Hero Overview

Good grief.../Give me a break...
~ Jotaro's catchphrase, better known as "Yare yare daze..." in Japanese.
Ora, ora, ora, ora, ora, ora, ORA!
~ Jotaro when Star Platinum unleashes a barrage of punches in its a "Stand Rush".
There's only one reason you lost, DIO... just one simple reason. You pissed me off.
~ Jotaro after killing DIO for good.

Jotaro Kujo is the titular main protagonist of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.

Originally a Japanese delinquent, Jotaro is a member of the Joestar family and the third Joestar to carry the "JoJo" moniker. He would famously embark on a journey to save his dying mother and kill the Joestar family's archenemy, Dio Brando. Afterwards, Jotaro would become a marine biologist and frequently make reappearances in the series, serving as a mentor to other Joestars such as Josuke Higashikata. Jotaro wields the stand known as Star Platinum, a stand similar to that of Dio's The World which allows him to stop time. He's also the son of Holy Kujo, the grandson of Joseph Joestar and the father of Jolyne Cujoh.

Roles[]

He is a cameo character in the anime adaptation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency, the titular main protagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, the tritagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable, a minor character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo, and the overarching protagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean. He is also the main protagonist of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven video game.

Portrayals[]

Jotaro has been played by the following voice actors:

  • The late Kiyoyuki Yanada in the drama CD adaption of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future.
  • Jūrōta Kosugi in the OVA.
  • Daisuke Ono in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, and the anime.
  • Natsumi Takamori as a child.
  • Yūsuke Iseya in the live-action movie adaptation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable.
  • Tetsu Inada in the Part 5 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: GioGio's Bizarre Adventure.
  • Abie Hajtarkani in the English dub of the OVA.
  • Matthew Mercer in the English dub of the anime.
  • Dorothy Elias-Fahn as a child in the English dub of the anime.

Appearance[]

Jotaro is a tall, handsome, and well-built man. He has short, black hair, a strong jaw, bold eyebrows, and light eyes. He also bears a mild resemblance to his great-great grandfather Jonathan Joestar and his grandfather Joseph Joestar when he was a young man.

The superficial theme of Jotaro's attire changes in each successive part. His trademarks are a visored, ornamented cap, torn at the back and blending with his hair, and a roughly mid-calf-length coat with a standing collar.

Personality[]

Look, nobody ever said Jotaro Kujo was a nice guy. I beat the crap outta people, more than I have to. Some are even still in the hospital. I've had idiot teachers who like to talk big, so I taught them a lesson, and they never came back to class. If I go to a restaurant and the food is bad, I make it a policy to stiff 'em with the bill. But, even a bastard like me... can spot true evil when he sees it! True evil, are those who use the weak for their own gain, then crush them underfoot when they're through! Especially an innocent woman! And that is exactly what you've done, isn't it? And your Stand gets to hide from the victim, the law, and the consequences. That's why... I will judge you myself!
~ Jotaro Kujo to a brainwashed Noriaki Kakyoin.

Jotaro has a tough exterior, introduced as a rather rough delinquent. In truth however, he is dedicated, fair, and loyal. He is highly perceptive, intelligent and quick-witted, while keeping a perpetually cool, slightly neutral or disinterested attitude.

Two of his schoolmates and the school nurse affirm that it seems impossible to best him in a fight. After gaining Star Platinum, this trait easily carries over to his encounters with new Stand users. The only exception being Enrico Pucci, who was the only one who could kill him after gaining his most powerful stand Made in Heaven.

Jotaro loves his mother and respects his grandfather, although he may not be overt about it. It is not that he is unaware of his own love and/or respect - rather, he thinks anyone can tell his emotions just by looking at him, and probably thinks further effort in portraying how he feels to be a waste of time.

Jotaro is both fierce and gentle, and he shows these traits in various scenes, from his fight with N'Doul to the encounters with the D'Arby brothers. One shining example is how he spared Noriaki Kakyoin, instead of destroying him outright, even putting his own life in the line just to save Kakyoin from DIO's deadly slavery.

Jotaro is occasionally chased by adoring girls, including his classmates; whom he ignores or drives away; particularly when they begin to fuss or bicker.

He is DIO's main target, who acknowledges that Jotaro is his greatest threat. Apparently key to Jotaro's perceived chance of success in his final battle with Dio is the extent to which DIO is able to anger him.

Biography[]

Past[]

Jotaro was born in Japan 1970 and was supervised much by his mother Holy Kujo. He began to act out upon reaching his teenage years. After badly beating up four gang members, he turned himself to the police believing himself to have been possessed by an evil spirit. In order to prove his danger to everyone else, he used his newfound stand to take one of the guard's guns before attempting to shoot himself, only for said stand to grab the bullet.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders[]

JotaroWithStarPlatinum

Jotaro with his Stand, Star Platinum.

After Joseph Joestar failed to convince his grandson to get out of jail, he introduced Jotaro to his friend, Muhammad Avdol and his stand, Magician's Red. After a brief confrontation, the fortune teller was able to figure out that Jotaro is a Stand user. After the teenager decided to leave, Joseph decided to explain the introduction and origin of stands as well DIO's return.

Some time later while he's at school, Jotaro was suddenly attacked Noriaki Kakyoin who has used his stand to manipulate the school nurse and was using her to attack him. After being hit by an Emerald Splash, Jotaro defeats him by using Star Platinum to deflect the attack. Hierophant Green was later grabbed and beaten up, resulting in Kakyoin's defeat.

Jotaro ends up dragging him home, both considerably injured. Joseph was able to recognize the flesh bud on the teenager's forehead, explaining that it was a method for DIO to spread his influence. Jotaro uses Star Platinum to remove the flesh bud from Kakyoin's head - despite the risk that it might openly attack both of them. Kakyoin is freed from DIO's control as a result and the next day, Jotaro discovered that his mother's stand is killing her. In an attempt save her, he joins the crusaders and embarks on a journey to kill DIO.

At the beginning of the trip, the group is attacked by Gray Fly, whose Tower of Gray proves to be a match even for Star Platinum. Kakyoin was able to defeat the enemy stand while Joseph landed the plane due to the pilot's death. The crusaders later arrived at Hong Kong where they meet Polnareff for the first time in a restaurant. They all ate some food before the Frenchman decides reveal his intentions, resulting in Avdol confronting him instead. Avdol was able to defeat him and upon noticing the Frenchman's behavior, he quickly determined that his opponent was being controlled by DIO.

Jotaro destroys the flesh bud, allowing Polnareff to regain his freedom. They later bring him along after hearing his backstory and they rode a ship which is where Anne made her first appearance. They were soon attacked by an Impostor Captain who drags Jotaro into the ocean. The teenager defeats him despite the many attacks he had to endure thanks to Star Platinum's ability to elongate its fingers. However the ship was damaged, forcing them to board on another ship which is later revealed to be an enemy stand. Jotaro defeats the enemy stand user using his stand's ability, again.

At Singapore after Polnareff survives an enemy stand user attack, Kakyoin, Jotaro, and Anne spent the next day looking at sights in which the former began acting suspiciously, going as far as to push Jotaro off a building as a "joke". However after being punched into a cable car, it is revealed that Kakyoin has merely been impersonated by Rubber Soul who attached his stand onto Jotaro's finger. He soon tracks the user down and drowns him before interrogating him. After sparing Rubber Soul, Jotaro was attacked again and finally decides to pummel his opponent to submission. After the defeat of the enemy stand user, Jotaro returned to the group, telling them about the battle and the impersonator.

While Polnareff and Kakyoin was hunting down J. Geill, Jotaro and Joseph discover that Avdol was still alive and proceeded to move him to an island, claiming that they had buried the fortune teller. After surviving and pummeling Wheel of Fortune and arriving at a suspicious hotel, Jotaro began to grow suspicious of the hotel owner. He was able to trick the old lady, revealing her to be Enya, an important minion to DIO. He defeats the old lady and trapped her stand before leaving with the rest of the crusaders.

This, however, brings unwanted attention to them which came in the form of Steely Dan who kills Enya and implants his stand in Joseph's head. The enemy stand user proceeds to torment and taunt Jotaro repeatedly until the enemy stand was defeated. This eventually led up to Steely Dan being beaten up by Jotaro after faking his claim of defeat. In the desert, the group is attacked by an enemy stand known as The Sun who corners the crusaders underneath a rock. After the team figured out where the enemy stand user was hiding, Jotaro used his own stand to throw a rock at his opponent's hiding spot, resulting in their victory.

After surviving Manish Boy's attack, The Crusaders later visited an island to pick up a recovering Avdol before going to their destination on Submarine where they were attacked by another enemy stand which Jotaro defeats by breaking the stand's teeth. After arriving in Egypt, Joseph decided to ask the Speedwagon Foundation to bring in Iggy, a dog stand user which Avdol found some time ago. They were then attacked by N'Doul and his stand, Geb. After surviving the first few attacks, Jotaro decided to use Iggy and his stand to glide to the enemy stand user. After slowly falling to the ground, the teenager proceeded to throw the dog at N'Doul, distracting him enough for Jotaro to finish him off in a stand-off.

Some time later after Polnareff took a sword from an enemy stand user, Jotaro was tasked with making sure that the Frenchman doesn't get into any trouble. They visited a barbershop and somehow, the barber grabs the sword and ends up being controlled by it. Jotaro beats the enemy stand out of the barber's hand and Polnareff grabs the sword before accidentally unsheathing it, allowing him to be controlled. Under the influence of the enemy stand, the Frenchman ruthlessly and efficiently attacks Jotaro, losing only because he stabbed the teenager which allowed the sword to be broken down.

While looking for Polnareff who had been turned into a child, Jotaro was attacked by Alessi who also turns him into a child. Fortunately as a child, Jotaro was still able to pummel the enemy stand user with his own hands to the point that his stand's effect vanishes, turning the teenager and Polnareff back to their original age where they proceed to beat up their opponent, again. Some time after that, they visited a cafe where they are met by a gambler named Daniel D'Arby. He was able to steal Polnareff and Joseph's souls, forcing Jotaro to beat him at poker. The teenager was able to beat him by bluffing repeatedly, scaring the gamble to the point of madness. This allowed Jotaro to win the souls of his friends.

After discovering DIO's mansion, he along with Joseph and Kakyoin were separated from the others and was forced to play video games against the butler, a man named Terence D'Arby. Kakyoin was defeated and Jotaro was beginning to lose as Terence's stand allowed him to gain answers from his target's soul. Joseph was able to outsmart this by using Hermit Purple to play the game for Jotaro, resulting in Terence's subsequent defeat.

He later joins the crusaders in an attempt to confront DIO, only to discover that the vampire's stand ability was too strong and immediately bailing out with the rest of the crusaders. He and Polnareff then begin chasing after DIO. However, Jotaro arrived too late, finding Joseph dying right in front of him while telling him to not be consumed by anger. But Jotaro proceeded to angrily charge at DIO anyway who began taunting him before their stands began pummeling each other. Eventually, the vampire stopped time and began taunting his opponent, only to be punched in his own stopped time.

Later after stopping time again, DIO was tricked into letting his guard down which resulted in Star Platinum punching him again. Upon recovering, the vampire finally realized that his opponent could only move for a few seconds during stopped time and decided to throw a large amount of knives at Jotaro, sending him falling to the ground with knives stabbed into him.

The teenager however had already placed a book on his chest and hat, thus protecting himself. He was then forced to play dead convincingly until Polnareff appeared and stabs DIO's head. The Frenchman was quickly defeated and survived only because the vampire grew suspicious of Jotaro. Star Platinum quickly punched DIO away before he could stop time and he wound up with brain damage. Later Jotaro appears again in a sewer which DIO attempted to hide in, resulting in the vampire being punched all the way back to Joseph's corpse.

FinalShowdown

Jotaro vs DIO.

Jotaro arrived just as DIO was consuming Joseph's blood, growing more powerful in the process. The teenager was subsequently beaten up and nearly flattened with a steamroller before finally learning to stop time himself and breaking DIO's legs. He then stood by and watched as the vampire recovered, waiting to perform a fair beatdown, only to be distracted by DIO's blood. Still his stand managed to punch The World's leg, breaking the stand and the user as well. Jotaro later revives his grandfather and leaves DIO's remains in the sun. He later says his goodbyes to Polnareff before sending him away.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable[]

Good freaking grief, I take it back. Up close that watch is tacky as hell, although to be fair, that's the least of your worries now. There's something that's gonna look a lot worse than that piece of junk... and that, my friend, is your putrid face.
~ Jotaro Kujo to Yoshikage Kira.
Jotaro Josuke steam

Jotaro with Josuke.

Before the beginning of the part, Joseph revealed to his family in 1999 that he had an affair and sent Jotaro to remind Josuke Higashikata that the teenager will get a part of the inheritance. He met Koichi Hirose while the latter was going to school before introducing himself and witnessing Josuke using his stand. The two decided to converse, which is when Jotaro decided to explain that Josuke will be getting a part of Joseph's will along with a warning that there are a number of malevolent stand users living in Morioh. Some time later Jotaro arrived to pick up Angelo's stand but he arrived too late, resulting in the death of Josuke's grandfather. He and Josuke decided to perform a stake-out in order to hunt down Angelo. A few days later, rain began to fall which trapped the two in the house which was leaking. After avoiding the enemy stand multiple times, Josuke was able to trick the enemy stand user and trapped the stand in a rubber glove.

The two proceeded to interrogate Angelo who revealed the existence of Keicho Nijimura as well as the origin of stands. However, the enemy stand user accidentally insulted Josuke's hair which resulted in him being transfixed and then fused into a rock. Some time later after the appearance of Red Hot Chili Pepper, Jotaro was threatened by the stand user and was able to survive an attack which prompted him to invite his allies to hunt down the enemy stand. After their first encounter with Red Hot Chili Pepper, he decided to invite Okuyasu on a boat to check on senile Joseph while tasking Josuke and Keicho to look out for the enemy stand user. After the defeat of Akira, Jotaro decided to interrogate him which revealed that a rat has been used as a test subject for the stand arrow. He enlists the help of Josuke to hunt down the rat. Jotaro later discovers that there are two rats with stands and Josuke only managed to kill one of them. Jotaro wound up having to use himself as bait which soon allowed Josuke to get a clear shot on the second rat.

Jotaro threatening Kira

Jotaro confronting Kira.

They eventually discover the serial killer in Morioh. During the investigation, Jotaro got a lead on the serial killer and invited Koichi to come along. The two met a tailor who claimed to be the creator of the killer's suit. The tailor was swiftly killed by the killer's stand and during the fight, Jotaro was able to determine how the enemy stand works. Unfortunately in the process of figuring it out, he was blown up and severely injured. He eventually recovered right as Yoshikage Kira was preparing to leave the injured Koichi. Star Platinum proceeded to pummel the killer, leaving him injured in the same place they were until Josuke and Okuyasu arrived. In the process of the investigation, Jotaro discovered Kira's family home and invited the main cast to investigate it, resulting in them being locked in by a stand. Jotaro was able to counter the enemy stand and they were able to exit the house.

During the final battle, Jotaro was unfortunately too far away to reach Kira even with time stop. Luckily, Koichi was able to immobilize Kira's hand long enough for Jotaro to beat him up. Jotaro appears when Reimi ascends to heaven and later joins Joseph as they left Morioh.

Before the events of the part, Jotaro sends Koichi in his place to procure a sample of Haruno Shiobana, later revealed to be Giorno Giovanna for the Speedwagon Foundation.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean[]

I want you to know, you were always incredibly important to me.
~ Jotaro Kujo to his daughter.
JotaroReturnsAnime

Jotaro carrying Jolyne.

Five years later, his daughter, Jolyne Cujoh was framed for pickpocketing. Jotaro's wife calls him to come help bail her out but he refuses and hangs up because he had to go to Tokyo for an emergency. Due to his busy lifestyle, he divorced from his wife.

Despite the large gap between his relationship between Jotaro and his daughter, he still cares about his daughter. When she was imprisoned for a crime she didn't commit, Jotaro learned of Johngalli A's link with DIO and comes to Green Dolphin Street prison to have Jolyne escape, aware that it is a trap. However he and Jolyne are attacked by Johngalli A and a Stand known as Whitesnake, which cooperate to take down Jotaro; despite his prowess, Whitesnake manages to steal Jotaro's Stand and memories, storing them in the form of DISCs and he falls into a coma. Yet, before falling unconscious, he confesses his affection for his daughter, prompting Jolyne to stay in prison and try to retrieve the DISCs.

For most of it afterwards, Jotaro is left in a coma waiting for Jolyne to give him back his Memory DISC. However when Jotaro is given back his Memory DISC, he managed recover and later saved his daughter from being shot by Pucci. Now fully mastering his Stand, he confronts Pucci and has Ermes shoot the priest, stopping time in order to follow up and launch a spear straight at Pucci's head. However, Pucci somehow is able to see and react to the spear and narrowly avoids being killed, while also making use of the spear's momentum to send him toward the ideal location to unlock the Stand Made in Heaven.

Jotaro'sUntimelyDemiseAnime

Jotaro's death.

During the final struggle, Star Platinum's time stop becomes the only asset enabling the heroes to reach Pucci. Protected by Diver Down, Jotaro tried to stop time at the right moment, when Pucci would attack. Unfortunately, Pucci exploited his love for his daughter and during the crucial time stop, Jotaro realized that Pucci let knives fall down on Jolyne, echoing the method that DIO once tried to kill Jotaro himself with. Jotaro lost time pulling her away, and couldn't hit Pucci, who cut his face in half and killed him. Due to the effects of accelerated time from Made in Heaven, his body, along with Ermes' and Anasui's, quickly rot and disintegrate as the universe accelerated to the point of reset.

After the reset, Emporio encountered an alternate, somewhat dissimilar doppelganger of Jotaro and Jolyne in Green Dolphin Street Prison, with the alternate Jotaro having slightly different facial features and altered clothing. Both the alternate Jotaro and Jolyne were repeating the moment where Jotaro arrived to rescue Jolyne from prison just before Whitesnake's attack, only for Pucci to enter and knock them both aside as he walked towards Emporio. The two doppelgangers then quickly fled the scene, and were not seen again.

Pucci claimed that Jotaro's soul was erased with the old universe, but when he was killed by Emporio and the universe reset once more, Jotaro's soul was reborn in the new universe, albeit with presumably a different name. Additionally, time had altered to seemingly erase Pucci, or at least his actions, meaning that Jolyne never went to prison, and in the new reality, and Jotaro appeared to have not been estranged from his wife and Jolyne, whose soul had been reborn with the name Irene. As such, like the other reborn souls, the reborn Jotaro presumably had no memory of the events of the resets and now-altered past. Stone Ocean ends with Emporio, who survived both resets, hitching a ride with Irene, Anakiss (the reborn Anasui), and Eldis (the reborn Ermes), picking up a reborn Weather Report as Irene and Anakiss, who were in a relationship and ready to get married, set off to get their marriage approved by the reborn Jotaro.

Powers and Abilities[]

S-Platinum SO

Star Platinum

Compassion is something you're never gonna get from me. I haven't got any kindness for your sorry, undead ass. Oh, I gotta admit. You look pretty pathetic riving on the ground in agony. As much as I want to, killing you like this would leave a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Wonder how long it'll take for you to heal? Three seconds? Four maybe? The very moment your legs are healed, Star Platinum's headed your way, to demolish you!
~ Jotaro Kujo on Star Platnium to DIO.

One of the strongest Stands in the series beside the other protagonists, Star Platinum possesses incredible senses, immense strength, stamina, accuracy and speed. Like other physically powerful (or Close-Range) Stands, Star Platinum suffers from a narrow range of activity; active only within a 2-3 meter radius from Jotaro.

It is similar to Dio Brando's The World, and, as it turns out, can likewise be used to stop time; an ability revealed at the very end of his fight with Dio. The Tarot card The Star, after which it is named, symbolizes hope above all.

Star Platinum: The World is the evolved version of Star Platinum which first appears near the end of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders during the climactic battle against DIO and is the highest form to which Jotaro is shown to develop his Stand. Star Platinum: The World can stop time for as long as five seconds. It is stated that it can freeze time for longer, but five seconds is the limit for human endurance under stopped time.

Trivia[]

  • Jotaro's name comes from a samurai family of the Kamakura shogunate called the "Hōjō clan".
  • Due to being the most recurring JoJo and having a major role or importance in every story he appears in, Jotaro is effectively the protagonist of the entire series.
  • Jotaro is also the first JoJo in the series to be a Stand user.
