Kaa (left), as illustrated in the 1895 edition of The Two Jungle Books

Unlike his depiction in the Disney version, Kaa in the original version of The Jungle Book and many numerous non-Disney versions has been portrayed as a hero, mentor and ally of Mowgli. Kaa most likely is one of Mowgli's notable allies, alongside with Bagheera & Baloo. Kaa was a huge and powerful indian python, Thirty-three feet long, more than a hundred years old and still in his prime. Bagheera & Baloo enlisted him to help help to rescue Mowgli when the man-cub was captured by the Bandar-log and taken to an abandoned human city. Kaa broke down the wall of the building in which Mowgli was imprisoned and used his serpentine hypnosis to draw the monkeys toward his waiting jaws. Bagheera and Baloo were also hypnotized, but Mowgli was immune because he was human, and broke the spell on his friends. Years later Kaa persuades Mowgli to visit a treasure chamber guarded by an old beneath an ancient city. The cobra tried to kill Mowgli but its poison had dried up. Mowgli took a jeweled item away as a souvenir, not realizing the trouble it would later. In later years Mowgli asked Kaa for help when his wolf pack is threatened by rampaging dhole. Kaa goes into a trance so that he can search his century-long memory for a stratagem to defeat the dogs. With Kaa's help Mowgli tricked the dhole into attacking prematurely. Kaa took no part in the resulting battle, but Mowgli and the wolves finally killed all the dhole, though not without grievous losses.

  • As mentioned above, Kaa is originally a protagonist. Kaa is the protagonist in Kaa's Underwater Adventure: The Jungle Book 3
  • Kaa has been portrayed differently in the Disney version, which is well known to many viewers. During the making of the Disney version of Jungle Book, the developers turned Kaa into a villain, believing he would have a low rating as a protagonist & also the public of that time will not accept a snake as a hero, since being known as the symbol of the Devil. Though in the Disney series Jungle Cubs it is shown that when he was younger, Kaa was good and was on friendly terms with the other animal characters.
