continue the mission. He is absent for the first two seasons, but appears in the finale of the second, only to return as a major character in the third.
He is played by Charles Halford.

Big John was looking for the Royal Merchant with Ward Cameron, before leaving he had argued with his son. During the journey there was an argument that led Ward to apparently kill Big John. But he survived and took refuge on an isolated island.
