Jonathan is a supporting character from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. He is voiced by James Sie in the English version of the game.
Biography[]
Jonathan was one of the members of Rat Patrol Team 01 involved in the events of Liquid Ocelot's Insurrection in 2014. An American soldier of Korean descent, he handles the units heavy weapons. His hair was shaved in such a way, that when viewed from behind it appeared as an exclamation point. Easy going by nature, he could fall asleep anywhere, even in the middle of a battlefield. According to Meryl Silverburgh, he was wary of people sneaking up on him, as she warned Solid Snake not to approach him from behind.
Jonathan is first seen when he and Ed flank Solid Snake after he overpowered and disarmed Johnny Sasaki of his XM8 carbine rifle and turned it against him while Meryl confronted him head-on with her Desert Eagle. Only when Snake recognized the FOXHOUND patch on Meryl's suit did she take off her balaclava and realize it was the same person she saw on Shadow Moses 9 years earlier. When Ed and Jonathan then come out from cover and keep their weapons trained on Snake, Meryl has them stand down since she knew the hostile that overpowered Akiba. Later, when their position is compromised and FROGs are on their way to assault them, Jonathan works with his team to evacuate to the Advent Palace's parking garage to escape, using the XM320 grenade launcher on his XM8 to help cover their withdrawal. Once down there, it looks initially that the coast is clear, but just as Jonathan signals to Meryl, he takes a 5.7x28mm round through his shoulder as three FROGs leap out from their hiding places. However, using their nanomachines to coordinate their next move, Meryl, Ed, and Jonathan pop all three FROGs at the same time simultaneously. After he recovers, Jonathan personally empties his entire XM8 magazine of 5.56x45mm NATO rounds into the FROG that shot him, even as the FROG whimpers and groans as Jonathan keeps putting rounds into her until he is certain she's dead before her body is immolated by her nanomachines spontaneously combusting, reducing it to charred ashes, leaving Snake stunned by what he just saw.
When they reencounter Snake at the Praying Mantis PMC main compound, as they quietly sneak their way towards Liquid Ocelot, Liquid activates his first attempt to take over the Sons of the Patriots (SOP) System using Liquid's own DNA. As the Praying Mantis troopers collapse into emotional fits, not even Rat Patrol is immune, as Jonathan himself collapses into hysterical screaming, with Akiba unable to help them, except dragging them out of there since he was unaffected.
After the events in the Middle East, once Jonathan, Ed, and Meryl recover, they send their report to ARSOC and the POTUS, who realizes the threat Liquid poses and assigns a joint U.S. Army-Marine Corps task force to Rat Patrol to bring Liquid in. After encountering Snake again after saving him from a Raven Sword PMC checkpoint that would have exposed him, Rat Patrol are waiting to ambush Liquid when he tries to make his getaway on the Volta River, surrounding him by land, sea, and air with their soldiers and Marines. Unfazed by being surrounded by U.S. forces, Liquid prepares to make his move. Sensing trouble, Meryl orders everyone to take aim, and Jonathan brings his XM8 w/ XM320 to bear in preparation, but just as Meryl gives the order to open fire, Liquid takes over SOP and disables their weapons. After then forcing Rat Patrol's supporting helicopters to crash by disabling their systems, Liquid has one of his FROGs fire on Rat Patrol with their FN P90, and Jonathan and Ed take numerous 5.7x28mm bullet wounds in the process, still caught off-guard by their disabled weapons. After Liquid then causes them and the other U.S. forces to suffer emotional breakdowns like what happened back in the Middle East, Liquid has his FROGs begin slaughtering the helpless U.S. soldiers and Marines piecemeal, before using his own gunboat's main cannons to rock Rat Patrol's PT boat so badly that both Jonathan and Ed are flung overboard before Meryl and Akiba join them. Both Jonathan and Ed make it to shore, but their wounds appear to be mortal, as they exchange their apparent last words with each other as they struggle to breathe.

However, after Meryl, Johnny, Snake, Hal "Otacon" Emmerich, Drebin 893, Mei Ling, and Sunny are able to stop Liquid and destroy the Patriot AIs, saving modern civilization and ending the war economy for good, Jonathan and Ed are revealed to have survived their wounds, recovered, and attend Meryl and Johnny's wedding, with Jonathan serving as Johnny's best man for the ceremony. After Drebin arrives to offer his gifts to the newlyweds, Jonathan joins everyone in the reception afterwards.
