Karen Nelson (nee Strode) is the tritagonist of the 2018 horror film, Halloween (which acts as a sequel to the 1978 classic of the same name), and the deuteragonist of its 2021 sequel, Halloween Kills.
She is the daughter of Laurie Strode and mother of Allyson Nelson, who was trained at a young age to prepare for the return of Michael Myers. Though Karen moved on from her childhood to live a normal life, Karen found herself learning that Myers had return to Haddonfield to continue his killing spree.
She was portrayed by Judy Greer (who also played Miss Desjardin in the 2013 adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie, Cornelia in the Planet of the Apes trilogy, and also voiced Luna in Let's Go Luna!), and Sophia Miller young.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Karen Strode was born in 1981 to Laurie Strode and an unnamed man, whom the writers mention was a random man at a bar that Laurie had a one-night stand with. Though Laurie had been married twice, she would become divorce presumably due to her trauma from the Michael Myers incident. At a very young age, Laurie started to brutally train Karen if Michael ever returned to kill her, and also taught her daughter to use rifles and create traps. When she was twelve years old, Karen was taken into foster care after Laurie loss custody, and it's assumed that Karen was adopted into another family or was raised by Laurie's former two husbands. Karen would suffer from nightmares about her mother's basement, as it was filled with weaponry and reminded her of the training she received when she was young.
Karen remained estranged from her mother for years, and started to resent her due to the paranoia and fear Laurie instilled in her when she was young. Once she reached of age, Karen became a child psychologist, possibly doing so in a therapeutic way to help children who suffered from similar trauma. Eventually, Karen met a man named Ray Nelson in 2000, and the two started dating despite Laurie's protest, since Ray was two decades older than Karen.
The two would have a daughter together named Alyson in Haddonfield in 2001, and the two would marry a year later. Karen would meet her mother later on in her life, but still kept herself distant from Laurie, believing she needed therapy due to her trauma.
Halloween[]
Karen arrives home is nearly scared by her mother, who notes that her house doesn't have a security system. While attending a family diner with Alyson's boyfriend, Cameron Elam, Laurie arrives and suffers from a breakdown. After the incident, Karen tells Alyson about her past trauma with Laurie, as she was trained in survival skills and instilled with fear and paranoia.
On Halloween night, Michael Myers escapes from confinement and returns to Haddonfield to kill more people, and Ray is among the causalities. Karen reunites with Laurie and Alyson and encounters Myers, who attempts to murder Laurie in her bunker. When Michael breaks through the counter ceiling of the bunker, Karen pretends to breakdown to make Myers approach her, and then shoots him with her rifle. Laurie then attacks Michael after he was stunned, and Karen and Alyson assist Laurie in battling the Shape before escaping from the home. Laurie sets the bunker ablaze with Michael trapped there, and the three ride a pickup truck and embrace one another.
