Kaname Tanuma (田沼要, Tanuma Kaname) is a supporting character frim the anime and manga series Natsume's Book of Friends.
He is voiced by Kazuma Horie in the Japanese version and Tyson Rinehart in the English version.
Appearance[]
He has black hair and eyes. He is usually seen wearing the school uniform consisting of a white, collared t-shirt and grey pants.
Personality[]
He wants to help Natsume in any way he can, but is afraid that he will just be a burden because of his weak spiritual ability. He is sickly and quite susceptible to illnesses. Because of this, similarly to Natsume, he is pretty quiet and reserved much of the time, to the extent that when he initially met him and didn't know him very well, Natsume initially suspected him of being responsible for the recent exorcisms that were being done on yokai. However, once he learned it was actually his father's doing in a misguided attempt to keep his family safe, he quickly ends up connecting and befriending him. He is generally pretty mellow and easygoing when interacting with others.
Due to their fairly similar personalities, he and Natsume tend to get along especially well. In particular, due to his limited ability to sense youkai and awareness that they exist, he's something of a kindred spirit to him since this makes him one of the few people that can truly understand Natsume and the frequent stress he's under, as well as one of the few he can be at least comparably more honest and open with. He even helps him come up with convenient excuses he needs to make when he suddenly has to cancel plans with other people or otherwise get away from them for their safety to take care of some matter related to youkai or the supernatural in general.
Over time, he begins to develop a desire to be even more helpful to Natsume in a hands-on way, which would put the two at odds a little since Natsume was extremely afraid of anyone he cared aobut getting hurt for his sake. However, this determination would eventually lead him to risking his life to save him on a particular occasion when Natsume is captured by other youkai for the intention of being used as an offering to a much more powerful youkai at a banquet, after which he implored Natsume to be even more open with him about his problems so that he'd be sure not to unintentionally cause him more trouble. This also demonstrated that while he doesn't often talk about it, he's pretty self-conscious and insecure about his own social awkwardness. In the long-term though, this whole incident brought the two closer together since Natsume was all the more determined to take Natori's words to heart about not pushing away those closest to him and made him more inclined to disclose everything to him in future situations.
Plot[]
He is the son of a priest. He is another student that had recently moved into Natsume's school. He can sense the presence of yokai, albeit not to the same extent as Natsume. Though Natsume initially suspects him of being repsonsible for exorcising youkai in the local vicinity, after finding out this was actually his father and feeling guilty for suspecting him, the two quickly end up developing a friendship with each other, with Tanuma being one of his very few friends who knows his secret. While he only plays a notable role on certian occasions, he often plays a supporting role in whatever problem Natsume is trying to solve, with him even bailing him out of a couple of particularly sticky situations as a result.
Powers and Abilities[]
Like Natsume, he is able to detect spirits, but to a lesser degree that's limited to seeing merely shadows and sensing slight presence of spirits.
