~ Jon Arryn's last words. |
“ | You told me to put the tears in Jon's wine, and I did. For Robert, and for us! And I wrote Catelyn and told her the Lannisters had killed my lord husband, just as you said. | „ |
~ Lysa Arryn confessing to Petyr Baelish her responsibility of poisoning Jon Arryn as well as her framing of the Lannisters for the crime. |
Lord Jon Arryn is a major posthumous character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaption Game of Thrones. He was the Lord of the Eyrie, Defender of the Vale, and Warden of the East. He was also the head of House Arryn. Jon Arryn is the husband of Lady Lysa Arryn and the father of his only surviving child Robert "Sweetrobin" Arryn. He was also the foster father of Lord Eddard Stark and King Robert I Baratheon.
During King Robert's reign, Jon Arryn served as his first and original Hand of the King until his unexpected death in 298 AC, in which he was secretly poisoned by his own wife Lysa under the orders of Lord Petyr Baelish, who convinced her to kill Jon to prevent him from sending their son Robert to Dragonstone, where he was meant to serve as Stannis Baratheon's ward. Afterwards, Lysa fled King's Landing with most of her husband's household for the Eyrie, partly due to King Robert's attempt to have Robert Arryn fostered with Tywin Lannister at Casterly Rock.
Jon Arryn's death, as well as Lysa's framing of the Lannisters for it, had immense consequences upon most of the continent of Westeros as it serves as one of the main events that would result in a downward spiral that ultimately led to the multi-theater civil war known as the War of the Five Kings.
Jon was portrayed by John Standing but only as a corpse in the first season of the TV series.
Appearance[]
Jon Arryn is a broad-shouldered man. By the time of Robert's Rebellion and his marriage to Lysa Arryn, he had already lost half of his teeth. He constantly has bad breath, which Lysa hates. In his younger days, Jon resembles the handsome Ser Harrold Hardyng, having blue eyes, blond-colored hair, and an aquiline nose.
Personality[]
“ | The tears of Lys, they call it. A rare and costly thing, clear and sweet as water, and it leaves no trace. I begged Lord Arryn to use a taster, in this very room I begged him, but he would not hear of it. Only one who was less than a man would even think of such a thing, he told me. | „ |
~ Varys telling Ned Stark how he tried to prevent Jon's murder. |
Jon Arryn is remembered as prudent, calm, and wise, as well as kind-hearted and trustworthy. While he is loving and caring towards Robert Baratheon and Lord Eddard Stark from their youth to adulthood, he does not have a friendly relationship with Robert's younger brother, Lord Stannis Baratheon, though the two acted cordial toward each other, and Stannis helped him with the realm's administration in the small council.
Quotes[]
“ | Tyrion: And what was Lord Arryn plotting? Pycelle: He knew. About ... about ... Tyrion: [quickly snaps to avoid Pycelle talking about it in front of Shagga and Timett] I know what he knew about. Pycelle: He was sending his wife back to the Eyrie, and his son to be fostered on Dragonstone ... he meant to act ... Tyrion: So you poisoned him first. Pycelle: No. Tyrion: Tsk. I saw the tears of Lys among your potions. And you sent away Lord Arryn's own maester and tended him yourself, so you could make certain that he died. Pycelle: A falsehood! |
