Kabal is a warrior who is the former leader of the Black Dragon Clan and a supporting protagonist of the Mortal Kombat franchise.

He is voiced by David Lodge in Mortal Kombat (2011) and by Jonathan Cahill in Mortal Kombat 11.

Roles[]

He a supporting protagonist turned minor (undead and possessed) antagonist in Mortal Kombat 9 and a minor antagonist (still undead and possessed) in Mortal Kombat X. He later appears in Mortal Kombat 11 as a supporting antagonist with his past self also being fought in one chapter.

History[]

Kabal was the leader of the Black Dragon Clan commaing Kano and Erron Black, but eventually quit and attempted to reform himself as a New York City Police Department police officer, and was partnered with Kurtis Stryker.

Mortal Kombat 9[]

Kabal and Stryker's lives changed forever when Shao Kahn began an invasion of Earthrealm. After reporting to base over walkie-talkie, Kabal and Stryker fought on a New York rooftop against the invaders. The two face Reptile, who knocks Kabal back, leading Stryker to defeat the reptilian ninja. Stryker and Kabal head to street level, despite Kabal warning his partner that it wasn't safe. While Kabal and Stryker goes street level, they encounter Mileena. After Stryker defeats Mileena, the two of them encounter Raiden, with Kabal being surprised to see him shoot lightning. However the monstrous Kintaro severely burns Kabal, and when Stryker was indisposed, Kabal is dragged into Outworld and rescued by Kano. Kabal's body is healed to a workable state by Shang Tsung's magic, aside from his severely damaged lungs that could not be repaired, which leads to him being forced to wear artificial respirators as his lungs. When Kabal awakens, Kano tries to tempt him back to the Black Dragon, even giving him his old hookswords. After Kabal discovers the Black Dragon were aiding the invasion, he realised his disfigurement was Kano's fault, and after fighting him, forces him to take him to the leader of the invasion. In Shao Kahn's throne room, Kabal decided to make a surprise attack, despite Kano telling him Kahn was too powerful. However, he's stopped in his tracks by Mileena and Noob Saibot, both of whom he defeats. Shao Kahn quickly demands Quan Chi to close the Earthrealm portal, but Kabal unknowingly uses his super speed to jump into the portal in time.

In Earthrealm again, Kabal figures his super speed is a residual effect of Outworld's magic. Right after, he is attacked by Cyber Sub-Zero due to using the portal without permission, but defeats him. Afterwards Sheeva, mistaking him for a treacherous member of the Cyber Lin Kuei, fights him but Kabal defeats her. Kabal is than approached by Raiden and Smoke to join the Defenders of Earthrealm. Kabal recognised the former from earlier, and is assured that Stryker has joined them. After Smoke revealed Sub-Zero used to be his friend, Kabal agreed to help him. As part of the Earthrealm Defenders, Kabal is reunited with Stryker and after Earth's souls were saved by Nightwolf and Sub-Zero, they try to work out their next move. The Lin Kuei surrounded the group, and Kabal and the others fought them off. Right afterwards, they were set upon by the empowered Sindel, who killed them all. Kabal is later resurrected as a vengeful revenant by Quan Chi.

Mortal Kombat X[]

For the next 25 years, Kabal continued serving Quan Chi as an undead slave. many years before the main events of the game, Kabal, Sindel and Kurtis Stryker attacked Raiden and Fujin at Raiden's temple. Along with Quan Chi and his demon army. Raiden and Fujin defeated the demons first and then Kabal, Stryker, Sindel and Quan Chi, but not before Quan Chi summoned Shinnok into Raiden's temple. When Shinnok was defeated, Quan Chi and his revenants retreated.

He was seen with the other revenants versions of Smoke, Stryker, Sindel, Kitana, Liu Kang and Kung Lao escorting Quan Chi to his fortress to await D'Vorah. Kabal, the other Revenants and Quan Chi traveled by horse due to Quan Chi's powers being weaker than what they were before. They were ambushed by the Special Forces, Jax, Kenshi, and Sareena. Kabal charged in on his demon horse and attacked the solider while the others attacked for a safe distance before getting closer and into the fight. Kenshi rushed in to protect the Special Forces soldiers, while Kabal and Kenshi fought each other during amidst the battle between the Revenants and the Special Forces.

After the battle, Kabal retreated with the rest of the revenants to Quan Chi's fortress, and he wasn't seen again for the rest of the story. By the end of the game, a darker, crueler Raiden entered the Netherrealm with Shinnok's living, decapitated head, where he warned the realm's new rulers, Kitana and Liu Kang, what fate awaits them and anyone else who pose any danger to Earthrealm (including Kabal).

Mortal Kombat 11[]

Kabal returns as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 11. He was revealed on February 5, 2019. He first appears in chapter 1, where he and Jade were seen bowing before Shinnok's head during Raiden and the Special Forces invasion of the Netherrealm. Kabal tore through an Earthrealm soldier and fought Cassie but was defeated.

After Kronika manipulated time to merge past and present, Kabal's younger self, during a time when he leads the the Black Dragon, was among those present, and participates in the ambush on the Special Forces Desert Command base and captures the younger Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. Kabal was lied to by the older Kano, who told him that Sonya was the one responsible for his burns by torturing him to get information on the Black Dragon. He attacked Sonya to get some "pre-emptive vengeance" before being defeated by her. His fate after the Special Forces storm the Black Dragon is unknown. However, given the presence of his Revenant, he presumably survived and was taken into custody.

The Revenant version of Kabal, along with Jade, were guards of Kronika's crown in Shang Tsung's island. The Revenant version of Kabal began circling around the younger Jax and Jacqui in the courtyard, but was stopped by Jax. Kabal and Jade confronted the two Briggs, and he taunted them. However, the Briggs went onto defeat him.

In his non canon ending, the human Kabal defeated Kronika, but decided that he did not want the responsibility of keeping time, so he went back and returned it to Kronika. In return, Kabal was allowed to take out all those who could burn him, and left the Black Dragon. Presumably using riches from the clan, Kabal retired from the Black Dragon clan to live a life of domestic bliss with two sons, living in a mansion armed with military grade weaponry to take out Shao Khan or Shinnok in case they ever showed up.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath[]

After Shang Tsung, Fujin and Nightwolf revisit the timeline, The Revenant version of Kabal and Jade ambush them on the island before the Briggs arrive. The Revenant version of Kabal battles Fujin, but is defeated by the wind God.

Personality[]

Kabal is shown to be on the side of good by the time of the Outworld invasion, although Kano later attempts to convince him to return to the Black Dragon. It is also revealed that it was Kano who healed Kabal and gave him his respiratory mask. Before his disfigurement by Kintaro's flames, he was an NYPD officer alongside Kurtis Stryker. Both he and Stryker later join the Earthrealm warriors in their struggle against Shao Kahn, but are killed by a resurrected Sindel. Their souls are then collected by Quan Chi and reanimated as undead revenants. Under the sorcerer's spell, he serves the fallen Elder God Shinnok and aids Quan Chi in his quest to free his master and take over the Earthrealm.

In Mortal Kombat 11, the revenant Kabal serves Liu Kang and Kitana, who had by that point become emperor and empress of the Netherrealm, alongside Jade and Kung Lao. A younger pre-disfigurement Kabal appears as well, summoned due to Kronika’s meddling with timeline. This Kabal is still a member of the Black Dragon, and fights a younger Sonya after hearing from the older Kano that she is the one to disfigure him in the future (this being a lie in order to get the two to fight).

Powers and Abilities[]

Kabal is a ruthless, but level-headed fighter and wields his hookswords with great skill. His face is so hideous it can scare people to death, as evidenced by one of his fatalities. Kabal can also fire a plasma blast from his mask and use his superhuman speed to perform a dash, that spins his opponent around like a top. As shown in one of his fatalities, he can move up to speeds far quicker than the speed of sound though his top speed is unknown.

Trivia[]

  • Kabal's burned animation model in Mortal Kombat (2011) seems to be blind in one eye.
  • The pre disfigured MK 9 era Kabal makes a cameo in Robocop's ending as part of a "interagency effort" against OCP.
