She is portrayed by Jessie Wallace throughout her duration on the show.

Biography[]

Kat Slater is a member of the Slater Family that originally came to Albert Square, the market town of fictional East London borough Walford, in mid-September 2000. She is the daughter of Charlie Slater and his late wife Viv, and the sister of Lynne and Little Mo along with their supposed youngest sibling Zoe. Together, they settle themselves in Walford after being joined by their grandmother Mo Harris as well as Lynne's boyfriend Garry Hobbs.

In February 2001, the family are celebrating Zoe's 17th birthday when Kat gets upset and goes to her bedroom. Charlie goes to check on her and an argument erupts between them that ends with a shocking revelation - Zoe is not Charlie's daughter, she is actually Kat's daughter. It soon transpires that Kat gave birth to Zoe at the age of 13 but was forced to act as her eldest sister, with Charlie taking on the parental role in being Zoe's father in the process. A few months later, Kat is unhappy when Charlie's brother Harry Slater turns up in the square. She ends up avoiding Harry whenever the pair end up in the same place together.

In October 2001, Kat is unhappy to hear that Zoe is planning to leave the square and live with Harry in Spain just as he is planning to elope with her boss Peggy Mitchell. Thereafter an argument erupts that results in Zoe storming out and Kat chasing after her. The argument continues when Zoe tells Kat "You ain't my mother", to which Kat loudly responds "YES I AM!!". In that moment, Kat has just revealed to her sister Zoe that she is actually her mother. Kat goes back to calm herself down at the house while Zoe, shocked by the revelation, follows her to demand some answers. Despite initially wanting to change the subject, Kat eventually tells Zoe that she is her mother and explains about the events leading up to her pregnancy.

Zoe then demands that Kat tell him who is her father. Kat explains that she wanted to tell Charlie the truth but couldn't at the time. When Zoe asks why she couldn't tell Charlie at the time, Kat says to her "Because it was his brother - it was Harry". It thereupon becomes clear that Kat's uncle Harry is also Zoe's biological father; Kat explains to Zoe that she was sexually abused and raped by Harry as a preteen child until he eventually got her pregnant with a child, Zoe, back when Kat was 13-years-old". Shocked, Zoe reveals the truth to Charlie despite Kat's objections and he confronts Harry about it. Charlie then confronts Kat and she explains the truth about her and Harry, before further disclosing that Viv knew at the time but said nothing. Charlie then informs the rest of the family about the revelation.

Shortly afterwards, Kat wonders in the square alone and sees Harry preparing to leave the square after being disowned by Charlie for what he did in the past. Kat then plucks up the courage to confront Harry for what he did and they argue about their past, to which Kat tells Harry that he can no longer hurt her for what has happened and neither can he ever make out that it was all her fault. Kat then reveals to Harry that he got her pregnant with Zoe before admitting that she told Zoe the truth about what he did in the past - thus Zoe hates Harry for that. Harry responds by calling Kat a bitch, to which Kat reacts by taunting Harry as he gets into a taxi and leaves the square for good. It is then Kat becomes so upset that she cuts her wrists in a suicide attempt; she is rushed to hospital and survives in front of her family. Later on, Kat reconciles with Zoe over several circuimstances - including with the family learning that Harry died of a heart attack months later.

From then onwards, Kat starts to act as a parental figure to Zoe as the pair continue to settle with their family in Walford. The family are soon unhappy, however, when Little Mo reunites with her estranged husband Trevor Morgan and he starts to live in the square. It transpires that Trevor is a violent man who subjects Little Mo to domestic violence, and as such Kat is sworn enemies with Trevor because she hates him for beating up Little Mo and turning her against her family on multiple occasions. Trevor soon resumes his abuse towards Little Mo and rapes her on the night before Lynne marries Garry.

On New Year's Eve 2001, Trevor attempts to rape Little Mo again and she responds by attacking him with an iron in self-defense. Trevor survives the attack and retaliates by reporting Little Mo to the police for trying to kill him, thus implicating her as the abuser in their relationship. Kat resorts to defending Little Mo after finding out that Trevor raped her and attempts to get his mistress, Donna Andrews, to testify against him in court. However, this fails and Little Mo is wrongfully jailed for attacking Trevor on New Year's Eve 2001.

However, Kat is unwilling to stand by and let Trevor get away with it; she teams up with Little Mo's love interest Billy Mitchell to bring him to justice for his crimes. She eventually puts a plan in motion by offering to babysit Trevor's son behind his back. This works successfully when Kat's plan results in Trevor confronting and attacking Kat in her house, but it turns out to be a trap when the police arrive to arrest Trevor for assault. Kat and the family prepare to get Trevor imprisoned for his crimes when he offers to get Little Mo acquitted in exchange for the charges against him being quashed. Kat initially refuses to go through with his demands, but she ultimately relents upon seeing how Little Mo needs her family more than ever. In the end, Little Mo is acquitted and she reunites with her family. On Halloween Night 2002, Little Mo gets kidnapped by Trevor when he abducts Sean from Donna and beats her up; Kat rushes to Donna's aid before the family realize Little Mo is in trouble. It is then Trevor sets the house on fire in attempt to kill himself and Little Mo, along with Sean, in a suicide pact; however, Little Mo is rescued whilst Trevor is killed in the inferno. After Trevor's funeral, Kat reconciles with Little Mo when the latter resolves to moving forward from her horrific past.

In 2003, Kat gets acquainted with pub manager Alfie Moon. They start a relationship and fall in love with each other, but this is nearly threatened when Kat gets seduced by mobsman Andy Hunter after confronting him for giving Billy a hard time. Kat finds herself torn between Alfie and Andy, which results in the two men having a feud with each other. Andy soon proposes to Kat and she accepts. On their wedding day, however, Alfie disrupts the ceremony and pledges his love for Kat before urging her not to marry Andy. In the end, Kat jilts Andy when she chooses Alfie over his love rival. It is then Kat and Alfie plan on getting married, which they eventually end up doing on Christmas Day 2003.

In 2004, Kat finds herself in dire financial straits after Little Mo gets raped by her friend Grahame Foster and he sues Charlie in court for attacking him in revenge. Kat is forced to turn to Andy for help and he agrees in exchange for sleeping with him. She reluctantly accepts but is then forced to tell Alfie the truth about what happened. However, their relationship survives and Kat is relieved when Andy is later killed by his gangland rival Johnny Allen in February 2005.

In Summer 2005, Kat is shocked to learn that Zoe broke up with her boyfriend Dennis Rickman after she was forced to sleep with his illegitimate father Den Watts and the latter got her pregnant with an aborted unborn baby. Zoe then reveals to Kat about her involvement in Den's murder, but proclaims her innocence by revealing that Den was killed by his wife Chrissie Watts and that she implicated Zoe for the crime. Zoe later departs the square to avoid going to prison and Kat confronts Chrissie over everything that has happened. However, Chrissie is turn uses Zoe's cousin Stacey Slater as an alibi and proceeds to frame Billy's cousin Sam Mitchell for killing Den due to their family's all-out war with each other. Eventually, Kat and Stacey are forced to help expose Chrissie and she is arrested for the crime - though she doesn't mention Zoe's involvement in the end.

In December 2005, Kat finds her relationship with Alfie in trouble after his grandmother Nana Moon passes away. However, on Christmas Day 2005, they reconcile and depart the square to travel around the world.

Kat soon returns in 2010 with Alfie and the pair buy The Queen Victoria public house from Sam's brother Phil Mitchell. The couple then end up having many shenagains that include Kat's one-night stand with Alfie's cousin Michael Moon; an affair with their old acquaintance Derek Branning; and briefly reconciling their love for each other following Alfie's short-lived marriage with Phil's cousin Roxy Mitchell. However, the relationship soon ends when Kat finds out that Alfie got her relative Hayley pregnant. Kat soon begins a relationship with Phil and they nearly get married in September 2022, but then Alfie returns and resolves to win Kat over from Phil.
