This has always been my dream, it’s not like being just an ordinary cop. You get out there, you get something different all the time. You’re living by your wits. Y’know, you feel that charge.
~ Kaye telling Angie Piper why she always wanted to join the Undercover unit.

Constable Kaye Kelso, also known by her real name Emily Shaw, is one of the main characters of Stingers. She is a fairly young but optimistic new recruit of the Undercover unit of Victoria Police, who despite her inexperience as a rookie, is more than willing to take the opportunity to go on the field to take down criminals. However, her enthusiasm for working in Undercover soon leads to her life being changed forever.

She served as a tetartagonist in season one.

She is portrayed by Jessica Napier.

Notable storylines[]

Kaye is a recent recruit into the Undercover unit at the start of the series, and is introduced to Peter Church prior to their briefing into investigating the Gallagher family, whom Church and Angie Piper are tasked with investigating over the disappearance and possible murder of a teenage girl. During the investigation, Kaye mostly works in surveillance detail with Oscar Stone. When Angie is kidnapped by Gerry Gallagher, Kaye and Ellen MacKenzie storm the Gallagher household looking for her, before hearing from Church that he rescued Angie from Gerry.

Kaye soon goes on undercover duty for the first time, when she is paired with former Undercover operative Nick Torris, posing as his girlfriend as they plan a weapons deal with a young Romanian gang led by Mikail Menduso, in order take him and his gang down for killing a cop. Kaye finds out before the sting that Nick's partner Chris was killed 3 years prior, and he is also concerned for Kaye's safety due to her being inexperienced. However, Kaye manages to impress Nick during their first meeting with Mikail when she rushes to save him after Mikail has Nick attacked when he tries to speak to him, ultimately saving both their covers and Nick from any harm, allowing them to meet with the gang the following day on seemingly friendlier terms, as Nick claims that he's looking for some work. However, Kaye is forced to stay behind with Mikail's brother Jacek when Mikail takes Nick for a drive, and manages to sneakily take back Nick's phone shortly after it's confiscated by Mikail, allowing her to inform Mac to tail their car. Kaye then gets a call from Mac to let her know that they're getting her out of there. At the same time, however, Nick panics and flees from the gang when he's ordered by Mikail to kill somebody, putting the sting in jepoardy. However, Kaye convinces Bernie Rocca to let her go back to meet with Mikail to get things back on track, despite Mac's concerns that it's too dangerous. Kaye later shows up to Mikail's bar with the false pretense of confronting him over Nick's disappearance, before being told by Mikail that he's still interested in the deal that was planned, this allows Church to join Kaye in the operation as the buyer. Kaye and Church later find out that Mikail and his gang plan to rob the weapons factory owned by Jon Stanca, who was also the sole witness to Mikail murdering the cop when they earlier tried to rob his house. Kaye and Church later meet with Mikail, and they enter his car to find Stanca there as well, on the drive to Stanca's factory, he and Mikail argue before Mikail mentions the fact that he and his gang killed a cop, which is recorded on Kaye's wire. They later arrive to the factory, where Mikail tells Stanca to stay in the car while he conducts his deal with Kaye and Church, but Stanta refuses, telling Mikail that he can't help him anymore. Mikail tries to shoot Stanca, but Kaye tackles him to the ground as he shoots his gun, missing Stanca, and allowing Angie and Stone to arrive to arrest Mikail and his associate. Following the arrest of the Mikail and his gang, Kaye gets some praise from Mac and Rocca for her inititive, before they, along with the rest of the unit, surprise her with a party for her initiation sting being a massive success.

When Undercover is tasked with setting a sting operation to catch a serial killer who has been targeting young blonde women, Kaye volunteers herself as the bait to catch the killer, but Mac decides against this and instead sends Angie undercover, with Church and Stone as backup. Kaye later tells Angie her excitement about working in Undercover as well as wanting to get back in field operation, despite being warned by Angie that one mistake is enough for an operative to be seriously hurt, or worse. When Angie blows her cover after she attacks potential suspect Sammy Vincenza for sleazily making a pass toward her, Kaye asks Mac to let her take over from Angie. However, Kaye disappears shortly after getting attacked, with Church only able to find her walkie-talkie.

The unit goes into damage control following Kaye’s disappearance, with Angie and Church feeling the most guilt-ridden. It is later revealed that fellow police officer Constable Jerry Staughton was responsible for attacking and kidnapping Kaye, along with the murders of the other women, but thanks to a blunder by the Homicide unit, they are forced to release him, prompting an angry Church to take over and tail Staughton. While Angie and Stone find the factory where Staughton supposably killed his victims.

Kaye is eventually found mutilated but barely alive by a distraught Angie, who tells the rest of the rescue team to call an ambulance for Kaye. Mac later tells Church that Kaye’s been found, giving them both the chance to attack and arrest Staughton for Kaye’s attempted murder, along with the murders of the other three women. Bernie later tells the rest of the unit that Kaye is going to recover from her injuries, but will not be returning to Undercover, before saying that whether Kaye remains a cop or not is up to her. Despite hearing the news that Kaye is recovering, the unit remain devastated (particularly Mac, who breaks down in tears) due to the fact that she nearly died on their watch.
