Katara is one of the deuteragonists of the 2024 Netflix adventure fantasy series Avatar: The Last Airbender, based on the Nickelodeon 2005-2008 animated series of the same name.
She is the younger sister of Sokka and last Waterbender from the South Water Tribe who joins Aang to save the world from the Fire Nation.
She is portrayed by Kiawentiio as a teenager, and Meadow Kingfisher as a child in flashbacks.

Katara was born in the South Water Tribe to Hakoda and Kya and younger sister to Sokka. During a Fire Nation raid, Katara watched as a Fire Nation soldier killed her mother in front of her. After the raid, Katara's father left the tribe to fight in the war against the Fire Nation and she and Sokka were left to be raised by their grandmother, the matriarch of the Water Tribe. Due to most of the waterbenders being killed in the last Fire Nation raid, Katara remained the last one and practiced waterbending in private.
Season 1[]
Aang[]
After secretly waterbending at the abandoned Fire Nation shipwreck, Katara went to help Sokka go fishing until they were dragged by a stream of water to an iceberg. To avoid getting themselves stranded, she used her waterbending to drags their canoe back to them until Aang finally breaks free from an iceberg. She and Sokka later take him back to the Southern Water Tribe. The next morning, she and the others are witnessing Appa's arrival. After Aang became shocked as he realized about what happened a hundred years ago, Katara went to comfort him and tell him about how the Fire Nation attacked her home. While she succeeds in waterbending with Aang's help, they discover that the Fire Nation are on their way to the Southern Water Tribe and Katara has to escort him to safety. Sokka considers surrendering Aang to the Fire Nation, but Katara convinced him not to because it's their last hope. After Aang is taken away by the Fire Nation, she and Sokka went to take Appa with them and rescued him from the Fire Nation, thus forming the Team Avatar.
When the Team Avatar arrived at the Southern Air Temple, they were horrified about what happened a hundred years ago, especially seeing Gyatso's skeleton corpse which Aang has emotional breakdown so much that he triggers the Avatar State until he calms down before Katara hugs him in comfort. Later, she and Sokka are seen listening to Aang's decision of embracing his duty as the Avatar.
Warriors[]
When Aang suggests they should go to Kyoshi Island, Katara convinced Sokka not to leave him behind because they have to be there for him if they want to save the world. After they found a winged lemur in her bag, she found a waterbending scroll given by Gran-Gran for her to learn waterbending. Before they leave, she and Sokka watching Aang gave a proper burial for Gyatso. While they're setting off for the Kyoshi Island, Katara becomes happy that Momo joins with them.
When the Team Avatar first arrived at the Kyoshi Island, they were captured by the Kyoshi Warriors until it was stopped when the statue of Kyoshi flashing lights under Aang from its eyes before they were brought to Mayor Yukari. The next morning, Katara is seen practicing her waterbending and tried to offer Aang to teach him that. They later having fun splashing water at each other. While searching for the information about Kyoshi, Katara advised Aang to talk to her because all of the Avatar's past lives are inside of him. While Aang is meditating to talk to Kyoshi, Katara noticed the Fire Nation arrives at Kyoshi Island and tried to wake him up, but only forced herself to fight against Zuko. She almost got killed by Zuko until Aang (possessed by Kyoshi) went to save her.
Omashu[]
When Katara is struggling to waterbend, Aang advised her to tap into her feelings to be able to control her waterbending properly, but to no avail. While flying on Appa, the Team Avatar saw a young boy flying with his glider landing to Omashu, which is where they would go. When they got to the Omashu, they managed to get pass through the gate with the help of a turnip farmer. When they got up to the young boy, Aang realized he's not an airbender and the boy introduced himself as Teo. They also met Teo's father, a mechanist named Sai. Seeing many people are getting hurt by the bombings of the supposed firebenders, Aang decide to stay in Omashu to help people as the Avatar. While Aang and Teo flies up to the mountain and Sokka stays behind to help Sai, Katara spying on Sai talking to a Fire Nation spy and meets the turnip farmer again, who's revealed to be Jet.
When they got to the woods, Katara and Jet were encountered by the Fire Nation spy and his men and they fought against them until Jet's friends arrived for a help. At the Freedom Fighers' hideout, she and Jet were telling their respective tragic backstories which she was able to do the Water Whip correctly with the help of Jet. When she returns back to Sai's home, Katara tries to explain that Sai's the one who's behind the bombings, but Aang and Sokka refused to believe it because they already knew Jet's the true mastermind. Getting upset with Sokka's attitude, she storms out of Sai's house until she realized that Jet's actually the one who's behind the bombings and called him a "bad guy" for planning to kill the King of Omashu. She went to warn Aang and Sokka that Jet's planting a bomb on Sai. While on their way to stop Sai, the Team Avatar were stopped by Zuko. While Aang fought Zuko all by himself, Katara and Sokka went up to palace where she uses the Water Ship to stop the suitcase from exploding.
Into the Dark[]
She later returns to Sai's house to tell Sokka, Sai and Teo that Aang went missing. After Sai explained about what the Earth Kingdom prison is about, Katara was approached by Jet who tried to reasoned with her, but she refused and knocks him down before freezing him, leaving him trapped inside Sai's house. She and Sokka enters the secret tunnel where they met a singing nomadic minstrels and learns about the love story between Oma and Shu which led to creation of Omashu. In the tunnels, the two Water Tribe siblings are trying to find a way to the palace to rescue Aang and when they argued with each other, they were chased by a badgermole, where they realized it navigates through emotions. They later saved Aang and Bumi from getting crushed by a falling debris before the Team Avatar leaves Omashu.
Spirited Away[]
After they escaped from the Fire Nation soldiers while on the run, the Team Avatar has spotted a burned down forest that was already destroyed by the Fire Nation. Katara comforted Aang out of guilt by telling him about a life cycle. Team Avatar later met a young girl from a village where several people went missing including Shi-yong. Aang later agrees to help save the people.
When Team Avatar got to the forest where the shrine to the spirit is, Katara and Sokka are taken to the Spirit World as result of Aang's method through meditation. However, they were chased by an angry spirit named Hei Bai which gotten themselves separated. Katara later ended up at the Fog of the Lost Souls where she was taken back to the Northern Water Tribe when she witnessed her mother being killed by a Fire Nation soldier. She was later captured by Koh along with her brother Sokka and the villagers.

After Aang returns to the Spirit World to give the totem back to Koh, Katara and Sokka regains their conciousness after they were released from Koh's captive along with the others.
The North[]
The Team Avatar were arrived at the Northern Water Tribe where they were greeted by its people including Chief Arnook and Pakku. During the feast, Katara convinced Sokka to talk to Yue and Pakku told her she could be put under Yagoda's tutelage. The next morning, she was taught by Yagoda of using waterbending for healing and was later became upset of hearing that women weren't allowed to fight with waterbending, so she confronts Pakku over this. She later challenged Pakku for a fight where she lost to him and Pakku refused to teach him, but only for her to gain praise from many male waterbenders.
Legends[]
After Team Avatar managed to ambush the Fire Nation ship, they realized how much army they've need to take down. During the battle against the Fire Nation, Katara managed to convinced Pakku to let her and the other women join the fight. Later that night, Zuko breaks into Kuruk's temple to capture Aang, which Katara challenges him for a fight where she managed to gained the upperhand on him unlike their previous encounter before. However, she later loses her waterbending due to Zhao already killed the Moon Spirit before she almost getting crushed by a falling debris. After she regained her conciousness, Katara became shocked of seeing Aang in a form of Koizilla. Following the aftermath of the battle, Katara rejects Pakku's offer to become a waterbending master at the Northern Water Tribe to continue help Aang in his journey.
Personality[]
Katara is a kind, caring, and selfless young woman. She is determined to learn waterbending and successfully protect Aang. Katara believes in him and knows he can save the world. She also wears a necklace that belonged to her mother and her grandmother.
Powers and Abilities[]
Waterbending[]
Katara used to have minimal training in waterbending due to having to hide her abilities because if anyone found out, she would be killed. By the Siege of the North, she was able to matter waterbending and successfully held her own against Prince Zuko until General Zhao killed the Moon Spirit and she temporarily lost her waterbending powers. However her waterbending returned when Princess Yue sacrifice her own life by returning the portion of the moon spirit's essence and thus reviving the spirit and restoring the moon. By the end of the first season, Katara has everything she needs to know about waterbending and takes it upon herself to become Aang's waterbending master.
Katara learned how to bend water into ice. After seeing how Earthbenders used the Earth to throw rock disks, Katara used waterbending skills and hurled ice disks at her enemies. She can also trap her enemies by using Icebending to trap Prince Zuko in an ice casing.

Trivia[]
- Katara's worst memory is the day that the Fire Nation attacked and killed her mother.
- In the Netflix series, Katara is two years younger than Sokka due to him being sixteen. In the original series they were only a year apart, with Sokka being fifteen and Katara being only fourteen.
- In the live-action series, Sokka and Katara go through the tunnels of Omashu to rescue Aang from captivity. In the original cartoon, Team Avatar goes through the tunnels so they can get Aang to Omashu while seeking Bumi to be his Earthbending teacher.
- Also unlike the series, Katara doesn't narrate the beginning, Kyoshi does.
