Junichiro Tanizaki is a supporting protagonist in the action mystery/supernatural manga and anime series Bungo Stray Dogs. He is Naomi's older brother and a member of the Armed Detective Agency who possesses an illusion creation ability, called "Light Snow".
He is voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga (who also voiced Hideyoshi Nagachika from Tokyo Ghoul) and by Spike Spencer (who originally voiced Shinji Ikari from the Evangelion franchise) in the English version of the anime.
Appearance[]
Tanizaki is an 18-year-old young man with a slim, average build, orange hair with silver bobby pins on the left side of his head, hazel eyes, and pale skin. His outfit consists of an off-white V-neck sweater with a black undershirt underneath, red hoodie that usually wraps on his waist, light blue jeans, and a pair of brown shoes.
Personality[]
Of all members of the Armed Detective Agency, Tanizaki is the most "average" individual who lacks a quirky trait such as Dazai's suicidal tendencies or Kunikida's strictness with his ideals. However, he is capable of his productivity as a member, carrying his daily tasks and missions with his colleagues and taking care of his sister Naomi. In addition of being average, Tanizaki does not consider himself as "not too useful for battle" as his ability is not as offensive as Kenji's. In contrast, he is skilled in acting and adapting to his surroundings, as seen as playing a role of a bomber during Atsushi's entrance exam.
Despite being referred as the "wimpiest in the east", Tanizaki deeply cares of his comrades' well beings, but he has a fragile sense of morality, which leads to taking the path of preserving himself and the Agency, especially if it involves immoral actions. In other words, any kinds of impulsive actions from anyone such as John Steinbeck leads to Tanizaki becoming the most dangerous member by liability. With the involvement of Naomi being in danger, he is extremely violent towards anyone who attempt to hurt her, even with at least one of his fellow members of the Agency.
Ability[]
Light Snow - Tanizaki possesses an ability to project illusions within a certain range around him, which covers the affected area with artificial snowfall. Classified as "defensive and supplementary", Tanizaki usually utilizes it for stealth and recon missions, allowing him to hide himself and other intended targets. Not only it is used within the range of his presence, but it is also used for remote areas, including a security camera to alter the footage's reality.
Trivia[]
- Despite that Atsushi refers to him with a "-san" honorific suffix, Tanizaki is approximately 3 months younger than the former, in which Atsushi would have refer to him with a "-kun" suffix. Atsushi was born on May 5 while Tanizaki was born on July 24.
- His only dislike is earthquakes, a reference of his namesake who had a long-term fear of earthquakes, due to his home being destroyed during the 1894 Meiji Tokyo Earthquarke.
- Him and Naomi's apartment number is 203, containing a pun for a Japanese word for big brother, or "nii-san" ("ni" means "two" and "san" means "three").
- Light Snow's color and functions are a visual pun for "green screen".
