Katrielle "Kat" Layton is the main protagonist of Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy. She is Professor Hershel Layton's adoptive daughter, who runs a detective agency in London, assisted by Ernest Greeves, a young man who harbors romantic feelings for her, and an amnesiac dog that only her and Ernest can understand, who she names "Sherl". While solving various mysterious around London, she is attempting to also locate her missing father as well as undercover the truth behind Sherl and his past. She is well respected across London, and particularly is employed by Scotland Yard on occasion to aide with their investigations. She is on particularly friendly terms with Detective Inspector Hastings.
At the end of the game she has still not found out the truth about Sherl or located her missing father. However she claims to have solved a riddle that he set her before he left: "If you're not really my child, then who exactly are you?", resulting in the game's cliffhanger.
Personality[]
Katrielle is a skilled detective with a highly accurate gut instinct, who relies a lot on what she calls her "miraculous instincts" when solving cases. This combined with how strange most of her conclusions sound causes her investigative methods to comes under critique by a number of people, including Emiliana Perfetti, for seemingly being nothing but flimsy guess work. Nevertheless, she is always correct, using a combination of her "miraculous instincts" and reasoning resulting from various clues, to come to the correct truth behind a case.
Despite wishing to often help others, Katrielle can be a rather selfish person, particularly towards her assistant Ernest, who acts as her dogsbody willingly due to his feelings for her. She dislikes work, and seems to be particularly adamant about relinquishing any trivial tasks to Ernest, even to the point of requesting him to read stuff out loud for her. This has seemingly become instinctive, as shown when she went to ask him to do as such once, before realizing he wasn't with there. She also has a large appetite, being able to put away several meals, and constantly thinking about food even during cases.
