Choose or Die
Kayla works at facility as a cleaner in order to provide for her mother, Thea, who became a drug addict after the death of her younger brother, Ricky while at the same time, her mother is in an abusive sexual relationship with her drug dealer and landlord, Lance. She also works in order to provide a living while she learns how to code by her best friend, Isaac, in order to get into the career of being a game programmer.
Eventually, she and Isaac encounter CURS>R and it offers anyone who beats the game $125,000 for it. Later that night, she accepts the challenge at a local café, revealing the game's power as she sees the waitress being forced to break multiple glass cups before swallowing a glass shard. Kayla attempts to save her but fails, resulting in the waitress dying from blood loss. She tells this to Isaac but becomes skeptical. The next night, Kayla is working the graveyard shift when Thea calls her to tell her she is in danger before CURS>R activates in the building, making Kayla play a game in which she must save her mother from a swarm of rats. Kayla causes Thea to jump out of the building's window, severely injuring her.
Kayla goes to Isaac for answers on how to beat this thing, causing him to look through the game's codes to discover it's being activated with an unknown set of symbols. The discovery of the codes teleports Isaac and Kayla to be teleported to a game where she must choose to save an either zombified, resurrected or hallucination of Ricky, or save Isaac. She ultimately saves Isaac, causing Ricky to jump up and attack Kayla, resulting in her strangling Ricky.
The discovery of the codes being a curse leads them to a storage room in which they watch a tape of game developer, Beck, explaining the mysterious game before he tests it on a test subject in which he forces to bite his own arm in order to test Beck being healed from another person's pain. This also leads Kayla to discover that the game is in control of another person. The game then traps Isaac for cheating due to him searching in the codes and causes him to throw up recorder tape. Kayla is forced to make the decision between reversing the VCR in order to save Isaac or to fast forward, which would kill him but lead her to the final level. Isaac sacrifices himself, telling Kayla to move forward, resulting him dying as a result. This leads to Kayla to go to the final boss, which is revealed to be Hal himself, who has turned into an abusive husband towards his wife, Laura and son, Gabe. Revealing he was the one who controlled the game.
The two fight, revealing that every time Kayla is gets hit, Hal gets hurt and vise versa. The fight culminates between the two, with Laura attempting to kill Hal but failing. After running out of bullets, Hal attempts to slit his own throat in order to kill Kayla but she throws herself in the pool, causing Hal to suffocate and die from drowning. Laura saves Kayla, giving her the idea to use the game to kill Lance and free her mom from the man.
She decides to dedicate herself to using the game to fight wrong-doers, with Beck calling her personally to ask her who is she going to target before responding with people who deserve it.
