It’s not just about being unable to see… It’s about… feeling normal
~ Joseph to Sebastian, upon retrieving his glasses.
Sebastian... You ever had the urge to jump when you're on a high place. Or the subway rolls by... imagine if you had that urge for a minute straight. Then two minutes.
~ Joseph to Sebastian.

Detective Joseph Oda is a central protagonist in the 2014 horror survival game The Evil Within, acting as the tritagonist of the main game, a supporting character and antagonist in The Assignment, a minor character in The Consequence, an antagonist in The Executioner, and a mentioned character in the 2017 sequel The Evil Within 2.

He is an intelligent detective of the Krimson City Police Department, who acts as Sebastian Castellanos and Juli Kidman's partner. When the group are called in to investigate a disturbance at Beacon Mental Hospital, they found themselves trap within a nightmarish world crawling with monsters and death traps. While inside STEM, Joseph would suffer from Ruvik's influence in turning into a Haunted, but he was saved from death after Ruvik's brain was destroyed.

He was voiced by Yuri Lowentahl (who voices Spider-Man in Insoamic Games' titular series, and also voiced Makoto Yuki in Persona 3, Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto Ben Tennyson in the Ben 10 series, and Sir Galleth Cooper in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time) in English, and Isshin Chiba (who voices Jin Kazama in the Tekken series) in Japanese.

Biography[]

Past[]

Not much is known about Joseph but according to the artwork in “The Art of The Evil Within” book, it can be assumed that he is married with one daughter. In a cutscene, Joseph is seen attempting to reason with Sebastian when the latter began excessively digging into the disappearance of his wife and daughter

The Evil Within[]

Joseph is first seen in the prologue, joining the police team in an attempt to investigate a mass murder which occurred in Beacon Memorial Hospital. After the ensuing chaos, it is unknown what happened to him until his rediscovery.

In chapter 5, he is found half-submerged in a liquid filled bathtub. Upon releasing him, it is discovered that his mental health was deteriorating with the cause being either prolonged stay in STEM or the machine he was hooked up to. Nevertheless, he will help Sebastian fight off enemies up until the point when they needed to rescue the trapped Kidman. After doing so, the two will fall into a hole, and be inaccessible until the next chapter.

In chapter 6, Joseph is discovered in the coast where he will wield a 2-handed axe. He will be subjected to multiple accidents such as triggering a tripwire, getting put in a guillotine, and being knocked down by The Sentinel. He will assist Sebastian with a sniper rifle during the fight against Neun and Zehn. After a run-in with Ruvik in a church, Joseph will again be separated as Ruvik arrives and places Sebastian in another part of STEM.

Joseph is met again in chapter 12 inside a school bus before Kidman immediately enters and starts the engine in an attempt to escape the Heresy monster. After escaping, Joseph is shot in the stomach and remains incapacitated for some time until the next chapter.

In chapter 13, Joseph awakes to find both him and Sebastian still in the school bus and trapped in a building. While riding an elevator, Joseph is separated and can be seen throughout the chapter running away from The Keeper. Sebastian eventually finds Joseph and the two attempt to convince Kidman to not shoot Leslie. This backfires and results in Joseph getting shot, presumably leading to his death.

The Assignment[]

In one instance which presumably happened in chapter 13, Joseph appears to have turned and attacks Kidman. This attack stops after he is hit by 3 axe strikes, causing him to turn back to normal.

The Executioner[]

Joseph appears as a boss in this DLC, attacking The Keeper with various weapons. During the last chapter, he is found half-submerged in a liquid filled bathtub which is presumably hooked up to a machine.

The Evil Within 2[]

In The Evil Within 2, Kidman informs Sebastian that Joseph is alive, but states that it's a long story.

Trivia[]

  • In The Evil Within 2, Joseph is mentioned in a review of the 11th photographic slide
  • Based on the flag pictures seen in the opening to his boss fight in The Executioner, it can be assumed that he came from a Japanese-Canadian descent.
