Biography[]

Background[]

Kenji is fifteen years old and appears to come from a very rich family, as he states that he lives in a mansion that is equipped with a bowling alley. However, his father is very distant, and apparently spends most of his time with his girlfriend, Candy. Unlike most of the other campers, Kenji has visited the park several times, claiming to have a familiarity with the workings of Jurassic World. Among his claims are that his father owns a condominium unit on the Island.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous[]

Season 1[]

Kenji was the last of the campers to arrive at Isla Nublar's North Dock, choosing to show up in a private helicopter rather than the Ferry with everyone else. He would meet the other kids that would be attending the camp alongside him: Darius Bowman, Brooklynn, Yasmina Fadoula, Sammy Gutierrez, and Ben Pincus. The group was greeted by camp counselors Roxie & Dave. On the drive into camp, the group encountered an escape Compsognathus that leaped onto Darius and scared Kenji. As the sunset that evening the campers were taken to the zipline. In the paddock below, park employees had begun herding a group of herbivores to their night-time enclosures. To impress Brooklynn, Kenji misidentified the Brachiosaurus as a Brontosaurus. Darius would correct him. Taking his turn, Kenji glided down the zipline, observing the Brachiosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Stegosaurus, Parasaurolophus, and Sinoceratops below.

Later that night, Kenji caught a desperate Darius who was trying to sneak out and find the Compsognathus paddock. He, along with Brooklynn, accompanied Darius to the paddock. The three of them entered the paddock they believed housed the Compsognathus, not realizing it was in fact the Raptor Paddock. Showing off, Kenji accidentally dropped Brooklynn's phone into the paddock, then climbed in to retrieve it. Observing the stripped bones in the paddock, and rustling from the foliage, Darius realized that this was in fact not the Compsognathus Pen and tried to alert Kenji. The Velociraptor Blue emerged from the bushes startling Kenji. Brooklynn located a control panel and attempted to open the paddock's exterior gates, but instead opened the ones on the interior exposing Kenji to the Velociraptor. Darius kicked open a steam pipe from above, flooding the area with a distracting mist then dropped into the paddock to assist his fellow camper. Things did not go according to his plan however as the steam shut off and fellow raptors Echo, Delta, and Charlie formed up behind their leader. With their backs against the wall, the pair nearly fell prey to Blue but were pulled to safety by Dave with only moments to spare.

While awaiting their punishment from Dave and Roxie, Kenji opened up to Darius about being on his last chance with this Father. Darius then took responsibility for the incident, surprising both Dave and Roxie. As punishment for their reckless behavior, both Darius and Kenji were excluded from a trip to one of the park's satellite Research Facilities, instead of being left behind to shovel dinosaur dung. Unenthused with their assignment, Kenji convinced Darius to abandon their work and follow him through the Maintenance Tunnels to the park's Quarantine Paddock. Emerging into the jungle, Darius and Kenji continued to the paddock's perimeter. Observing the fence, Darius questions Kenji's knowledge of the park and whether or not they were on the right side of the fence. Realizing Darius might be correct, the pair worriedly looked into the jungle behind them as Toro the Carnotaurus stealthy approached them from behind.

Taking off into the jungle, Darius advised Kenji that they should run in a zig-zag pattern, evading the Carnotaur's poor turning ability. Making it back to the fence ahead of the dinosaur, Kenji dove through a small opening inside the fence used for feeding. Darius attempted to follow but became trapped as one of the gates jammed shut. Unable to make it budge, Kenji hurriedly grabbed a fallen tree branch using it as leverage to pop the gate open and free Darius with only a moment to spare. As the Carnotaur slammed into the fence behind them, hurting its snout, the pair called out taunts. Both Darius and Kenji were able to return to their shoveling duties just before the others arrived back at camp, none the wiser.

The following day, the campers gathered out in one of the herbivore paddocks where they would be driving Gyrospheres. Kenji looked forward to driving, however, Roxie denied him the opportunity and paired him with Ben. He was not happy with that as Ben was a slow and overly cautious driver. Inside the Gyrosphere, Kenji grew increasingly frustrated with Ben's ability to drive. A storm began to form overhead, and the radio contact between the counselors and the other park workers became intermittent. Leaving the campers at a safe distance from the herd, Dave and Roxie drove off to inform the park workers that they would be pulling out of the cattle drive. Seeing a rogue Sinoceratops running away from the herd, Darius decided to ignore their instructions and persuaded his fellow campers to use their Gyrosphere to try and herd the animal back towards the rest of the herbivores. During this chase, Kenji would take over as the driver, and the two argued over the control. Despite Sammy's attempts to rein the group in, Darius's overconfident attitude led to his Gyrosphere getting butted by the Sinoceratops and thrown back into the rest of the herd, causing a stampede. Escaping into the jungle, Kenji and Ben raced through the trees before they crashed and wrecked the vehicle. The two walked until they were picked up by Sammy and Yasmina where the four of them were crammed into the small vehicle. Upon reaching the Gyrosphere of Darius and Brooklynn, Kenji and Yasmina attempted to move the Gyrosphere however they were not strong enough. Using the Sinoceratops to pull the Gyrosphere out of the mud, Kenji monitored the vines from atop a tree.

Kenji and the other campers waited impatiently for the counselors to come back. Kenji watched Brooklynn, Yasmina, and Sammy argue over Brooklynn's stolen phone arrogantly before a distant roar interrupted them. Wondering what it was, Darius convinced the others to go to the Observation Tower to see if they can spot the source of the noise. While on the tower, they spotted a lone Brachiosaur and two panicked park workers that were trying to convince them to get back inside. They watched the Indominus rex kill both the Brachiosaur and the park workers. As the Indominus rex tried to take down the tower, Darius and the others escaped via the zipline to the forest floor and successfully evaded the hybrid. The children returned to the camp to find it in ruins. Kenji argued with Ben as he was frustrated with Ben's overly cautious nature as Yasmina, Brooklynn and Sammy argued over the stolen phone, Darius stepped up and gave an inspiring speech. He then took charge to lead them across the island to find help.

As the group of survivors made their way through the jungles of Isla Nublar, they found themselves at Gray and Zach's broken-down Gyrosphere and they met up with Bumpy, the baby Ankylosaurus from the genetics lab they visited prior. Eventually, they reached an ACU vehicle that Kenji drove as he volunteered for it. The group was chased by the Indominus rex once again but they managed to escape and take refuge inside the Genetics Lab. Upon entering, they encountered Eddie, one of the Scientists who had been left behind. When Darius mentioned they have a vehicle, Eddie ran outside and stole the van. The children watched helplessly as the Indominus Rex attacked the van and killed Eddie. The predator then turned its attention to the children and searched for them. They managed to reach the van and escape from the Indominus rex once again. As they drove away, the van crashed upon the realization that Sammy actually stole the phone and the campers were forced to continue on foot.

Kenji spotted and recognized Simon Masrani's Helicopter. Cheering him on, he and the other campers followed the helicopter to watch it fail to take down the Indominus rex. Having witnessed Simon Masrani's death and the escape of the Pteranodons, Kenji and the other campers took cover inside the cave that housed the River Adventure attraction. Once inside, they climbed into the kayaks and paddled through the underground river toward the Jurassic World Lagoon. During the trip down the river, Brooklynn continued to complain about Sammy until Kenji stepped in and reminded her that being mad at Sammy won't fix their situation and that she should try to be a little nicer with her. After narrowly avoiding death at the jaws of the Mosasaur, the children took refuge in the bleachers next to the Jurassic World Lagoon. As they rested, an alarm blared through the park and informed the Park Attendees to head for the Ferry. As the kids tried to come up with a plan to get to the southern docks, they were interrupted by a Monorail that was pulling into the station at Main Street. As they tried to get to the monorail, they encountered Toro. With Darius's quick thinking, he, Brooklynn, and Kenji made it to the top of the stairs as Ben, Bumpy, and Yasmina slowly made their way up. While Darius went back to help them, Kenji held open the doors by standing between them.

Just as they thought they were safe aboard the monorail, a flock of Pteranodons ambushed them. During the attack, Ben had fallen out off, despite Darius's attempt to save him. Things only got worse as Darius realized they have headed back toward the North due to the track change that occurred earlier. The kids jumped off the monorail and lost Bumpy in the process. Without any time to spare, Darius had the idea to cut through the Underground Tunnel to get to the Ferry. While they were underground, the campers got lost as most of the tunnels had been locked down. Upon finding a cattle prod, Kenji took it and tried to hit a door with it, only to shock himself. As they traveled, the campers encountered Toro once again. They managed to run away and reach the end station of an underground track. Realizing the door was locked and they had nowhere else to go, Toro was getting closer. The children used gas canisters to create an explosion that left the Carnotaur badly burned.

Having defeated Toro, Kenji and the survivors finally reached the dock. Unfortunately, they had been left behind. With no sign of help coming any time soon, they return to seek shelter within the island interior.

Personality[]

At first, Kenji comes across as a spoiled and haughty yet simple-minded teenager. However, it later turns out that this attitude serves to hide and compensate for his personal insecurities that he feels very lonely as a rich man's son and doesn't see his father much. On the island, he is also lazy and stays away from the work that must be done for the group to survive. But as the series progresses, he's genuinely keen to help and wants to be helpful while still keeping a slight arrogant side, which is shown when he repeatedly brags about being the leader of the group.

In the fifth season Kenji finds himself conflicted in his loyalty to his friends and his father, but eventually sides with his father as Daniel manipulated him to think he is not the bad guy by also using Kenji's dream to be a bigger part of his fathers life and turn Kenji against his friends. Kenji is also first unable to realize that his father only shows him affection and love just to keep him by his side and only approves of him when he helps with Daniel's goals and make money for him. Kenji is shocked when Daniel hires his old enemy the mercenary Hawkes to work for him as a safety escort, but just thinks his dad is to credulous. He later helps his father to capture Toro the Carnotaurus who he start to form a bond with. However after getting advices from doctor Mae Turner shortly after his father scolded him after a failed try to capture the raptor Blue Kenji starts to realize that his dad only shows him love when he manages to get money for him and starts to become suspicious if he really has made the right choice or if his friends was right. After seeing that his dinosaur friend the Ankylosaurus Bumpy has been captured and putted under mind control despite earlier beging his father to not do it makes it Kenji truly realize that his friends was right about that his father is the bad guy and turns against Daniel as he helps Mae Turner escape Daniels control. Later back at Mantah Corp Island Kenji learns that his friends manages to escape. He decides to rejoin them and correct his mistakes. When he discovers Ben who wants to save Bumpy Ben tackles him to the ground asking how Kenji could allow Daniel to mind control Bumpy. Kenji swears that he tried to stop it, but Ben is hesitant to trust Kenji again despite the later admits that he should have listen to his friends warnings and how sorry he is for not supported them. Ben however forgives Kenji after he proves to be sincere by risking his life to help save Bumpy from her mind control. Kenji was really happy with Brooklyn, but he decided to end their relationship because she was neglecting him and becoming distant. When Brooklyn passed away he was heartbroken and blamed Darius for not being there. He even stopped talking to him after the incident. When Darius confessed to Kenji about his love for Brooklyn he was at first shock, but then accepted it and supported him. As the mission progresses Kenji and Darius relationship starts to heal and become close again. During his mission to find The Broker, Kenji has been acting reckless and somewhat suicidally and constantly endangering himself without thinking. For example, he ran towards fire, jumped in the ocean, grabbed Brooklynn’s phone in a hippos mouth, ran towards a rampaging brachiosaurus herd and monolophosaurus pack. It could be a possibility that he’s somewhat mentally unwell due to the many losses he’s had (his mother, father and) thankfully Yasmina talked to him and is slowly getting better.

Trivia[]

  • Even though he is a protagonist, Kenji is indirectly responsible for the campers getting attacked by the dinosaurs in the first place such as convincing the group to follow the I. rex's noises, getting himself and Darius on the wrong side of Toro's paddock, and indirectly releasing the Scorpios rex which also poisoned Sammy.
    • In Hidden Adventure, he can get Darius killed twice, first if he chooses to run rather than keep hiding, leading to Chaos and Limbo killing Darius and then if he chooses to flee off the roller coaster rather than wash off the smell, leading to the Tarbosaurus killing the protagonists.
    • In Season 3, he blames Darius for putting Brooklynn's life in danger, even though Darius never put her in danger and Kenji was willing to give Wu's laptop to him which could create more hybrids like the Indoraptor, showing he is willing to let others die in order to save his friends.
    • He was ultimately responsible for Yaz having PTSD as he got the campers stuck on the island after following the Indominus Rex noises.
    • His worst actions is in season 5, where he briefly becomes a villain after he sadistically controls Toro and betrays his friends thinking they didn't care about his feelings this is shown he is a complete delusional hypocrite as Kenji have shown repeatedly to never consider anyone else feelings but his own. Despite his actions it was his father Daniel Kon who was truly behind them for manipulating Kenji to think that what his father did was no evil thing which turned him against his friends. Kenji subsequently redeemed himself and showed genuine remorse for his actions after realizing his friends was right that his father was corrupt and could not be trusted.
