Joi is the deuteragonist of the film Blade Runner 2049. She is an artificially intelligent hologram who serves as K's domestic partner. She would offer K moral support and accompanies him on his quest to find the missing Replicant daughter.
She is portrayed by Ana de Armas who also portrayed Marta Cabrera in Knives Out and Paloma in No Time To Die.
Biography[]
Origins[]
Joi was a brand of a company called DiJi which was designed by Wallace Corporation and was released in 2029. She was amongst the countless updated Joi products from 2037 being sold and was eventually at some point in the early 2040's bought and owned by the Blade Runner K where she functioned as his domestic partner of whom he cared for deeply.
Blade Runner 2049[]
For years, her AI would evolve and adapt based on K's personality traits and habits and often filled in the void of K's loneliness and depression. Her affection (despite seemingly being artificial) was reciprocated as K viewed her as his lover of whom he deeply loved. In 2049, K would become a fugitive due to his refusal of "retiring" a birthed replicant child and hence, sought out to find the child with Joi accompanying and aiding him. Feeling guilty for her inability to have intercourse with K, she hires a prostitute named Marriette to act as a surrogate for her as they engage in a threesome. In the meantime, a replicant working directly for Wallace Corporation named Luv pursues them in order to locate and retire the child after Marriette places a tracker on K.
Before setting out to the ruins of old Las Vegas, K downloads Joi into a mobile emanator that he carries with him. However, when K finds Rick Deckard and discovers his identity as the replicant child's father as well as the mother's identity, Luv finds them and during the scuffle, Joi's emanator is knocked over, summoning her by accident. Luv, wanting to break K's spirit, realizes how much Joi means to K and thus smashes the mobile emanator, effectively killing Joi before taking Deckard with her. Sometime later, K sadly wanders on the outskirts of Los Angeles where an interactive advertisement of a different Joi calls out to him before he leaves to rescue Deckard. K manages to track down and kill Luv, one could interpret this as K taking revenge for Luv killing Joi. However, K was stabbed by Luv during their fight and later presumably succumbed to his wounds.
Personality[]
Joi is kind, gentle, compassionate, empathic and offers K moral support as he battles with his loneliness and depression. Due to K's depressed and lonely state, she portrays herself as the perfect domestic partner for him of whom she cared and loved deeply. However, she is fully aware of the limitations of her AI which makes her insecure such as her inability to have direct intercourse with K due to being a hologram, going so far as to hire a prostitute to act as a surrogate for her to have intercourse with K.
Due to her AI and its abilities, she is resourceful and helpful as she aids K in locating the missing replicant daughter, proving herself to be useful outside of being his domestic partner. Joi is also selfless as she puts K's well-being over hers due to her intense love for him, it is worth noting that K loved her so much that one of the two times he ever showed emotion was when Joi is killed by Luv, tearing up and almost breaking down as a result.
It is also worth noting that it is left ambiguous to whether her feelings for K are artificial or genuine since her AI adapts and learns through K's personality and traits.

Trivia[]
