The Kazama Style exists to protect the well-being of those precious to you.
~ Jun Kazama

The Kazama Family are the overarching protagonists of the Tekken franchise. They are a clan of spiritual fighters that task themselves with purifying evil from the world.

History[]

The Kazama family are originally from Yakushima Island, where they developed their own family martial arts style. They seem to be attuned to nature, and their martial arts style also emphasizes countering and redirecting an opponent's energy rather than a more aggressive approach. A wing of the Kazama family live in Osaka, where Kazama Ryu is also taught in a Kazama family run dojo.

Jun Kazama left Yakushima to work in Tokyo for the W.W.W.C., an animal protection organization. Disillusioned by city life in Tokyo, Jun saw her dead father's spirit, which renewed her faith in the supernatural. She made it her mission to stop the corrupt animal trading and experimentation practiced by the Mishima Zaibatsu, and later also wished to try and save its CEO, Kazuya Mishima, from a darkness she felt within him. After the events of Tekken 2, she returned to Yakushima, where she raised her and Kazuya's son, Jin, for fifteen years until she was attacked and disappeared. Jin left Yakushima after the attack, and went to live with his grandfather on the Mishima estate, in mainland Japan, likely not far from Tokyo. Four years later, Jin was betrayed by his grandfather, and fled to hide and train in Brisbane, Australia.

He returned to Japan to fight in the next King of Iron Fist Tournament, and briefly returned to his native Yakushima afterwards. He took over the Mishima Zaibatsu after winning the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament, and lived in Tokyo until he mysteriously disappeared after a fight with the demon Azazel in the Middle East. After being rescued from trouble, he was cared for and protected whilst he was in a coma by his uncles, Lee Chaolan, and Lars Alexandersson.

A branch of the Kazama family live in Osaka, where Mr. Kazama (to-date unnamed) has a dojo and teaches Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts, and his daughter, Asuka helps out. Asuka is also known in the city for her role in breaking up street fights between rival gangs. At one point, the dojo was attacked by Feng Wei, and Mr. Kazama was hospitalized by him. As of Tekken 7, the Osaka dojo has still not recovered and Mr. Kazama's reputation, health, and livelihood are still in jeopardy.

Members[]

Jun Kazama[]

Conceived a child with Kazuya Mishima. She is the mother of Jin Kazama, and a relative of Asuka Kazama and Asuka's father.

Jin Kazama[]

The son of Kazuya Mishima and Jun, grandson of Heihachi and Kazumi, great-grandson of Jinpachi, half-nephew of Lars and Reina, and adoptive nephew of Lee. He started as a kind boy with his mother Jun Kazama, mastering the Kazama Style Fighting Karate at Yakushima. On his fifteenth birthday, however, believing that his mother was killed at the hands of Ogre, he began to seek revenge on the creature, under his grandfather Heihachi's teachings before he was betrayed and shot by Heihachi. Heihachi's betrayal awakened Jin's Devil Gene and attacked him. After regaining his senses, he showed hatred against the Mishima bloodline until the spirit of Jun ordered her son to spare Heihachi. Jin defeated Jinpachi in the final stage and took over as the new head of the Mishima Zaibatsu.

As the head of the Zaibatsu, he declared war against the world filled with negative energy in order to awaken and destroy Azazel, the original Devil Gene progenitor. Jin suddenly disappeared when Heihachi regained his role as the head of the Mishima Zaibatsu before he was killed by Kazuya. After Heihachi's death at the hands of Kazuya, Jin finally defeated his father, seemingly ending the curse of the Mishima bloodline by following Jinpachi's pacifistic footsteps instead of a malicious footsteps of his father and his grandfather.

He has been the main protagonist of these games. He was introduced as the main protagonist of Tekken 3 and Tekken 4, one of the two main protagonists (alongside his father Kazuya) of Tekken 5, the main antagonist of Tekken 6, the supporting character of Tekken 7, and later returns as the main protagonist of Tekken 8. He is the only Kazama with the Devil Gene and is the human-counterpart of Devil Jin and its purified form, Angel Jin.

Asuka Kazama[]

Daughter of Mr. Kazama, a relative, likely niece, of Jun Kazama and cousin to her son.

Mr. Kazama[]

Father of Asuka Kazama, a relative, likely brother, of Jun and uncle of Jin Kazama.

Jun's Father[]

Jun's father and Jin's maternal grandfather. He is unnamed and mentioned once. He is dead, but his spirit visited Jun before Tekken 2, reigniting her faith in the supernatural after she had become disillusioned in Tokyo.

Quotes[]

Jin: What, Mother?
Jun: Listen up, Jin. The Kazama Style exists to protect those precious to you.
Jin: Got it! Then I'll just protect you!
~ Jun to Jin in the flashback.
Asuka: So this Jun lady is Jin's mom?
Lili: Indeed. Although, the branch of the Kazama clan was wiped out seven years ago, when Yakushima came under assault. Jun Kazama was never heard from again...
Jin: The ogre... It killed my mother, burned the forest, and took everything from me.
Xiaoyu: (flabbergasted) No way...
~ Jin about Ogre seemingly killed Jun seven years ago.
Xiaoyu: Riddle me this, Jin. What'd you wanna grow up to be when you were little? My dream was to open a big ole amusement park, and run the whole show! That way, I could bring happiness to people from all over the world.
Jin: Everyone in the world, huh? That's some ambition you've got there. Still, I could get behind that.
Xiaoyu: What about you, Jin?
Jin: Me? Can't say I really ever had a dream. Protecting my mother and the beauty of Yakushima, that was enough. That's all I'd hoped for. (Xiaoyu gasps in amazement.) Mother and I always sparred together here. After practice we'd sit together and eat the packed lunch my mom made...
~ Jin explaining his dream to Xiaoyu at Yakushima.
Jun: Jin... Don't give up on yourself. You've grown so strong, Jin.
Jin: Mother...? But this isn't enough. If I don't get stronger, then my existence has no meaning!
Jun: You're a kind boy. Always putting yourself second, I imagine. But you know that also runs the risk of causing pain to others. The Kazama Style exists to protect the well-being of those precious to you. Your own life is well worth protecting. Don't you forget it.
Jin: Mother... Do I have the right to desire life?
Jun: A Kazama's power fosters life, and cleanses evil. Use that power to save yourself... and Kazuya. Jin... Go forth, sweetheart.
~ Jin in his subconscious.
For that which I believe in! And for the ones who believe in me! I'll defeat you, and protect everyone!
~ Jin fighting Kazuya in outer space.
This is all the power I have! Together with your Devil and Azazel's power... I will crush your delusions of grandeur!
~ Jin to Kazuya.
The inner strength my mother taught me... And the Kazama clan's skills... I shall use my all to stop you!
~ Jin fighting Kazuya while using the Kazama Style Fighting Karate.
Jin: A... fight... A fight... is about survival.
Kazuya: You just don't know when to quit...!
Jin: (These feelings gave me the courage to survive.)
Kazuya: (irritated) Preposterous!
Jin: If it means living on with everyone... I'll get back on my feet as many times as it takes!
Kazuya: Your refusal to quit is almost admirable. Even so, this match has already been decided!
Jin: No longer will I deny my past... No longer will I deny my comrades and our bonds... I... I WANT TO LIVE!
Kazuya: (greatly infuriated) BREAK, DAMN YOU!
~ Jin's speech about his determination to survive.
With that, the devil's blood is gone from the world.
~ Jin, believing that the influence of the Devil Gene is finally gone for good after defeating Kazuya.
Thank you, Mother. (I'm sure we'll meet again.) Let's head back. Everybody's waiting for us.
~ Jin thanking his mother for everything she taught him.

Trivia[]

  • Kazama consists of the kanji for "wind" (風 kaze) and "interval" (間 ma) and collectively, they mean "while the wind blows." Kazama is a real Japanese surname that is currently in use.
  • Before the Devil Gene was revealed as a factor influencing the Devil in Kazuya, it was conceptually only a spiritual matter. Likewise, the Kazama 'power' was a spiritual influence that Jun exclusively had, and represented her fight along with Angel for the better part of Kazuya's soul.
