Private First Class Joseph Allen (1994 - 12/8/2016), also known as Alexei Borodin (Russian Алексей Бородин) is a playable character in the 2009 video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and a posthumous character in the 2011 sequel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Allen is a United States Army Ranger who is later assigned to the CIA and Task Force 141 by General Shepherd. Though he only appears in act one of the campaign, his actions spark World War III due to Vladimir Makarov having him take the fall for the airport massacre.
He was voiced by Troy Baker, who also voiced Terrance Brooks in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Jack Mitchell in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Joseph Allen was born in 1994 in Albany, New York, and later joined the United States Army Rangers at an unknown time (possibly around 2014 or 2015). Allen reached the rank of private first class, becoming a member of Hunter Two-One, and was stationed at Firebase Phoenix, Afghanistan.
Afghanistan[]
Allen helped Sergeant Foley train Afghan National Army troops on how to use and shoot riles and grenades, demonstrating how to aim down the sight of a weapon. Foley then informed Allen that Shepherd is waiting for him at the pit, and Allen meets with Corporal Dunn. Dunn tells Allen that Shepherd is seeing people run the pit so they can join his special ops unit, and also tells Allen that it's faster to switch to a pistol then reloading. Allen runs the pit, and when leaving it, alarm sounds go off and returning Humvees appear with wounded soldiers. Sergeant Foley orders his squad to ready up, as they deployed to fight off the OpFor.
In the Red Zone, Allen survives a rocket coming at his Humvee, and is picked up by General Shepherd from the ground. While holding the position, Allen and the squad are tasked with rescuing BCT One, and are ambushed by the OpFor. Allen, Foley and Dunn manage to assist BCT One, and escape to the LZ, where they meet General Shepherd. The general tells Allen that he's no longer with Hunter Two-One, and that he's taking orders from him.
Becoming a Spy[]
Allen was hand-picked by General Shepherd to go undercover in Vladimir Makarov's cell, the Inner Circle, under the alias Alexei Borodin. Allen received Russian tattoos for his new identity, and became a member of the Central Intelligence Agency and Task Force 141, saying it was honor to be chosen. When he asked when he could meet the members of 141, Shepherd told him that two members were on a operation to collect a ACS. During his time as a spy, Makarov learned that Alexei was actually an American agent, and decided to use him to kickstart his plan to blame the United States for an atrocity.
Airport Massacre[]
Allen was selected to participate in Makarov's assault on the Zakhaev International Airport, and Vladimir learned that his friend Yuri had informed the Americans of his plans. Makarov shot Yuri and left him for dead as Allen and the other members got into the elevator, and Vladimir reminded his men to not speak Russian. After battling FSB and police, Allen and the group met with Anatoly to escape, but Makarov shot Allen dead. His body was then left behind for FSB forces to find, implicating the United States as the ones responsible for the attack.
Legacy[]
Due to the FSB finding Allen's body, the United States was implicated in the massacre, and Russia decided to declare war on them. The result ignited World War III, with the Russian Army invading the United States, and Allen was a victim of a conflict of goals between General Shepherd and Makarov. Allen's former team, Hunter Two-One, participated in the war, with Private James Ramirez taking his place on the squad.
Despite his death, Allen's death was avenged by Task Force 141 members Price, Soap, and Yuri, who managed to kill General Shepherd and later Vladimir Makarov. With Shepherd and Makarov dead, Allen is finally able to rest in peace. Additionally, the war ended when Task Force 141 and Delta Force rescued the Russian President and his daughter, allowing the Russian President and the American President to make a peace treaty.
