I don’t know, wander the Earth, search for my soul…
~ Kai, in his Mortal Kombat 4 ending, explaining to Raiden what he will do next

Kai is a minor character in the Mortal Kombat series. He made his debut in Mortal Kombat 4 as a nimble and agile Nepali fighter of the Gurkha warrior class. Similar to Liu Kang, he is a Shaolin monk and skilled martial artist with the ability to manipulate fire in battle.

Physical appearance[]

In his first appearance, Kai wears a dark red headband, sash, belt, and shin guards. He has baggy black pants, grey spiked wristbands, and has white tiger stripes on his body.

In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, his primary outfit is more armored, his hair is in corn rows and he has mustache and a beard. His alternate costume is based on his original MK4 counterpart.

History[]

Mortal Kombat 4[]

Kai appears in the official Mortal Kombat 4 comic book that was distributed with some versions of the actual video game. He is first seen training with Liu Kang. Their activities are interrupted when they witness an object fall from the sky. Investigating where it landed, they discover Fujin in a crater surrounded by demons. The two can rescue the god and soon learn from Raiden that these were servants of the fallen Elder God named Shinnok. After Kai and Liu Kang join forces with the other Earthrealm warriors, they all travel to the realm of Edenia to stop Shinnok's evil plan.

After beating the story with Kai, his weapon will change to Raiden's lightning staff. He is the only one who will change weapons upon beating the game. This reflects his actual ending in which he receives the staff in order to aid his journey to search for his good soul.

Mortal Kombat: Deception[]

In Konquest mode, a side mission revolves around Kai. After  Shujinko encounters Kung Lao in Earthrealm and discovers that all of the Shaolin monks have been slaughtered, the latter requests that Kai has found in Outworld so that he can return and help build the monastery again. When approached, Kai states that he had finished adventuring Earthrealm and would only return once his explorations in Outworld were accomplished. So he gives Shujinko the lightning staff from Raiden to give to Kung Lao,

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon[]

Kai would return to join the Forces of Light during the Battle of Armageddon, to prevent the Forces of Darkness gaining the power of Blaze. During the battle he could be seen battling both Reptile and Jarek before the Pyramid of Argus emerged.

Mortal Kombat 1[]

Within Liu Kang's New Era, Kai is mentioned to be a Master at the Wu Shi academy, having taught Scorpion in the past, and would become the teacher of Raiden and Kung Lao, teaching the former Crouching Tiger style and the latter Leaping Cheetah style. Afterwards, he would take on Ashrah as a student.

Personality[]

Kai is a good-hearted man and great friend with Liu Kang, as he helps him with assisting Raiden in defeating the fallen Elder God, Shinnok. He also wishes to seek self-enlightenment, as he wonders the world in search of one.

Powers and Abilities[]

Kai was part of the White Lotus Clan and trained with the other Shaolin monks: Liu Kang and Kung Lao. As a result, he has very nimble moves like his Renegade Kick, and projectiles bearing the resemblance of Liu Kang's albeit slightly different in terms of execution like his Downward and Upward Fireball.
