Kabru is the supporting protagonist of the 2014 fantasy seinen series Delicious in Dungeon. He is the leader of his adventuring party, and a great battle tactician but lacks knowledge about monsters and dungeon. He is currently on a journey to close the dungeon due to the tragedy of seeing his village and family destroyed by dungeon monsters as a child.
He is voiced by Wataru Kato in Japanese and by Cedric Williams in English.
Appearance[]
Kabru is a average young-aged human with dark skin, messy black hair and blue eyes. His usual outfit is a light armor with black cloth underneath and a pair of legs armor. He usually keeps his sword at his side.
Biography[]
At the age of 7, Kabru had to witness his village being completely destroyed by monsters coming out of the dungeon. He was later rescued by the Canaries group and adopted by their vice-commander, Milsiril. Despite being surrounded and loved by Milsiril, Kabru still wants to become stronger to close the dungeons and prevent disasters from happening like his village. Eventually after some persuasion, Milsiril had to give in and she decided to give him hellish training sessions.
Years later, he came to The Island after hearing about there being a dungeon here. When he arrived, he also took the opportunity to observe the other adventurers to see who would be beneficial as an ally or an enemy.
Personality[]
Kabru is a serious and skeptical person, very good at analysis and deduction. But he also has an arrogant and cynical side, for example sometimes judging Laios's party without an official conclusion or being overconfident in his own abilities leading to the death of his party.
He also has a very strong sense of justice, wants to close the dungeon so no one experiences the same tragedy as him, and hates those who are greedy or take advantage of power and wealth.
He often puts on a friendly face with little emotion to probe or get to know others, willing to do anything to achieve his goals no matter how bad it is, for example willing to eat monsters even though he disgusts them. But with his party or people he has grown close to like Laios and Mithrun, he will show more of his true personality and emotions, willing to give them advice or even encourage them.
Abilities[]
Kabru is very proficient with melee weapons from swords, daggers, to spears. Combined with his memorization of human vital organs, he is especially dangerous in combat with humans or humanoids. He has excellent observation abilities, perfect memory, good strategy, diplomacy and is very charismatic which helps him create many relationships or attract others. He is also an expert in human psychology, so he can sometimes manipulate human.
Trivia[]
- The official Dungeon Meshi Adventurer's Bible states that Kabru's name is apparently unknown, meaning that Kabru is either an alias or that he simply lacks a surname, similar to how Izutsumi's profile also states her name is unknown.
- Kabru serves as a foil to the main protagonist Laios: while both are skilled swordsmen and party leaders with extensive knowledge in their interests, Kabru is interested in how other people work and while charismatic, tends to hide his feelings and can be somewhat of a liar. Conversely, Laios loves monsters and while terrible at social interaction, is extremely blunt and open with his opinions and intentions.
- Kabru's name derives from a mountain in the Himalayas, roughly meaning White Avalanche. As the name of his village, Utaya can mean “uplifted” in Hindi, it’s likely that Kabru comes from a region analogous to India.
- In some of the extra comics, Kabru recalls that his eye colour was viewed as abnormal by his village, with some of the villagers even accusing his mother of sleeping with a succubus. Fortunately, Milsiril assures him that such eye colours, while rare are not impossible to occur from genetic quirks. Laios also “comforts” him by informing him that succubi are genetically incompatible with humans and if anything, Kabru’s mother slept with an incubus instead.
