Biography[]
Early Life[]
Kait Diaz was born on 20 A.E. on Tyrus, and is the daughter of former Gear soldier Gabriel Diaz, and stranded Reyna Torres, and is the niece of Oscar Diaz. Her mother was also the daughter of Myrrah, the former queen of the Locust Horde, who met her end by Marcus Fenix by the end of the Locust War and Lambent Pandemic. Gabriel and Reyna later founded Fort Umson, a community of people who refused the reorganized Coalition of Ordered Governments, and Kait was raised there.
As a child, her parents took her camping to teach her survival skills, and was later taught some engineering from her father. Around the age of ten, her was dying of Rustlung, and Kait became horrified of this, having dreams of her killing him to end his pain. Before his death, Reyna revealed the existence of Oscar, but he was disowned by the family for being reckless and a alcoholic. Before traveling to see his brother, Oscar had spent a couple of years recovering, but relapsed upon learning that his brother died before he made it to the fort.
Kait was later taught how to shoot and fight from Oscar, and learned more about engineering and mechanics from her father's books. In time, Oscar became a father figure to Kait, and Oscar became the second-in-command of the village after gaining Reyna's trust. As Kait became a young adult, she went on scavenging missions with her uncle, and often raided settlements that were walled COG cities built by DeeBees.
In 41 AE, the COG's reputation became worsened due to the massacre of Settlement 2, causing the Outsider's belief to become solidified, and made some civilians and soldiers abandon the COG and join the Outsiders. The two present at the incident were Marcus Fenix and Anya Stroud's son, former Lieutenant James Dominic "JD" Fenix and his best friend Delmont "Del" Walker, causing the two to abandon the COG. Though Reyna wanted to execute the two, Kait defended them, and they were allowed to become members of the Outsiders. Over the next six months, the three became close friends, and would help the village survive.
Gears of War 4[]
When raiding settlement five with Oscar, JD, Del, they are stopped by First Minister Mina Jinn and her DeeBees. The minister accuses them of kidnapping her people, but they are able to escape with a fabricator due to an unknown party destroying Jinn's robot. Returning to the village, Kait and the group help the Outsiders fight against Jinn's DeeBees, managing to protect the villagers and defeat Jinn's forces. Shortly after, the village was attacked by unknown creatures, which captured many people, including Reyna and Oscar. Kait, JD and Del managed to evade the creatures, whom Del considers were attacking like a "swarm". JD studied a severed crystalized arm of a creature that Reyna managed to cut off, and decided he and the others needed to see his father if they were going to rescue Reyna and the villagers.
Going to the Stroud estate, Kait meets JD's father, Marcus, who's still angry that his son joined the COG despite his telling him not to. Giving his father the severed arm, Marcus' realizes what it is, but the group are forced to fight against Jinn's forces. Marcus gifts Kait with his late wife's armor and weapons to fight against the DeeBees, and the group manage to leave the ruined estate, becoming fugitives. Going to Fort Reval, Marcus tells Kait, JD and Del that upon defeating the Locust, they buried them the Osmium mines, and their bodies became encased his unbreakable crystal cocoons. While investigating, Marcus is abducted by a Snatcher, and despite wanting to save her mother, Kait decides to aid JD in rescuing his father, feeling responsible due to bringing Marcus into this.
Kait and the group battle through waves of Swarm soldiers, and manage to rescue Marcus from being fully harvested. Marcus reveals that he felt the connection of the Swarm through a hivemind, and tells the group that the villagers are dead. After escaping the mine, Kait lashes at Marcus for wanting to regroup instead of saving her mother, and refuses to wait. JD and Del agree with Kait, and Marcus reluctantly decides to follow them. The group reach to the Tollen Dam, and are confronted by the Speaker, who they manage to defeat, and Kait executes him. Proceeding to the Speyer, Kait and company hold off against a Swarm attack after having a mostly peaceful talk with Jinn. After holding off the ambush, they meet with Marcus' backup, Damon Baird, Augustus Cole, and Samantha Byrne.
The team trek back through the dam to the abandoned city of Tellen, and Kait and JD battle several Swarmaks until they ecounter a Swarm creature at the site of the main nest. After a intense fight, they dismember the creature, and Kait enters the nest, finding her mother biologically entombed within the Swarm's biomass. Reyna tells her daughter that killing her will separate her form the Swarm's hivemind, and urges her daughter to cut her loss. Despite knowing that cutting her lose will kill, Kait tearfully cuts her mother from the Swarm's biomass, killing her. Afterward, Kait was comforted by her allies, and shows them the medallion that mother had given her, which belonged with her grandmother. The medallion is shaped like the icon of the Locust Horde, revealing her to be the granddaughter of Queen Myrrah.
Gears 5[]
Delta Squad travel to the ruins of Azura to restore an old superweapon network called the Hammer of Dawn. Shortly after their return to New Ephyra, First Minister Jinn directs them to assist the evacuation of COG Settlement 2. It is revealed during the battle that JD, Del, and Fahz had previously been deployed in Settlement 2 to quell a riot, which resulted in civilian deaths and prompted JD and Del to go AWOL, and that it was JD who gave Fahz the order to open fire on the civilians, causing Del and Kait to lose their trust in him. As the Swarm threatens to destroy the evacuation convoy, JD orders Baird to fire the Hammer of Dawn prematurely. While the Swarm forces are annihilated, the Hammer of Dawn malfunctions and begins firing wildly, severely injuring JD.
Four months later, Kait and Del go to an Outsider village located in the skeleton of the Riftworm to try to convince them to join the COG. The village chief, Kait's uncle Oscar, refuses, but they are suddenly attacked by the Swarm. Kait is captured by a Snatcher and experiences vivid visions of controlling the Swarm forces. She escapes the Snatcher but is unable to prevent Oscar's death which she witnesses through her visions. COG reinforcements then arrive to evacuate the village. Kait tells everybody about her visions, and Marcus recommends she head to the secret lab at New Hope to find answers, with Del joining her. At the lab, they find clues leading them to Mount Kadar, a former Locust stronghold.
Kait and Del reach another secret COG lab hidden beneath Mount Kadar. There, they find an AI construct of scientist Niles Samson, who explains that the Locust were the result of his experiments by hybridizing the DNA of Imulsion-infected children with the indigenous creatures of the Hollow. He also reveals that Queen Myrrah was a human immune to Imulsion, who could control the Locust due to her genetics being used to create them. However, when her newborn daughter Reyna, Kait's dead mother, was taken away by her father, Myrrah led the Locust to rebel against the scientists and gain their independence. Kait realizes that she is the next queen and demands to be separated from the Swarm's hivemind. Niles puts Kait in a special machine connected to a dormant Berserker called the Matriarch, which successfully severs Kait from the hivemind but also resurrects Reyna in the process, this having been Niles' true intention. Niles is destroyed by the revived Matriarch, and Kait and Del kill it before escaping the facility. Realizing that Reyna is now the Swarm's queen, Kait reaffirms the COG's need to reactivate the Hammer of Dawn.
A few weeks later, Baird takes the group to the Vasgar desert, where the Union of Independent Republics' secret space program was located. They meet Baird's former squadmate Garron Paduk, who reveals that the UIR had a rocket loaded with Hammer of Dawn satellites ready to launch. JD and Fahz arrive to help, with JD apologizing to Del and Kait for his previous deception and subsequent behavior. The squad manages to assemble and launch the rocket and acquire targeting beacons to help control the Hammer of Dawn, though they encounter a giant Swarm creature called the Kraken. The group escapes when Paduk picks them up in a Raven to fly them home.
At New Ephyra, Jinn attempts to arrest Kait, intending to forcibly connect her to the hivemind in order to find the central Swarm Hive. Before she can do this, however, the Swarm attacks New Ephyra. The Gears attempt to set up UIR targeting beacons to provide targeting data to the Hammer of Dawn, but the Kraken destroys them. The transformed Reyna appears and attacks Kait, JD, and Del, forcing Kait to choose to save either JD or Del, leaving Reyna to kill the other. Kait and the survivor fight their way back to their friends but are attacked by the Kraken. The remaining soldiers are soon overwhelmed until the squad's robotic companion, Jack, kills the Kraken by sacrificing itself as a targeting beacon for the Hammer of Dawn. In the aftermath, Marcus tells Kait that Reyna will return, with Kait remarking that they will find her first before discarding her mother's Locust necklace.
