“
Sora, are you really— No. It can't be! I won’t let him go!
„
~ Kairi after Sora disappears.
“
I'm tired of waiting, so don't tell me to stay behind! From now on, wherever one of us goes, the other follows, got it?
„
~ Kairi to Sora before the final battle.
“
Thinking of you, wherever you are. We pray for our sorrows to end, and hope that our hearts will blend. Now I will step forward to realize this wish. And who knows: starting a new journey may not be so hard, or maybe it has already begun. There are many worlds, but they share the same sky — one sky, one destiny.

~ Kairi's thoughts while Sora reads her letter.
Kairi is the tritagonist of the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
She's a Princess of Heart and was from Radiant Garden (Hollow Bastion) and currently resides on Destiny Islands. Her grandmother's status is unknown. She's the love interest and later girlfriend of Sora.
In Japan, she was voiced by Risa Uchida in every game as her current age, and her younger self in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory was voiced by Sumire Morohoshi. In English version, she is voiced by Hayden Panettiere in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep as her current age. She is also voiced by Alyson Stoner in Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prolouge, Kingdom Hearts III, and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. Her young self in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory was voiced by Ariel Winter, who also voiced Sofia the First in the show of the same name, and also portrayed Alex Dunphy in Modern Family.
Aqua and Mickey save Kairi from being attacked by Unversed in Radiant Garden, and she gives the former flowers as a sign of her gratitude. Aqua is also able to sense the light inside Kairi. After the Unversed are defeated, Aqua casts a spell on her that will allow her light to lead her to someone to keep her safe when she's in trouble. She then thanks Aqua and leaves with her grandmother, who tells her the story of light and the darkness.
Kingdom Hearts[]
A year after the events of Birth by Sleep, Radiant Garden was covered in darkness, and all of its inhabitants were whisked away to different locations across the universe, with Kairi ending up on Destiny Islands due to the spell Aqua cast on her a year earlier.
Sometime after this, Sora and Riku talked about "the new girl at the mayor's house" in their Secret Place on the island, referring to Kairi.
At the beginning of the game, she and her friends are making a raft to go visit other worlds, and her body gets whisked away to Hollow Bastion when the Heartless attack the island, with her heart taking residence inside Sora. Due to this, Sora sees multiple visions of Kairi throughout the game, the first time being when he wakes up in a motel room after his fight with Leon, when he sees Yuffie as her until she tells him her name, a second time when he visits Merlin's study in Traverse Town, when she tells him that the study reminds her of their secret place on the islands, and for a third time in Deep Jungle, where Sora briefly sees her behind Tarzan. He eventually finds her in Neverland, where Riku has her body at Hook's Ship. Before Sora, Donald and Goofy set off for Hollow Bastion, Kairi tells Sora from within him that she believes in him, and then shows him her memory of her grandma telling her a story about the light when she was younger. When Sora sacrifices his heart in Hollow Bastion, she is revived and later restores Sora in turn. She appears at the end after Ansem, Seeker of Darkness is defeated and Sora promises to come back to her soon, which she knows he will.
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories[]
She was replaced in Sora's memories by Naminé with her magic and remembered at the end of Sora's story. In Riku's story, she was in Naminé's form and not forgotten by Riku.
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days[]
Kairi is only seen in flashbacks and mentioned by Riku and Xion.
Kingdom Hearts II[]
She comes into contact with Roxas in their minds, which allowed Sora to talk to her. She was kidnapped by Axel and Saïx at different times. Later, she reunites with her friends and Nobody Naminé. At the end, she went back home to Destiny Islands and reunites with her friends there.
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[]
When Young Xehanort makes Sora fall into a second layer of sleep in The World That Never Was, he dreams about various people he knows, one of them being Kairi, who walks away from Sora with Riku. She then turns into Aqua while Riku's dream self turns into Terra, and Sora himself turns into Ventus. They then walk away from Sora and turn back into Riku and Kairi.
Later, when Xigbar brings the strength of Sora's heart into question, he pauses for a moment before retaliating by saying that although the Keyblade didn't choose him, he is proud to be connected to those it did, at which point all of the friends in Sora's heart, including Kairi, appear behind him for a moment.
Knowing that Xehanort is forming a new Organization XIII, Yen Sid tells Riku to get Kairi so he can train her to use the Keyblade.
Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep -A fragmentary passage-[]
When Kairi arrives at Yen Sid's Tower, he tells her about the new Organization XIII and the fates that befell Terra, Ventus, and Aqua. Mickey reveals to her and Riku that Aqua sacrificed herself to protect Riku from the Heartless when they were closing the Door to Darkness, staying behind in the Realm of Darkness. After Mickey and Riku are given the task of rescuing Aqua, Kairi asks what her task will be, and is told that she and Lea, Axel's original self, will be training together under Merlin to use the Keyblade. This makes Kairi shocked because Axel kidnapped her before, but Mickey and Riku assure her that he is now on their side, as he saved Sora from becoming one of Xehanort's thirteen vessels. She then leaves for her training.
Between Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep -A fragmentary passage- and Kingdom Hearts III[]
As Kairi trains with Lea, she is still somewhat wary of him because of his kidnapping of her as Axel, but she gets used to him over the course of their training and they form an acquaintance with each other, as she can't bring herself to hate him after finding out that he also wants to save a friend. Kairi sometimes catches Lea staring at her face, and when she asks him what's wrong, he says that he doesn't know, but that he feels like there's something he should be remembering.
Kingdom Hearts lll[]
To help her and Lea hone their Keyblade skills for the impending war with Master Xehanort and his thirteen pieces of darkness, Merlin provides them a secret location to train with all the time they need. While there, it is not long before Kairi decides to change out of her clothes from Kingdom Hearts II and cut her hair, before putting on her new outfit and showing it off to Lea. Once they finish their training, they regroup with Sora, who had recovered and restored Aqua and Ventus, thus giving them Seven Guardians of Light in the seven Keyblade bearers of Sora, Kairi, Riku, King Mickey, Aqua, Ventus, and Lea. Joined by Donald and Goofy, they head to the Keyblade Graveyard to face off with Master Xehanort.
However, he is waiting for them, and after fighting through an army of Heartless, Nobodies, and Unversed, the good guys are confronted by Terra-Xehanort, who quickly catches them off-guard and takes out Ven and Lea before Donald blasts him away with a Zettaflare spell so powerful, Donald collapses in exhaustion afterwards. Seizing the moment, a massive Demon Tide hurricane appears to finish the job. Sora, Riku, and Aqua take a stand against it, but Aqua hesitates upon seeing the Shadows in the Demon Tide as her dark self, Anti-Aqua, leaving her paralyzed with fear. As a result, the Demon Tide strikes, and sweeps up Aqua, Ven, King Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Lea, and Kairi into its maelstrom. Sora tries futilely in vain to reach out to Kairi as she tries to do the same and save her, but is unable to before she is swept away into the darkness to her apparent doom. Devastated and heartbroken over losing Kairi and everyone else, Sora collapses in defeat after screaming in anguish, believing that Master Xehanort has already won. Riku refuses to believe that as he takes a defiant last stand against the Demon Tide, holding it off for as long as he can before it consumes him as well and goes for Sora next, ensuring the prophecy of the Keyblade War came to pass as light was extinguished and darkness won.
However, despite her apparent demise in the Demon Tide, Kairi was able to use her power as a Princess of Heart to not only protect her heart and body from oblivion, but also save Sora, sending him to the Final World to meet Chirithy, the Nameless Star, and Naminé, who had also been slain with Kairi when the Demon Tide claimed her. After restoring his own body, Sora used the power of waking to travel back through the worlds he recently visited to recover the hearts of Riku, Aqua, Ventus, King Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Lea, before the Grim Reaper of the Heartless, the Lich, could lay claim to them itself and cast them into oblivion, killing them permanently. After being warned by Young Xehanort of the damage he was causing with using the power of waking the wrong way, and unknowingly violating the Master of Masters' prophecy as well, Sora sets course back for the Keyblade Graveyard, where when he is heading back, he finds Kairi waiting for him in the passageway, unharmed and fully intact in heart and body, ready to join him to return to their friends and try again to stop Master Xehanort. When they arrive back at the Graveyard, everyone else is there waiting for them, fully restored and ready to give it another shot.
Upon encountering Terra-Xehanort again, before he can repeat history, the Lingering Will, Terra's Keyblade Armor imbued with his willpower, intervenes and drives him off. As a result, when the Demon Tide appears to fulfill its duty, Sora obliterates it with the Keyblades of fallen Keyblade warriors from around the Graveyard, destroying its core and ending its threat once and for all. With the Demon Tide and Terra-Xehanort stopped, Master Xehanort summons the Skein of Severance labyrinth for the Guardians of Light to do battle with his pieces of darkness. While Donald, Goofy, and Master Yen Sid hold off the massive reinforcements of Heartless, Nobodies, and Unversed, Kairi and the other Guardians go after Master Xehanort.
Kairi and Lea finds themselves fighting off Saix and the hooded member of True Organization XIII when Sora finds them. When Xemnas appears to punish Lea/Axel for his previous treason against Xemnas' Organization, the hooded figure offers to end Axel's life, but when she hesitates, Sora tries to talk her down, only to be attacked by her in a blind fury. In that moment, Roxas, talking through Sora, calls out to the figure, revealing it to be Xion, allowing her heart to take over the Replica body her past self's heart was using, and allowing Axel to remember her as well. Xemnas prepares to slay both Xion and Sora, despite a pathetic attempt by Axel to stop him, but is stopped by Roxas himself, having gained a new body thanks to the Replica Program and the efforts of Ansem the Wise, Even, and Ienzo. Unimpressed, Xemnas is able to grab Kairi and escape with her before Sora can stop him, leaving Saix to deal with Sora, Xion, and Roxas.
At some point after Xemnas kidnapped her, Kairi was rendered comatose, before being summoned by Master Xehanort as Sora, Riku, and King Mickey faced off with him. Telling Sora he needed motivation to forge the χ-blade, Master Xehanort then mercilessly strikes Kairi across her back, causing her body to glow brightly before shattering into pieces, apparently killing her when no other method could to slay the Princess of Heart previously. Blinded by grief-stricken rage and heartbreak over Kairi's cold-blooded murder, Sora attacks Master Xehanort, but is easily repulsed. Riku, also enraged by Kairi's death, tries to attack, but is repulsed as well, and Mickey's attempt at an Ultima spell is blocked by Master Xehanort's Stopza. By the time the Wayfinder and Organization trios arrive, it appears they are too late as Master Xehanort forges the χ-blade and summons Kingdom Hearts to launch his endgame. However, deciding to use his control over time against him, Sora and the others blast Master Xehanort, allowing Sora to drag him into Scala ad Caelum to face him and defeat him once and for all. Before doing so, Sora is assured by Xion that Kairi is still alive as she could sense Kairi's heart and that she will be alright.
After Sora, Donald, and Goofy defeat Master Xehanort and he entrusts the χ-blade to Sora for safe keeping upon accepting defeat and realizing his mistakes, after Sora uses the χ-blade to close Kingdom Hearts for good, he prepares to track down Kairi and bring her home, despite the danger using the power of waking again to save her will have on his own heart and body, as Young Xehanort forewarned him earlier. As Sora works to rescue and restore Kairi, as he does, he soon has to help her face off with a illusionary version of Master Xehanort that carried the final pieces of her heart to restore her. Once Kairi is restored, Sora takes some time to take her to several other locations, such as picking up Chirithy from the Final World, before returning to the Destiny Islands to rejoin all their friends.
However, Sora then explains the consequences of his actions to Kairi, and she can only cry in heartbreak as Sora vanishes before her eyes to parts unknown as punishment for violating the Master of Masters' prophecy and misusing the power of waking.
After Sora disappears, Kairi works with Riku and the Fairy Godmother to figure out where he went, soon learning from the Nameless Star that Sora is in Quadratum. Riku heads there to get Sora back while Kairi decides to resume her training under the tutelage of Aqua.

I'm sorry I left without saying good-bye. Did Master Yen Sid tell you? I'm training to become a Keyblade wielder like you. That's right. No more waiting for you to come back from your adventures. I want to get out there and do my part to help. Merlin has used his magic to bring us to a place where time doesn't matter. We can take as long as we need to complete our training. He's an amazing wizard. Oh, and by "us," I mean me and Lea. He's really sorry for all the trouble he caused. I told him it's fine, but he won't stop apologizing. I'll admit I was a little scared of him at first, but I've gotten to know him better. All he ever wanted was to help his friend. Honestly, it's hard not to like him. Every now and then, I catch him staring at me. When I ask what's wrong, he says, "I'm not sure. I think I'm forgetting something. Don't know what." Sora, I think it may have something to do with you. Your journey is all about helping people: some that you've never met before, and some like Lea that you have. They're all counting on you. It won't be easy, but I hope you'll remain the happy and cheerful Sora I know. There's no heart your smile can't reach.
„
~ Kairi writing another letter to Sora before leaving.
“
Yeah. I know. I want to go with you. But...I know that I can't. I need to finish training. I need to become stronger. And when I do, I'll be right there next to you and Sora. But first I'll go explain everything to Donald and Goofy and to Mickey and Master Yen Sid.
„
~ Kairi telling Riku she intends to finish her training.
