I have guarded the Trident against false kings since the beginning, and for a thousand years, I have seen the greatest champions try and fail.
~ The Karathen.

The Karathen is a major protagonist of the 2018 film, Aquaman. She is a gigantic, ancient sea creature who served as the guardian for the trident of Atlantis in the hidden sea for thousands of years and later assisted Aquaman with his quest to prevent the war between the surface world and the sea.

She is voiced by Julie Andrews, who also played Mary Poppins in the 1964 film of the same name, Queen Lillian in the Shrek movie franchise and Marlena Gru in the Despicable Me film franchise.

History

Background

Long thought to be merely a creature of many legend, many Atlanteans believed that the Karathen served as the guardian beast of the ocean who would one day rise from the depths to signal Atlantis' uprising from its watery exile. In truth, however, she is actually real since she has been found deep within a pit behind a waterfall in the Hidden Sea. She has fought off false claimants of the Trident of Atlan ever since his death.

Aquaman

Years later, Arthur is able to find and convince her that he needs the trident to protect the people that he loves as well as the world of mankind. The Karathen relents to test his claim of ownership, but warns Arthur that she was only half of the initial trial and informs him if he should fail to grasp the trident, the result wouldn't be pleasant. After proving himself worthy of Atlan's legacy, they burst into battle together against Orm's fleet, backed by an army of all the ocean depths. As Aquaman is now Atlantis' monarch, the Karathen serves him.
