| “ | Jonathan... you're a really great brother, you know that? I know how much you gave up by saying yes to coming here. Your whole life's in Metropolis. Your girlfriend's there. Your entire identity is there, but you said yes to coming here anyway 'cause you wanted to help your brother | „ |
| ~ Lois to Jon about himself. |
Jonathan "Jon" Kent II is one of the two deuteragonists (alognside Jordan Kent) of Superman & Lois. He is the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane and the brother of Jordan Kent.
Unlike his brother, Jonathan did not inherit his father's powers and feels slightly jealous of Jordan, who can do things he can't.
He was portrayed by Jordan Elsass in the first two seasons before being recast by Michael Bishop for the third season. Brady Droulis portrayed ihim at age seven.
History[]
Birth[]
Jonathan Kent II was born in 2006 shortly after his brother, Jordan. He was named after his adoptive paternal grandfather. When they were growing up, Clark and Lois found it easy raising Jonathan, who was always outgoing and athletic. However, they struggled with Jordan, who was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder as a teenager.
When Jon broke a rope by throwing a football, Clark took him to the fortress to see if he inherited Kryptonian powers. However, the Fortress' test came back negative.
For most of his life, Jon lived in Metropolis with his family, where he became a starring quarterback for the football team. However, every once in a while, Jon and his family would visit their grandmother in Smallville. During a trip on summer vacation, Jordan and Jon met Sarah Cushing, the daughter of Lana Lang.
After he began playing football, Jon began dating a girl, Eliza and became the quarterback for his team.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Human-Kryptonian Hybrid Physiology: Jonathan's physiology is that of a human-Kryptonian hybrid, meaning his body has the potential for the same superhuman abilities as any full-blooded Kryptonian when exposed to the rays of a yellow sun. However, his powers remained dormant for much of his life. They only surfaced during a moment of intense grief over his father's death, which triggered his Kryptonian genes. Unlike his brother Jordan, who developed his abilities gradually over time, Jonathan's powers fully manifested all at once. This might be because Jonathan had already reached a peak level of human strength and fitness, allowing him to handle and control his newfound powers more effectively. As a result, Jonathan seems to have a greater capacity to harness and adapt to his powers, making them notably stronger and more refined than Jordan’s.
- Solar Energy Absorption: Jonathan's body is engineered to harness and use energy from a yellow sun, which fuels all of his powers. His cells function as energy reservoirs, enabling him to metabolize this solar energy. However, being only half-Kryptonian means he can absorb and utilize less solar energy compared to a full Kryptonian like his father. This reduced ability might have caused the late emergence of his powers, much like his brother Jordan's situation. Living a comfortable life for sixteen years with peak human abilities kept Jonathan continuously content, which may have hindered his powers from experiencing the stress needed to increase the solar energy within him. Jordan observed that Jonathan's heart rate never spikes, and after their father's death, the emotional impact on Jon catalyzed the awakening of his Kryptonian abilities, allowing him to reach his full potential.
- Superhuman Strength: After fully awakening his Kryptonian powers, Jonathan described himself as being vastly stronger, stating he felt "a thousand times stronger." He quickly showcased remarkable strength by single-handedly lifting a giant wooden beam from his father's truck and punching through a massive iceberg while training with Clark in the Arctic. While acting as a vigilante, Jon exhibited even greater power by catching a falling car mid-air and stopping a truck from tipping over a bridge. In one notable instance, he halted a burning truck just in time to keep it from crashing into Brit & Dunn's Quick Mart.
- Superhuman Durability: Jonathan has impressive durability, which makes him resistant to damage. For example, during training in the Arctic, he places his hand on an iceberg and flies through it without getting hurt. He lands smoothly and even withstands attacks from Hacksaw Kronick's X-Kryptonite flamethrowers without injury. When Natalie's suit strikes him with a missile to the chest, he briefly loses consciousness but survives, suggesting he might be bulletproof. Even when the exosuit tries to strangle him, he stays awake long enough for him and his brother to destroy it. He also faces Luthor, who fires a red sun cannon at Jonathan, sending him crashing into Luthor's old hotel room with hardly a scratch.
- Superhuman Speed: Jonathan possesses extraordinary speed that enables him to move faster than the human eye can follow. After he started flying and running at high speeds, he proved capable of traveling great distances rapidly, such as flying from Smallville to Metropolis in merely a few minutes. Although he may not match his father's speed, Jonathan is still incredibly fast, able to react to and intercept a missile fired from Natalie's suit.
- Superhuman Stamina: Because of Jonathan's half-alien side, he can fly, run, and use a lot of energy without getting tired. However, lengthy and intense battles can wear him out a bit and even make him hungry. After completing several missions in Chicago, Toronto, San Juan, and Gastonia throughout the morning, he feels a strong hunger on his flight home and ends up eating two full plates at Vicky Mace to refuel his body.
- Flight: Jonathan discovered he could fly when his powers reached full potential. Impressively, he gained mastery over his flight in only a few hours, effortlessly traveling between different cities. After the return of his father, Jon worked on honing his flying abilities further, ultimately achieving a proficiency that allowed him to keep pace with Clark during their training sessions.
- X-Ray Vision: Jonathan's x-ray vision appeared immediately after his powers activated. He quickly learned to control it, utilizing this ability during his first mission to see through barriers and find Gretchen, who was trapped and surrounded by flames. This capability became an essential asset for him in perilous situations.
- Heat Vision: Jonathan first acquired heat vision through X-Kryptonite but had difficulty controlling it. Nevertheless, after his inherent Kryptonian powers fully emerged, he mastered this ability. He showcased this during a confrontation with Natalie’s remote-controlled exo-suit, where he and Jordan used their heat vision in tandem to melt the suit's armor. Subsequently, Jon employed his heat vision once more to strike Doomsday, successfully drawing the creature's focus away from Smallville and safeguarding the town.
- Superhuman Smell: Jonathan has an extraordinary sense of smell that enables him to perceive aromas with remarkable intensity and clarity. For instance, when he cut into an apple, the fragrance was so rich and delightful that it was far more pronounced to him than it would be for an average person. This heightened olfactory ability allows him to notice even faint scents with great distinctiveness.
- Superhuman Hearing: Jonathan's advanced hearing was the first of his Kryptonian abilities to emerge when his powers developed. While soaring through the air with Clark, he was able to hear the quick rhythm of his father's heartbeat. Even though he adapted to this ability rather swiftly, he still finds it challenging to use it as accurately as his brother Jordan does, having a hard time picking out distant sounds. Nevertheless, Jon has shown his hearing's impressive range, such as being able to hear people screaming from as far away as Chicago during one of his crime-fighting missions.
- Superhuman Breath: Jonathan acquired the power of superhuman breath, which includes the capability to exhale frigid air. He showcased this skill on his initial mission by flying into a flaming mall and using his ice breath to put out sections of the blaze. Although this was merely a temporary fix, it illustrated his ability to summon and utilize this power during critical situations.
- Accelerated Healing Factor: Jonathan's improved metabolism provides him with a faster healing ability, enabling him to mend injuries significantly quicker than a typical human. For minor injuries, he can recover nearly instantly, much like his father. Notably, it's possible that Jonathan exhibited a slight form of this ability prior to fully developing his Kryptonian powers, as he managed to heal a broken arm at an unusually rapid rate on two different occasions.
Abilities[]
- Peak of Human Physical Condition: Before manifesting his powers, Jonathan is in peak physical condition, making him a naturally gifted athlete and physical powerhouse. From a young age, he displayed remarkable talent, once tearing through a rope by hitting it with a football. Before moving to Smallville, he was on track to become the first freshman starting quarterback for his varsity team at one of the nation’s most competitive high schools—a testament to his skill and athleticism. His performance was so impressive that his parents wondered if he might have unknowingly inherited latent Kryptonian traits. Jonathan has a well-muscled build, quick reflexes, and impressive speed. He demonstrated this when he sprinted to stop Jordan from hitting Jimmy Cutter and shielded his brother when metal poles fell on them, suffering only a mild concussion. He also showed his strength by briefly overpowering Sean and his friends and easily lifting and swinging a kinetic hammer. Known as a "star quarterback," Jon’s conditioning helps him recover quickly from injuries, such as when he healed without complaint after breaking his arm twice in a year or when bruises from a beating faded within a week. His endurance and lung capacity allow him to function under harsh conditions, such as holding his breath through a smoke-filled warehouse to retrieve his truck during a raid. Jonathan also has exceptional agility, performing backflips effortlessly when dancing through a crowd. These qualities, along with his resilience and mental toughness, make him an outstanding athlete and warrior even without relying solely on his Kryptonian powers.
- Skilled Driver: Before getting a license, Jon has shown to be able to ride a truck skillfully to save his father being subdued.
- Expert Marksmanship: Jon was given lessons by his grandfather and John Irons in how to wield firearms against threat and opponents.
- Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combat: Over time, Jonathan has become an expert in hand-to-hand combat. In the beginning, he managed to hold his ground against Sean but eventually got overpowered by a group at a bonfire. Later, he showed some decent fighting skills when he confronted Timmy, hitting him repeatedly until he accidentally struck his father. As Jonathan trained more, especially with Jordan, he improved his fighting style by adding boxing techniques. He learned defensive moves like slipping, bobbing, and weaving, along with offensive punches such as hooks and crosses, all while keeping a strong stance. His training proved useful in real-life situations. For instance, during a warehouse raid with Jordan and Natalie, Jon faced a thug and knocked him out with one powerful punch. After fully awakening his powers, Jonathan practiced extensively in simulations at the Fortress of Solitude, sharpening his abilities enough to help his brother fight against a formidable enemy like Doomsday.
- Indomitable Will: Jonathan has an unbreakable spirit and a deep sense of duty. Even without powers at first, he was always ready to help when the situation called for it. Knowing that Jordan couldn't be seen using his super strength, Jon stepped in to shield him, taking a punch meant for a bully, which resulted in a broken hand and time spent in a cast. His wish to protect others motivated him to learn from John Henry how to use advanced weapons so he could defend himself and those he cares about. In risky moments, Jonathan displayed remarkable bravery, confronting people with powers similar to Kryptonians directly. When Jordan was brainwashed, Jonathan attempted to rescue him using a sonic weapon. Even after the device was destroyed and Jordan grabbed him by the throat, Jonathan relied on their strong bond to reach out to his brother, ultimately helping him break free from the mind control and saving them both. Jonathan's strong sense of right and wrong also led him to take responsibility for Candice when she was caught selling X-Kryptonite, believing her life shouldn't be ruined over her mistake. However, this choice weighed heavily on him; he broke down in tears, overwhelmed by fears of being expelled from school, strained relationships with his parents, and the potential loss of the life he'd built in Smallville. Despite these challenges, Jonathan's determination and commitment to doing what's right continue to shape who he is.
